8:2 All the men of Israel assembled themselves before King Solomon at the feast in the seventh month, Ethanim.

8:3 All the elders of Israel came, and the priests took up the ark.

8:4 And they brought up the ark of the Lord, the Tent of Meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the tent; the priests and the Levites brought them up.

8:5 King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel who had assembled before him were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and oxen, so many that they could not be reported or counted.

8:6 And the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place in the Holy of Holies of the house, under the wings of the cherubim.

8:7 For the cherubim spread forth their two wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubim covered the ark and its poles.

8:8 The poles were so long that the ends of them were seen from the Holy Place before the Holy of Holies, but they were not seen outside; they are there to this day.

8:9 There was nothing in the ark except the two tables of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt.

8:10 When the priests had come out of the Holy Place, the cloud filled the Lord’s house,

8:11 So the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord’s house.

8:12 Then Solomon said, The Lord said that He would dwell in the thick darkness.

8:13 I have surely built You a house of habitation, a settled place for You to dwell in forever.

i. put [Strong: 3240 yanach yaw-nakh' a primitive root; to deposit; by implication, to allow to stay:--bestow, cast down, lay (down, up), leave (off), let alone (remain), pacify, place, put, set (down), suffer, withdraw, withhold. (The Hiphil forms with the dagesh are here referred to, in accordance with the older grammarians; but if any distinction of the kind is to be made, these should rather be referred to 5117, and the others here.)]

j. there [Strong: 8033 sham shawm a primitive particle (rather from the relative pronoun, 834); there (transferring to time) then; often thither, or thence:--in it, + thence, there (-in, + of, + out), + thither, + whither.]

k. [at] Horeb [Strong: 2722 Choreb kho-rabe' from 2717; desolate; Choreb, a (generic) name for the Sinaitic mountains:--Horeb.]

1). The Rubin Edition, The Early Prophets, 1 & 2 Kings, Rabbinic Commentary: The plain meaning of the verse is that nothing but the second set of Tablets was in the Ark. Accordingly, the shattered remains of the first Tablets (see Exodus 32:19) must have been stored in a second Ark, which, along with Tabernacle of the Wilderness, was stored in the Temple vaults. The same applies to the Torah Scroll that Moses wrote and deposited “next to the Ark” (Deuteronomy 31:26)--it was placed either inside or next to the second Ark. (Radak).  The words “Nothing was in the Ark but…” come rather to exclude the staff o Aaron (Numbers 1725) and the container of manna (Exodus 16:33, 34), which were both next to the Ark, but not in it (Abarbanel).  [The ArtScroll Series/Rubin Edition THE PROPHETS: KINGS Copyright 2006 by MESORAH PUBLICATIONS, Ltd.]

2). Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary: There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone—Nothing else was ever in the ark, the articles mentioned (Heb 9:4) being not in, but by it, being laid in the most holy place before the testimony (Ex 16:33; Nu 17:10).

3). Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible: There was nothing in the ark, save the two tables of stone which Moses put there at Horeb,.... That is, there were no other writings; or, as Ben Gersom says, no other part of the law, but the decalogue otherwise he observes there were in it Aaron's rod and the pot of manna, according to Hebrews 9:4 though the particle there may be rendered "at", or "with", or "by"; see Gill on Hebrews 9:4 and so they might be not within it, but in some place on the sides of it, see Deuteronomy 31:26, when the Lord made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt; about two months after.

1. “And they brought up the ark of the LORD, and the tabernacle of the congregation…”

a. [And they] brought up [Strong: 5927 `alah aw-law' a primitive root; to ascend, intransitively (be high) or actively (mount); used in a great variety of senses, primary and secondary, literal and figurative (as follow):--arise (up), (cause to) ascend up, at once, break (the day) (up), bring (up), (cause to) burn, carry up, cast up, + shew, climb (up), (cause to, make to) come (up), cut off, dawn, depart, exalt, excel, fall, fetch up, get up, (make to) go (away, up); grow (over) increase, lay, leap, levy, lift (self) up, light, (make) up, X mention, mount up, offer, make to pay, + perfect, prefer, put (on), raise, recover, restore, (make to) rise (up), scale, set (up), shoot forth (up), (begin to) spring (up), stir up, take away (up), work.]

c. [the] ark [Strong: 727 'arown aw-rone' or laron {aw-rone'}; from 717 (in the sense of gathering); a box:--ark, chest, coffin.]

d. [of the] LORD [Strong: 3068 Yhovah yeh-ho-vaw' from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]

f. [the] tabernacle [Strong: 168 'ohel o'-hel from 166; a tent (as clearly conspicuous from a distance):--covering, (dwelling)(place), home, tabernacle, tent.]

g. [of the] congregation [Strong: 4150 mow`ed mo-ade' or moled {mo-ade'}; or (feminine) moweadah (2Chronicles 8:13) {mo-aw-daw'}; from 3259; properly, an appointment, i.e. a fixed time or season; specifically, a festival; conventionally a year; by implication, an assembly (as convened for a definite purpose); technically the congregation; by extension, the place of meeting; also a signal (as appointed beforehand):--appointed (sign, time), (place of, solemn) assembly, congregation, (set, solemn) feast, (appointed, due) season, solemn(-ity), synogogue, (set) time (appointed).]

1). During the 40 year wilderness journey, the particular tasks regarding the setting up and taking down and the transport of the tabernacle were given to the priests and Levites.

The priests had the ministry of assembling and taking down the Tabernacle. Then the three families of the Levites would come and would fulfill their ministries.

a). The family of the Kohathites had the ministry of carrying the furniture and the utensils of the Holy of Holies.

(1) Numbers 4:4-20 This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation, about the most holy things:

4:5 And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it:

4:6 And shall put thereon the covering of badgers' skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.

4:7 And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon:

4:8 And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.

4:9 And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it:

4:10 And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put it upon a bar.

4:11 And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put to the staves thereof:

4:12 And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put them on a bar:

4:13 And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon:

4:14 And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers' skins, and put to the staves of it.

4:15 And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.

4:16 And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof.

4:17 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying,

4:18 Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites:

4:19 But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:

4:20 But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered, lest they die.

b). The Kohathites were not permitted to see the most holy things or touch them. This means that only the priests who covered the items and those who built the four furnishings of the Tabernacle knew what they looked like. If the Kohathites who carried the items didn’t know what they looked like then certainly the ordinary Israelite didn’t know either.

(1) Numbers 4:15-20

c). The family of the Gershonites had the ministry of carrying all the coverings and the hangings and their cords.

(2) Numbers 4:21-28 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

4:22 Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families;

4:23 From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.

4:24 This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve, and for burdens:

4:25 And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of the badgers' skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation,

4:26 And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.

4:27 At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens.

4:28 This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

d). The family of the Merarites had the ministry of carrying the boards, the bars, the pillars, the sockets, the pins and their cords.

(3) Numbers 4:29-33 As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them after their families, by the house of their fathers;

4:30 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation.

4:31 And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof,

4:32 And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden.

4:33 This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

e).  Originally the LORD ordained that the Gershonites and Merarites would physically carry the materials of the Tabernacle assigned to them by the LORD, but due to the apparent generosity of the princes of Israel an offering was given that provided 6 wagons that would be used to carry the materials of the Tabernacle. All the most holy items the Kohathites would carry, everything else would be put on wagons.

(1) Numbers 7:1-9 And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them;

7:2 That the princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were the princes of the tribes, and were over them that were numbered, offered:

7:3 And they brought their offering before the LORD, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they brought them before the tabernacle.

7:4 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

7:5 Take it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his service.

7:6 And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites.

7:7 Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons of Gershon, according to their service:

7:8 And four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

7:9 But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their shoulders.
