Introduction and study of Ezekiel 28:11-19


Introduction to Ezekiel 28:11-19

Ever since I first heard of the link between the fall of Lucifer and certain other Scriptures in the Bible I became intrigued. Ezekiel 28:11-19 is one of those Scriptures. This passage  is one of the most curious and mysterious in the whole Bible because it speaks of Lucifer before he fell. Although the name Lucifer is not mentioned in this passage it is mentioned in the comparative passage in Isaiah 14:11-15. It describes him as being not only in Eden the garden of God but also being the covering or protector of either the earth or throne of God and it also speaks of his association with music. There is disagreement within the Body of Christ as to the time all this happened. There are those within the body of Christ that believe the fall of Lucifer took place between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2 and there are those who believe the fall of Lucifer took place sometime during the week of Creation. There is no doubt Lucifer is being described from Ezekiel 28:11 up to the middle of Ezekiel 28:15 as he was before his fall. What is interesting about his corruption is he convinced one third of the angels to join him, and as we shall see his rebellion was not instantaneous. There was a process of spreading his corruption among the angels. When did all this happen and where was man when all this happened?  Personally, I lean toward a pre-Adam fall of Lucifer, but Scripture is not really clear in some of this. The bottom line for me is much of this discussion about the timing of the fall is just extremely interesting speculation and food for thought. What is not speculation is that Lucifer did fall and took 1 third of the angels with him. In my next few postings I want to examine this curious passage of Scripture verse by verse.  God Bless you in Jesus name.

1).  D.C: This word is used 18 times in the Old Testament and it is always translated “lamentation”, a song. It is ironic that a passage revealing how music was used in the fall of angels is itself a song.

1). Institute Of Creation Research Daily Devotional 7/14/14 This prophecy against the King of Tyre is very similar to the prophecy given over a century earlier against the King of Babylon (Isaiah 14:3-28). Both are ostensibly addressed to earthly kings, yet both are impossible to apply to any mere human monarch. In both instances, it becomes obvious that an evil spirit—in fact, none other than Satan himself—had possessed the bodies of these kings. Thus God, through Ezekiel, is here speaking primarily to Satan. Satan had been “full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty,” but he became proud instead of thankful. “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground” (Ezekiel 28:17). He had been “the anointed cherub” on “the holy mountain of God” (v. 14), the highest of all the mighty cherubim, covering the very throne of God. But “thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire” (v. 16). Satan, the covering cherub, had been “created” (v. 13), but he was not content to serve his Creator. When he sinned—probably refusing to believe that God was his Creator, desiring God’s throne for himself (Isaiah 14:13)—God cast him out, saying, “Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou was created, till iniquity was found in thee” (Ezekiel 28:15). Yet he still refuses to acknowledge God and has since persuaded multitudes of men and women to assume that they, too, can be “as gods” (Genesis 3:5). This belief can only—if they persist—result in their eternal ruin. HMM

1). Although it is addressed to the king of Tyrus, it is clear, God is speaking to the being behind the king, a cherub or cherubim. The adjectives describing this being could not be used to describe a man. Likewise, the comparative passage in Isaiah 14 that speaks about Lucifer the same being is addressed to the king of Babylon. In looking at the Hebrews definitions there are two translations that come the closest in my opinion.

a). Ezekiel 28:12 [NKJV] "Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord GOD:  "You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

b). Ezekiel 28:12 [NIV] "Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: " 'You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

Ezekiel 28:13

Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

a. NLT: You were in Eden, the garden of God. Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone—red carnelian, pale-green peridot, white moonstone, blue-green beryl, onyx, green jasper, blue lapis lazuli, turquoise, and emerald—all beautifully crafted for you and set in the finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created.

b. NIV: You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.

c. YLT: In Eden, the garden of God, thou hast been, Every precious stone thy covering, Ruby, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle, and gold, The workmanship of thy tabrets, and of thy pipes, In thee in the day of thy being produced, have been prepared.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, the carnelian, topaz, jasper, chrysolite, beryl, onyx, sapphire, carbuncle, and emerald; and your settings and your sockets and engravings were wrought in gold. e. 1). Though he began the address with the king of Tyrus, a man in (Ezekiel 28:11, 12), he clearly is addressing the spirit who is inspiring the rebellion of the earthly king, that spirit is Lucifer. In Ezekiel 28:14 Ezekiel also refers to him as a cherub, clearly not a man. As the Hebrew definitions bear out he was created to be in ministry, employment of music. Some scholars teach he was the angelic leader of praise and worship of God in heaven before his rebellion against God.

2. “…every precious stone was thy covering…

a. every [Strong: 3605 * or (Jer. 33:8) kowl {kole}; from 3634; properly, the whole; hence, all, any or every (in the singular only, but often in a plural sense):--(in) all (manner, (ye)), altogether, any (manner), enough, every (one, place, thing), howsoever, as many as, (no-)thing, ought, whatsoever, (the) whole, whoso(-ever).]

b. precious [Strong: 3368 * yaqar yaw-kawr' from 3365; valuable (obj. or subj.): -brightness, clear, costly, excellent, fat, honourable women, precious, reputation.]

c. stone [Strong: 68 * 'eben eh'-ben from the root of 1129 through the meaning to build; a stone:--+ carbuncle, + mason, + plummet, (chalk-, hail-, head-, sling-)stone(-ny), (divers) weight(-s).]

d. [was thy] covering [Strong: 4540 * mcukkah mes-ook-kaw' from 5526; a covering, i.e. garniture:--covering.]

3. “…the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold…”

a. [the] sardius [Strong: 124 * 'odem o'-dem from 119; redness, i.e. the ruby, garnet, or some other red gem:--sardius.]

b. topaz [Strong: 6357 * pitdah pit-daw' of foreign derivation; a gem, probably the topaz:--topaz.]

c. [and the] diamond [Strong: 3095 * yahalom yah-hal-ome' from 1986 (in the sense of hardness); a precious stone, probably onyx:--diamond.]

d. [the] beryl [Strong: 8658 * tarshiysh tar-sheesh' probably of foreign derivation (Compare 8659); a gem, perhaps the topaz:--beryl.]

g. [the] sapphire [Strong: 5601 * cappiyr sap-peer' from 5608; a gem (perhaps used for scratching other substances), probably the sapphire:--sapphire.]

h. [the] emerald [Strong: 5306 * nophek no'-fek from an unused root meaning to glisten; shining; a gem, probably the garnet:--emerald.]

i. [and the] carbuncle [Strong: 1304 * bareqeth baw-reh'-keth or barkath {baw-rek-ath'}; from 1300; a gem (as flashing), perhaps the emerald:--carbuncle.]

j. [and] gold [Strong: 2091 * zahab zaw-hawb' from an unused root meaning to shimmer; gold, figuratively, something gold-colored (i.e. yellow), as oil, a clear sky:-- gold(-en), fair weather.]

1). This is a very curious statement. As we shall see He is addressing Lucifer and reminding him and instructing us of what he was before he fell. Lucifer was in the garden of Eden before he fell. Where was man? I don’t know for sure, but I tend to believe this was before the creation of man. There are nine stones mentioned in this verse and some are the same as in the High Priest’s breastplate given in Exodus 28.

a). Exodus 28:17-20 And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row.
28:18 And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond.
28:19 And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst.
28:20 And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their inclosings.

2). The ones that are exactly the same are the sardius, topaz, diamond, carbuncle, emerald, beryl, sapphire, onyx, jasper. Why there are nine for the covering of Lucifer I don’t know. The reason for the twelve stones in the High Priest’s breastplate, are for the twelve tribes of Israel. Each stone were engraved with the name of one of the twelve tribes.

a). Exodus 28:21 And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes. 

4. “…the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.”

a. [the] workmanship [Strong: 4399 mla'kah mel-aw-kaw'; from the same as 4397; properly, deputyship, i.e. ministry; generally, employment (never servile) or work (abstractly or concretely); also property (as the result of labor):--business, + cattle, + industrious, occupation, (+ -pied), + officer, thing (made), use, (manner of) work((-man), -manship).] Gesenius: service, work prescribed, of the work of the artisan, work of a smith.]

1). The term “workmanship” refers to level of artistry used in the creation of Lucifer, these items, “tabrets” and “pipes” refer to the use, ministry and purpose after they were created placed in Lucifer when he was created. God used the utmost artistry in creating Lucifer and his purpose or ministry which involved music.

b. [of thy] tabrets [Strong: 8596 * toph] [Strong: from #8608 contracted; a tambourine:--tabret, timbrel.] [Gesenius: a drum or timbrel, beaten in the East by women when dancing, it is made with a wooden circle and covered with membrane and furnished with brass bells, also a bezel or hollow in which a gem is set.] 

c. [and of thy] pipes [Strong: 5345  neqeb neh'keb; a bezel (for a gem):--pipe] [Gesenius: a socket for setting a gem, others understand it to be a “pipe” from the root word meaning ‘to bore through’ but this is not suitable to the context.]

d. [was] prepared [in thee] [Strong: 3559 kuwn koon;  a primitive root; properly, to be erect (i.e. stand perpendicular); hence (causatively) to set up, in a great variety of applications, whether literal (establish, fix, prepare, apply), or figurative (appoint, render sure, proper or prosperous):--certain(-ty), confirm, direct, faithfulness, fashion, fasten, firm, be fitted, be fixed, frame, be meet, ordain, order, perfect, (make) preparation, prepare (self), provide, make provision, (be, make) ready, right, set (aright, fast, forth), be stable, (e-)stablish, stand, tarry, X very deed.]   

1). There are two schools of thought on Ezekiel 28:13. One school of thought leans toward “settings and mountings” in respect to precious stones of Lucifer’s covering. The following translations are cited.

a). Ezekiel 28:13 [NIV] You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire,* turquoise and beryl.* Your settings and mountings* were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.

b). Ezekiel 28:13 [NASB] "You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The ruby, the topaz and the diamond; The beryl, the onyx and the jasper; The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald; And the gold, the workmanship of your *settings and *sockets, Was in you. On the day that you were created They were prepared.

c). Ezekiel 28:13 [RSV] You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, carnelian, topaz, and jasper, chrysolite, beryl, and onyx, sapphire, carbuncle, and emerald; and wrought in gold were your settings and your engravings. On the day that you were created they were prepared.

2). The other school of thought leans toward “tabrets and pipes”, that these were musical instruments.

a). c). Ezekiel 28:13 [Darby] thou wast in Eden, the garden of God. Every precious stone was thy covering: the sardius, the topaz, and the diamond, the chrysolite, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the carbuncle, and the emerald, and gold. The workmanship of thy tambours and of thy pipes was in thee: in the day that thou wast created were they prepared.

3). I am persuaded that if both schools of thought are revealed in the Hebrew words, then perhaps both are meant. The craftsmanship and or ministry of the musical instruments and the settings of the stones. In line with that, some scholars believe Lucifer’s ministry before he fell, involved music, because as some of these Scriptures say, a ministry or employment of music was created in him. Personally, I not only believe that music was involved in his pre-fall ministry, I believe music was used by Lucifer in the spreading of his rebellion. I will take a closer look at that in the study of Ezekiel 28:18.

Ezekiel 28:14

Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

a. NLT: I ordained and anointed you as the mighty angelic guardian. You had access to the holy mountain of God and walked among the stones of fire.

b. NIV: You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.

c. YLT: Thou art an anointed cherub who is covering, And I have set thee in the holy mount, God thou hast been, In the midst of stones of fire thou hast walked up and down.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: You were the anointed cherub that covers with overshadowing [wings], and I set you so. You were upon the holy mountain of God; you walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire [like the paved work of gleaming sapphire stone upon which the God of Israel walked on Mount Sinai].

b. [the] anointed [Strong 4473 * mimshach mim-shakh' from 4886, in the sense of expansion; outspread (i.e. with outstretched wings):--anointed.] [AMG: The term more likely expresses the sense of anointment or anointing. Taking the word this way, the phrase conveys the more satisfying expression “cherub of anointing,” that is, the anointed cherub.]

c. cherub [3742 * keruwb] [Strong: cherub, cherubim (pl), an angelic being, as guardians of Eden, as flanking God's throne, as an image form hovering over the Ark of the Covenant, as the chariot of Jehovah (fig.)]

1). A description of cherubim is given in Ezekiel 1:5-11 and Ezekiel 10:15.

a). Ezekiel 1:5-11 Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man.
1:6 And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings.
1:7 And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.
1:8 And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings.
1:9 Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.
1:10 As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.
1:11 Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.

b). Ezekiel 10:15 And the cherubims were lifted up. This is the living creature that I saw by the river of Chebar.

2). Scripture declares that two cherubim were put on the top of the Ark of the Covenant , but nowhere have I seen an image of the Ark of the Covenant that shows the cherubim with the appearance of the first chapter of Ezekiel. Perhaps cherubim were a kind of rank of angel that were composed of different kinds of angels, rather not just a specific kind of angel. In other words, some cherubim looked like the ones at the river Chebar while other looked like a man with wings.

a). Exodus 25:10-20 describes the cherubim placed on the top of the Ark of the Covenant.

3). After the fall of man and God removed Adam and Eve from the garden, God placed cherubims at the entrance to keep man from eating of the tree of life.

a). Genesis 3:22-24 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 
Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

b). Scripture does not say how long the cherubim remained there. It is possible they were there until the flood of Noah 1600 years later.

d. covereth [Strong: 5526 *  cakak saw-kak' or sakak (Exod. 33:22) {saw-kak'}; a primitive root; properly, to entwine as a screen; by implication, to fence in, cover over, (figuratively) protect:--cover, defence, defend, hedge in, join together, set, shut up.] [Outline of Biblical Usage: to hedge, fence about, shut in, to block, overshadow, screen, stop the approach, shut off, cover, to screen, cover, to cover oneself, protector (participle), to screen, cover, to cover, defecate (euphemism), to cover, lay over, to weave together, to weave together, to weave, weave together.]

1). Some scholars believe this to mean Lucifer was the covering or protector of the earth and I can see that. It could mean also refer to the cherubims that covered the “mercy seat”, that is, the throne, Lucifer was the covering or protector of the Throne. It could have been both.

[of] God [Strong: 430 * 'elohiym el-o-heem' plural of 433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:--angels, X exceeding, God (gods)(-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty.

1). The “holy mountain of God” is speaking of where God dwells.

a). Psalm 48:1, 2 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.
48:2 Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

2). In the comparative passage in Isaiah 14 that speaks of Lucifer’s rebellion, Lucifer mentions the “mount” or mountain located in the sides of the north.

a). Isaiah 14:12-14 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

3). John may be referring to this mountain in Revelation.

a). Revelation 21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,

3. “…thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.”

d. of the stones [Strong: 68 * 'eben eh'-ben from the root of 1129 through the meaning to build; a stone:--+ carbuncle, + mason, + plummet, (chalk-, hail-, head-, sling-)stone(-ny), (divers) weight(-s).]

e. of fire [Strong: 784 * 'esh aysh a primitive word; fire (literally or figuratively):-- burning, fiery, fire, flaming, hot.]

1). Lucifer was and is an anointed cherub. He was anointed to fulfill his purpose, according to the previous verse, his ministry, his employment and the craftsmanship involved in his creation was fixed, secured and determined in the day he was created. Arguably, it involved music. In fact, all three traditional musical instrument classifications, wind, stringed and percussion are all mentioned in either his ministry or his fall. The wind and percussion classifications are listed in Ezekiel 28:13 and the stringed instruments are mentioned the companion passage in Isaiah 14.

a). Isaiah 14:11  Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.

b). Notice the “noise of thy viols” is brought down along with Lucifer’s pomp.

c). pomp [1347 * ga’own] [Strong: exaltation, majesty, pride, majesty, exaltation, excellence, of nations
of God, of the Jordan, pride, arrogance (bad sense)]

d). I am fully persuaded that this Scripture reveals that Lucifer’s anointed music was used in the fall to further the spread of his rebellion.

2). Family Bible Notes: The stones of fire are the stones mentioned in Ezekiel 28:13. It also may be referring to a passage in Exodus where Moses Aaron Nadab Abihu and 70 leaders of Israel experienced the presence of God.

a). Exodus 24:9, 10 Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel:
24:10 And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.

3). I don’t know exactly what this phrase means, but I can’t help from thinking it has something to do with walking in the presence of God. In Ezekiel 28:13, 14, Scripture describes Lucifer’s creation and ministry and then describes some of his privileges, one of which is seemingly within his exalted ministry, Lucifer had the privilege of walking in the presence of God.

Ezekiel 28:15

Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

a. ASV: Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till unrighteousness was found in thee.

b. YLT: Perfect art thou in thy ways, From the day of thy being produced, Till perversity hath been found in thee.

1). Within the Hebrew definitions we can see that part of Lucifer’s “ways” were the things that God created in him to compliment his ministry. His “ways” were perfect in him from the day he was created.

2. “…till iniquity was found in thee.”

a. till [Strong: 5704 `ad ad properly, the same as 5703 (used as a preposition, adverb or conjunction; especially with a preposition); as far (or long, or much) as, whether of space (even unto) or time (during, while, until) or degree (equally with):--against, and, as, at, before, by (that), even (to), for(-asmuch as), (hither-)to, + how long, into, as long (much) as, (so) that, till, toward, until, when, while, (+ as) yet.]

Ezekiel 28:16

By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

a. ASV: By the abundance of thy traffic they filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore have I cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God; and I have destroyed thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

b. YLT: By the abundance of thy merchandise They have filled thy midst with violence, And thou dost sin, And I thrust thee from the mount of God, And I destroy thee, O covering cherub, From the midst of the stones of fire.

c. Classic Amplified: Through the abundance of your commerce you were filled with lawlessness and violence, and you sinned; therefore I cast you out as a profane thing from the mountain of God and the guardian cherub drove you out from the midst of the stones of fire.

1). This same Hebrew word is translated “traffic” in Ezekiel 28:5 and Ezekiel 28:18  

a). [NKJV] “By the abundance of your trading…”

b). [NIV] “Through your widespread trade…”

2). D.C: I can’t help but believe what he was trafficking, was his rebellion, his desire to be like God. He was trafficking his rebellion and deception among the angels and one third of the angels followed him in his rebellion.

2. “…they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned …”

a. [they have] filled [Strong: 4390 mâlêʼ, maw-lay'; or מָלָא mâlâʼ; (Esther 7:5), a primitive root; to fill or (intransitively) be full of, in a wide application (literally and figuratively):—accomplish, confirm, consecrate, be at an end, be expired, be fenced, fill, fulfil, (be, become, × draw, give in, go) full(-ly, -ly set, tale), (over-) flow, fulness, furnish, gather (selves, together), presume, replenish, satisfy, set, space, take a (hand-) full, have wholly.]

1). Though added by the translators I believe the “they” refers to not only his ways that became iniquity, but also in combination with the abundance of trade, “they” both filled Lucifer with violence.

3. “…therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God…”

3). Although Lucifer was cast out of God’s presence, lost his position, and was thrown out of heaven, he still according to Scripture could enter heaven during certain times. It appears that there were times he would go to heaven and present himself before God, and give an account of his doings. Two of those times are shown in the book of Job.

a). Job 1:6, 7 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. 
1:7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. 

b). Job 2:1, 2 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. 
2:2 And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

4). The Scriptures describe Satan as the accuser of the brethren, and the Word goes on to say Satan accuses us before God during this present time. In the text below, though Satan and his angels will be permanently thrown out of heaven and limited to the earth and never again to have access to heaven. So it appears that he was first removed from all his ministry responsibilities and thrown out of heaven. During this time he would seemingly be required to present himself before the Lord and give an account of his actions. At which time he, as he does now, he  accuses God’s people before God. That will soon end though.

12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 
12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. 
12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.     
  
4. “…and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.”

a. b. [O] covering [Strong: 5526 çâkak, saw-kak'; or שָׂכַךְ sâkak; (Exodus 33:22), a primitive root; properly, to entwine as a screen; by implication, to fence in, cover over, (figuratively) protect:—cover, defence, defend, hedge in, join together, set, shut up.]

c. cherub [Strong: 3742 kᵉrûwb, ker-oob'; of uncertain derivation; a cherub or imaginary figure:—cherub, (plural) cherubims.]

1). Perhaps what is meant is the position or ministry of “covering cherub” one who walked in the presence of God “the midst of the stones of fire” is going to be destroyed. 

2). Lucifer is a cherub, a spirit being and as such will exist forever. I do not think the word “destroy” is meant in the strict sense of the word. Especially in light of what the rest of Scripture says about his end. The Bible clearly says the devil will be cast into the lake of fire and tormented forever and ever.

a). Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

d. [from the] midst [Strong: 8432 tâvek, taw'-vek; from an unused root meaning to sever; a bisection, i.e. (by implication) the centre:—among(-st), × between, half, × (there-, where-), in(-to), middle, mid(-night), midst (among), × out (of), × through, × with(-in).]

Ezekiel 28:17

Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

a. YLT: Thy heart was lifted up because of thy beauty; thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I have cast thee to the ground; I have laid thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

1. “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty…”

1). Ezekiel 28:12 describes Lucifer as “perfect in beauty” and it seems that his wisdom and his beauty were connected because the whole phrase reads, “Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.” 

a). [NKJV] "You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty”.

b). [NIV]  ”You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty”.

c). The “sum” was that he was “full of wisdom and perfect in beauty”.

2). 1 Timothy declares that pride was the downfall of Lucifer. Lucifer became proud of the fact he was full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

a). 1 Timothy 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

2. “…thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness…”

a. 1). Without exception every translation I looked at supported the view Lucifer was lifted up in pride because of his splendor, his brightness. The result was his wisdom his ability to administer his ministry was corrupted.

3. “…I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.”

Ezekiel 28:18

Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.

a. NLT: You defiled your sanctuaries with your many sins and your dishonest trade.
So I brought fire out from within you, and it consumed you. I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching.

b. NIV: By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries. So I made a fire come out from you, and it consumed you, and I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching.

c. YLT: From the abundance of thy iniquity, By the perversity of thy traffic, Thou hast polluted thy sanctuaries, And I bring forth fire from thy midst, It hath devoured thee, And I make thee become ashes on the earth, Before the eyes of all beholding thee.

b. [thy] sanctuaries [Strong: 4720 miqdash mik-dawsh' or miqqdash (Exod. 15:17) {mik-ked-awsh'}; sacred place, sanctuary, holy place, sanctuary, of the temple, of the tabernacle, of Ezekiel's temple, of Jehovah.]

1). Similar wording is used by Ezekiel in describing Jews coming into the Temple after they had just sacrificed children. These Jews defiled the temple by their presence because they were in rebellion by participating in unrepentant sin and then coming into the temple.

a). Ezekiel 23:37-39 That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them.
23:38 Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths.
23:39 For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of mine house.

2). Here in Ezekiel 28:18 Lucifer defiled his sanctuaries by the multitude of his iniquities. Looking at the comparative text in Ezekiel 23 it may be that while he was carrying out his sacred duties for the Lord God he was also participating in a multitude of iniquity and as the rest of the verse reveals, spreading his rebellion by his music. 

c. [by the] multitude [Strong: 7230 rob robe; from 7231; abundance (in any respect):--abundance(- antly), all, X common (sort), excellent, great(-ly, -ness, number), huge, be increased, long, many, more in number, most, much, multitude, plenty(-ifully), X very (age).]

d. [of thine] iniquities [Strong: 5771 `avon aw-vone' or oavown; from 5753; perversity, i.e. (moral) evil:--fault, iniquity, mischeif, punishment (of iniquity), sin.]

1). All of the translations are in agreement that “sanctuaries” is plural. This could refer to the places his ministry took him or where he carried out or administered his responsibilities. There is a passage in Hebrews that I believe possibly touches on this. Notice the wording carefully.

a). Hebrews 9:22, 23 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. 
9:23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

2). The patterns of the things in the heavens were purified with the blood of bulls and goats, but the heavenly things themselves were purified with the blood of Christ. The heavenly sanctuary from which the pattern, the blueprint of the earthly sanctuary was designed could only be purified by the blood of Christ. Lucifer defiled the sanctuary in heaven and perhaps others because the word is plural.    

2. “…by the iniquity of thy traffic…”

a. [by the] iniquity [Strong: 5766 `evel eh'-vel or lavel {aw'-vel}; and (feminine) lavlah {av-law'}; or owlah {o-law'}; or .olah {o-law'}; from 5765; (moral) evil:--iniquity, perverseness, unjust(-ly), unrighteousness(-ly); wicked(-ness).]

b. [of thy] traffic [Strong: 7404 rkullah rek-ool-law'; feminine passive participle of 7402; trade (as peddled):--merchandise, traffic.]

1). The Word says Lucifer defiled his sanctuaries by two things, “the multitude of thine iniquities”  and by “the iniquity of thy traffic”.

2). The RSV reads, “in the unrighteousness of your trade “; while the NIV reads, “dishonest trade”; The NKJV reads, “the iniquity of your trading”; In the word “traffic” I can’t help but call to mind the use of the word in present day America when someone is arrested for selling drugs, it is referred to as “drug trafficking”. 

3). Isaiah 14:9-15 is a companion passage to Ezekiel 28:11-19 in that it speaks about the fall of Lucifer. Notice closely in Isaiah 14:11 what it says about music, “the noise of thy viols.”

a). Isaiah 14:9-15 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. 
14:10 All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us? 
14:11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.
14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

b). Isaiah 14:11 not only ties music to Lucifer, it ties music to the fall of Lucifer. The Hebrew definitions reveal this.

(1) noise [Strong: 1998 hemyah hem-yaw'; from 1993; sound:--noise.] [Gesenius: sound of musical instruments.]

(2) viols [Strong: 5035 ebel neh'-bel or nebel {nay'-bel}; from 5034; a skin-bag for liquids (from collapsing when empty); hence, a vase (as similar in shape when full); also a lyre (as having a body of like form):--bottle, pitcher, psaltery, vessel, viol.]

2). Combine the Isaiah passage with Ezekiel 28:13. In the school of thought that holds to “pipes” being a musical instrument, we see all three musical instrument families represented, percussion-tabrets, stringed-viols, and wind-pipes. If not, at least there is no doubt about tabrets and viols as being musical. My conclusion is music was incorporated into his creation and ministry and music was involved in his fall, and music was used to spread his rebellion among the angels that sided with him.

 3. “…therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee…”

a. therefore I will bring forth [Strong:3318 yatsa' yaw-tsaw'; a primitive root; to go (causatively, bring) out, in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively, direct and proxim.:--X after, appear, X assuredly, bear out, X begotten, break out, bring forth (out, up), carry out, come (abroad, out, thereat, without), + be condemned, depart(-ing, -ure), draw forth, in the end, escape, exact, fail, fall (out), fetch forth (out), get away (forth, hence, out), (able to, cause to, let) go abroad (forth, on, out), going out, grow, have forth (out), issue out, lay (lie) out, lead out, pluck out, proceed, pull out, put away, be risen, X scarce, send with commandment, shoot forth, spread, spring out, stand out, X still, X surely, take forth (out), at any time, X to (and fro), utter.]
1). The meaning of this phrase could be about the creation of hell. There is a verse in Deuteronomy that seemingly speaks about hell.
a). Deuteronomy 32:22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
2). Scripture is clear about why hell was created, it certainly was not created for man, it was created for the devil and his followers.

a). Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 

3). In light of that, the meaning of this phrase in Ezekiel 28:18 could be referring to the creation of not only hell but also “the lake of fire” which will be the final destination of the devil.

4. “…and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.”

a. b. to ashes [Strong: 665 'epher ay'-fer; from an unused root meaning to bestrew; ashes:--ashes.]

1). Ashes in Scripture signify humility as in the case of Job after his severe trial and the city of Nineveh after they repented.
a). Job 2:8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.
b). Jonah 3:5, 6 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
3:6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

2). But it also refers to judgment upon the enemies of God.

a). Malachi 4:3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

Ezekiel 28:19
All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

a. The ultimate end of Lucifer will be the lake of fire
