Genesis 44:5

 Genesis 44:5

Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

1). Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible: Is not this it, in which my lord drinketh,.... Which was for his own particular use, and so the more ungrateful in them to take it:

and whereby indeed he divineth? according to our version and others, Joseph is here represented by his steward as a diviner or soothsayer, and so he might be thought to be by the Egyptians, from being such an exact interpreter of dreams, foretelling things to come, and that he made his divinations by the silver cup;


2). I believe Gill nailed it in his explanation. This is not God saying that Joseph was using a cup to divine. This is Joseph’s steward saying it. Joseph’s prophetic dreams were the gifts of the Spirit in operation, particularly the Gift of the Word of Wisdom. Kenneth Hagin in his book Concerning Spiritual Gifts. 


a). Kenneth Hagin, Concerning Spiritual Gifts: There were supernatural manifestations of the gifts of the Spirit in the Old Testament as well as in the New Testament. In fact, they had all the gifts in operation in Old testament times  except tongues and interpretation of tongues. The gifts were first mentioned in the New Testament under the ministry of Jesus. Then after the day of Pentecost tongues and interpretation of tongues were manifested as well as the others.


b). Kenneth Hagin, Concerning Spiritual Gifts: In the Old Testament Joseph received a word of wisdom through a dream which revealed to him God’s plan and purpose for his future (Genesis 37:5-11).
