Luke 6:45

Luke 6:45
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

1. “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good…”

a. good [18 * agathos] [Strong: a primary word; "good" (in any sense, often as noun):--benefit, good(-s, things), well.]

b. man [444 * Anthropos] [Strong: man-faced, i.e. a human being:--certain, man.]

c. out of [1537 * ek] [Strong: a primary preposition denoting origin (the point whence action or motion proceeds), from, out (of place, time, or cause; literal or figurative; direct or remote):--after, among, X are, at, betwixt(-yond), by (the means of), exceedingly, (+ abundantly above), for(- th), from (among, forth, up), + grudgingly, + heartily, X heavenly, X hereby, + very highly, in, ...ly, (because, by reason) of, off (from), on, out among (from, of), over, since, X thenceforth, through, X unto, X vehemently, with(-out). d. good [18 * agathos] [Strong: a primary word; "good" (in any sense, often as noun):--benefit, good(-s, things), well.]

e. treasure [2344 * thesaurus] [Strong: a deposit, i.e. wealth (literally or figuratively):--treasure.] [Zodhiates: treasure, riches, anything laid up in store, wealth. Metaphorically, of spiritual treasures pertaining to the mind or eternal life. Treasury, place where treasures or stores are kept, storehouse. Metaphorically, the strore house of the mind where the thoughts, feeling or counsels are laid up.]

1). This treasure consists of things we have deposited in our hearts because Jesus said that is where these good things come out from. Some teach that the heart is the spirit of man, Romans 2:29, 1 Corinthians 14:14. While other teach that the spirit and the soul/mind together comprise the “heart”. Many times in Proverbs it gives the definite impression that the soul/mind and spirit comprise the “heart”. The important thing to remember is we deposit things there and we bring them out. Here Jesus said these were good things brought out of a good heart. The following are examples of good things out of a good heart.

a). Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

b). Psalm 1:1-3 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
1:2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

f. of his [846 * autos] [Strong:  from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

g. heart [2588 * kardia] [Strong: prolonged from a primary kar (Latin cor, "heart"); the heart, i.e. (figuratively) the thoughts or feelings (mind); also (by analogy) the middle:--(+ broken-)heart(-ed).]

h. bringeth forth [4393 * prophero] [Strong: from 4253 and 5342; to bear forward, i.e. produce:--bring forth.]

i. good [18 * agathos] [Strong: a primary word; "good" (in any sense, often as noun):--benefit, good(-s, things), well.]

2. “…and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil…”

a. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. an evil [4190 * poneros] [Strong: hurtful, i.e. evil (properly, in effect or influence, and thus differing from 2556, which refers rather to essential character, as well as from 4550, which indicates degeneracy from original virtue); figuratively, calamitous; also (passively) ill, i.e. diseased; but especially (morally) culpable, i.e. derelict, vicious, facinorous; neuter (singular) mischief, malice, or (plural) guilt; masculine (singular) the devil, or (plural) sinners:--bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious, wicked(-ness).]

e. his [846 * autos] [Strong:  from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

g. speaketh [2980 * laleo] [Strong: a prolonged form of an otherwise obsolete verb; to talk, i.e. utter words:--preach, say, speak (after), talk, tell, utter.]

1). What we allow to come out of our mouth is a good indicator of what is inside our heart.
a). WOC 9/12/11 You can locate your faith by your own words. Your words are your faith speaking. Now, it’s good practice to consciously speak good words over your circumstances. But if you want to find out where you really are in your faith walk—or why some things aren’t going right in your life—then listen to yourself talk when the pressure is on. See what comes out of your mouth when you’re not making a conscious effort to speak something good. In other words, see what comes out of the abundance of your heart. Then you’ll know if you need to make some adjustments. It’s like a bank account. The bank sends you a statement each month. If you want them to add more to the final balance, what do you do? Put more money in the bank, and the next statement will show the difference. It’s the same way spiritually. When you want something to show up outside, deposit the treasures of God’s Word inside. Feed on the Word continually. Treat your inner man like a bank vault and just keep depositing God’s Word in there. Once the Word is deposited in your inner man, you’ll believe it; once you believe it, you’ll say it. And then your entire being will reflect the treasure of God’s Word.

4:15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

11:21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
11:22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

a). Luke 23:49  And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

a. NLT: along with some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases. Among them were Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons;

c. women [1135 * gune] [Strong:  probably from the base of 1096; a woman; specially, a wife:--wife, woman.]

1). Women is plural, meaning there was more than one. Mary Magdalene is mentioned in this verse, while Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, are mentioned in the next verse. In this section of the verse it says these women had been healed of both evil spirits and infirmities, i.e., sicknesses and diseases. It is possible that Mary Magdalene was not the only one of these women who was delivered from evil spirits.

d. which [3739 * hos] [Strong: including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

c. Magdalene [3094 * Magdalene] [Strong: feminine of a derivative of 3093; a female Magdalene, i.e. inhabitant of Magdala:--Magdalene.]

1). I may be wrong but I think every verse that mentions this particular Mary in Scripture has “Magdalene” after Mary. “Magdalene” is not her surname, yes, it is used to identify her, but also to give the city of her origin, the city of Magdala. The city of Magdala has been hidden for almost 2000 years. It was discovered in 2009. The following is a report from Charisma website.

a). Archaeological Dig Reveals Where Jesus Began His Ministry, Chris Mitchell, CBN News. 2/11/2014.  www.charismanews.com/world/42742-archaeological-dig-reveals-where-jesus-began-his-ministry.  Discoveries from a new archaeological dig are creating excitement in the area where Jesus began His ministry. The village is called Magdala (Migdal in Hebrew), and it's the home of Mary Magdalene. Senior Israeli archaeologist Arfan Najar, who oversees the excavation at Magdala, told CBN News, "She lived here and she met Jesus here and she continued with Him. Yes, it's that place." Najar said the city lay hidden all this time by just a small layer of dirt. "Some place almost you touch the surface and you have the wall, waiting for us for 2,000 years to when we are coming," he said. The most important discovery in Magdala has been a synagogue dating back to the time of Jesus. According to archaeologists, it's the first one discovered in the Galilee. "An expression that appears many times in several places of the Gospel, 'Jesus went around Galilee preaching in their synagogues," Father Solana, general director at the Magdala Center, explained. "So this is the closest synagogue to Capernaum where He lived. So it was likely He was here many times." In the synagogue, the team discovered a 2,000-year-old treasure. They call it the Magdala Stone, and some archaeologists say it's the most important discovery in decades. CBN News first reported on the stone just after it was uncovered in 2009. Father Kelly, of the Catholic order Legionnaires of Christ, showed CBN News a replica while overlooking the Temple Mount. "This particular Magdala Stone is the most important discovery ever made in relation to the Second Temple, the temple at the time of Jesus, which Herod redid.  So that's quite the statement," Father Kelly said. The Menorah (six-lamp candelabrum) on the stone is one of a kind, the first one discovered before the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. The Legionnaires of Christ own the land and are building an entire center at Magdala with an archaeological park, hotel and spiritual center. Father Solana dreamed up the project and wants it to be a center for all. "I'm pretty sure it's a gift for the world, for culture, for religions, for Israel of course," he said. Visitors to the center see the Bible come to life. "The altar is in the shape of a boat, a fisherman's boat," said Monica, a Christian pilgrim from Australia. "You're reminded of Jesus standing in the boat and preaching to the people on the shore." Jane, another Christian from Australia, said, "The whole gospel story has come alive for me here. It will never mean the same ever again." Father Solana sees the motto of the center, "Duc in Altum," Latin for "go into the deep," as a message for today. "Somehow Jesus tells to all of us, 'Go into the deep, try again, you can. Go, go, go!'" he said. "So I think this a beautiful message that the world needs in this moment. Financial crisis, problems with jobs, many situations and we need to try again. God is on our side."

8:31 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.

2). David recognized the authority of Scripture.

a). 1 Kings 2:1-3  Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,
2:2 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;
2:3 And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

3). The Apostle Paul reaffirmed the authority of the written word of God in the New Testament.

a). Romans 3:1-4 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?
3:2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.
3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?
3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

b). 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

4). In Luke 4:4 Jesus is setting himself in agreement with the traditional Jewish belief that the Scripture contain the authority of God.

5). The verse Jesus was referring to is found in Deuteronomy.

a). Deuteronomy 8:3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.

d. Word: Scripture uses two primary Greek words translated “word” or “words” in the English New Testament. One is logos and the other is rhema. These words need to be clearly defined before we go further. Below the differences are laid out.

1). Word [3056 * logos] [Zodhiates: Intelligence, word as the expression of that intelligence, discourse, saying, thing.] [Vine: “The expression of thought…as embodying a concept or idea…a saying or statement…sometimes it is used as the sum of God’s utterances, a discourse, speech, of instruction, a word…Also a title of the Son of God.”]

2). Word [4487 * rhema] [Zodhiates: That which is spoken, a statement, word.]
[W.E. Vine: “The significance of rhema (as distinct from logos) is exemplified in the injunction to take “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,” Ephesians 6:17; here the reference is not to the whole Bible as such, but to the individual scripture which the Spirit brings to our remembrance for use in time of need, a prerequisite being the regular storing of the mind with Scripture.”] [Strong: from 4483; an utterance (individually, collectively or specially),; by implication, a matter or topic (especially of narration, command or dispute); with a negative naught whatever:--+ evil, + nothing, saying, word.]

3). Dr. Charles Farah, Jr. Professor of Theology at ORU [This reference is from the 1980’s]: The Logos tends to be universal, while the Rhema is often used as a particular…the Logos is eternal, while the Rhema is often contemporary…It is a word a man takes action on; a personal word he hears…”The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart…” Romans 10:8. Here the word Rhema is used, and I believe, though not all scholars would agree, that Paul is saying this: Because the word is in your heart, it is necessary to use the word Rhema rather than the Logos, because God’s word has become a personal word to you.

4). Advanced Training Institute:  There are two primary Greek words that describe Scripture which are translated word in the New Testament. The first, logos, refers principally to the total inspired Word of God and to Jesus, Who is the living Logos… The second primary Greek word that describes Scripture is rhema, which refers to a word that is spoken and means “an utterance.” A rhema is a verse or portion of Scripture that the Holy Spirit brings to our attention with application to a current situation or need for direction.

5). Don Costello: Hearing logos requires physical ears, hearing rhema requires spiritual ears. Hearing logos produces knowledge, while rhema produces revelation, faith and grace. The literal meaning of Romans 10:17: faith comes from hearing faith, we hear faith when we hear the rhema of God. A logos word can become a rhema word through prayer and meditation and confession. See notes on Joshua 1:8 and Proverbs 4:20-22. If a believer desires any benefit from the logos word, that is, principally to the total inspired Word of God, it must become rhema.

e. of God [2316 * theos] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).

1). Man is a three part being, he is a spirit, he has a soul and he lives in a body. We live in a physical world but we are primarily spirit beings. Our physical bodies are nourished by physical food, but our spiritual lives are not, they are nourished by something entirely different. The feeding of our inner man by the word of God takes priority over the feeding of our physical man. Though we die if we do not eat physically, the importance is on the feeding of the spirit man in a right relationship with God by obedience to the Scriptures.

a). Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

2). The feeding of the inner man the word of God is a theme revealed all through Scripture.

a). Isaiah 55:1, 2 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
55:3 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

3). It is clear from this passage in Isaiah 55 that the “eating” is obedience, it is to “hearken” to the word. Another example comes from 1 Peter 2 where faithful obedience translates to one who has “tasted” the word of God.

a). 1 Peter 2:1-3 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
2:3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
