And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.

1). God’s character will not allow Him to lie or deceive.
a). Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

2). Satan’s character is deceitful.
a). John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
b). 2 Corinthians 4:3, 4 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

3). Adam Clarke Commentary: I the Lord have deceived that prophet - That is, he ran before he was sent; he willingly became the servant of Satan's illusions; and I suffered this to take place, because he and his followers refused to consult and serve me. I have often had occasion to remark that it is common in the Hebrew language to state a thing as done by the Lord which he only suffers or permits to be done; for so absolute and universal is the government of God, that the smallest occurrence cannot take place without his will or permission.
4). Troy Edwards, He Only Permits: In Ezekiel 14:9, God is only said to do that which he permitted Satan to do. There is no need for numerous Bible commentaries, dictionaries, and other scholarly material to understand this. We are to simply take statements like Ezekiel 14:9, see that it is in contradiction to God’s known character, that it contradicts other passages that tell us that He would never do such, and other passages that tell us that Satan is the one who does such things, and from that we are able to understand that Ezekiel is only speaking in the permissive sense.
