James 1:25


But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”

1. “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty…”

2. “…and continueth therein…”


a. and [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]


b. continueth [Strong: 3887. parameno par-am-en'-o from 3844 and 3306; to stay near, i.e. remain (literally, tarry; or figuratively, be permanent, persevere):--abide, continue.] [Zodhiates:  parameno; para-with; meno-to remain;  To stay, remain nearby with someone, abide.]


1). What verse 24 does not say but only implies, verse 25 says right out. This man, as the other, was looking into the word. But this man was looking a little more closely, more diligently, obediently.


a). John 8:31 Then Jesus said to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.


b). 1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.


3.  “ …he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work…”

b. being [Strong: 1096. ginomai ghin'-om-ahee a prolongation and middle voice form of a primary verb; to cause to be ("gen"-erate), i.e. (reflexively) to become (come into being), used with great latitude (literal, figurative, intensive, etc.):--arise, be assembled, be(-come, -fall, -have self), be brought (to pass), (be) come (to pass), continue, be divided, draw, be ended, fall, be finished, follow, be found, be fulfilled, + God forbid, grow, happen, have, be kept, be made, be married, be ordained to be, partake, pass, be performed, be published, require, seem, be showed, X soon as it was, sound, be taken, be turned, use, wax, will, would, be wrought.]

e. hearer [Strong: 202. akroates ak-ro-at-ace' from akroaomai (to listen; apparently an intensive of 191); a hearer (merely):--hearer.]


f. but [Strong: 235. alla al-lah' neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]


g. [a] doer [Strong: 4163. poietes poy-ay-tace' from 4160; a performer; specially, a "poet"; --doer, poet.]


h. [of the] work [Strong: 2041. ergon er'-gon from a primary (but obsolete) ergo (to work); toil (as an effort or occupation); by implication, an act:--deed, doing, labour, work.]


As I said before, what verse 24 implies, verse 25 says right out. We also have the definition of “continueth” that God wants us to understand, he is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work.


4. “…this man shall be blessed in his deed.”


a. this [man] [Strong: 3778. houtos hoo'-tos, including nominative masculine plural houtoi hoo'-toy, nominative feminine singular haute how'-tay, and nominative feminine plural hautai how'-tahee from the article 3588 and 846; the he (she or it), i.e. this or that (often with article repeated):--he (it was that), hereof, it, she, such as, the same, these, they, this (man, same, woman), which, who.]


b. shall be [Strong: 2071. esomai es'-om-ahee future of 1510; will be:--shall (should) be (have), (shall) come (to pass), X may have, X fall, what would follow, X live long, X sojourn.]


c. blessed [Strong: 3107. makarios mak-ar'-ee-os a prolonged form of the poetical makar (meaning the same); supremely blest; by extension, fortunate, well off:-- blessed, happy(X -ier).]
