d.  [his] people [Strong: 5971 `am am from 6004; a people (as a congregated unit); specifically, a tribe (as those of Israel); hence (collectively) troops or attendants; figuratively, a flock:--folk, men, nation, people.]

1). Whether this was the same Abimelech as the one mentioned in Genesis 20 cannot be decided with certainty. The name proves nothing, for it was the standing official name of the kings of Gerar (cf. 1 Samuel 21:11 and Psalm 34), as Pharaoh was of the kings of Egypt. The identity is favoured by the pious conduct of Abimelech in both instances; and no difficulty is caused either by the circumstance that 80 years had elapsed between the two events (for Abraham had only been dead five years, and the age of 150 was no rarity then), or by the fact, that whereas the first Abimelech had Sarah taken into his harem, the second not only had no intention of doing this, but was anxious to protect her from his people, inasmuch as it would be all the easier to conceive of this in the case of the same king, on the ground of his advanced age.

2). We do not know for sure but it is possible there was knowledge of the first incident in this decision to protect Isaac and Rebecca.

1). The Philistines were not Canaanites. Their difference is clearly mentioned in Genesis 10. But their common progenitor was Ham. They were neighbors who intermarried.

a). Genesis 10:6-20 And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.

10:7 And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.

10:8 And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.

10:9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.

10:10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

10:11 Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah,

10:12 And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city.

10:13 And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,

10:14 And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim.

10:15 And Canaan begat Sidon his first born, and Heth,

10:16 And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite,

10:17 And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,

10:18 And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad.

10:19 And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha.

10:20 These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

1). This was the same weakness that Abraham had because of Sarah’s beauty. First recorded in Genesis 11:10-20. The second time Abraham used it was with Abimelech. What caused such a severe reaction from God and why he intervened with such force is because God had already begun the miraculous restoration of the reproductive processes in Sarah. Not only was she barren (Genesis 11:30), but over the years she had entered menopause (Genesis 18:11). And not only Sarah but Abraham also had become impotent (Romans 4:17-21) and had to be miraculously restored himself. If at this point, Abimelech would have slept with Sarah and she became pregnant, which now was possible, it would have thrown the Abrahamic Covenant into chaos. Isaac would have been half Philistine/Canaanite and Hebrew and then add in the complications with Christ Jesus.
