 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

1). Why did Joseph deal with his brothers the way he did? Some Jewish writers maintain that before Joseph would reveal himself to his brothers he needed to know if they still hated him. If he showed himself here he would never know if they still hated him.  


2). Joseph accused them of being spies after he “remembered the dreams”. According to Genesis 42:6, one of the dreams had just been fulfilled. It is possible that God had already given Joseph the wisdom through dreams about to deal with his brothers before they had ever come to Egypt.


3). Genesis 37:5-7And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

37:6And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

1). Although Joseph knew his brothers, they did not know him. His Egyptian cultural dress and appearance helped cloak his identity from them and Joseph spoke Egyptian to them, while an interpreter translated. Plus the fact they hadn’t seen him in 22 years.

2). Joseph’s ten older brothers had been living with a guilty conscience for over twenty years, they must have thought of Joseph and wondered what had become of him in Egypt.

1). Some Bible scholars believe that Joseph was on the lookout for his brothers to eventually come before him for the following reasons. Joseph knew that his dreams were prophetic and knew that eventually his brothers would come before him. He also knew that it was God’s will for them to be reunited, but the last time he saw them they hated him enough to kill him, but settled on selling him into slavery. So there had to be a change in feelings before there was a reunion.
