Luke 8:21

 Luke 8:21


And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

1. “And he answered and said unto them…”


a. [Strong: 3588. [Ho] ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: [Ho] ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. 1). Blood is thicker than water but spirit is thicker than blood. Jesus here was literally putting off his family in favor of ministering to people who were hungry for God. Jesus probably knew what his family was up to, to basically kidnap him in order to protect him from himself. His family at this time did not believe in him.


a). Mark 6:4 [New Living Translation] Then Jesus told them, "A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family."


2). There were times during his ministering that his brothers out of unbelief would prompt him to do something.


a). John 7:3-5 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.

7:4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

7:5 For neither did his brethren believe in him.


3). This Messianic passage from Psalms reveals the disapproval his family particularly his brothers felt toward him, which was extremely emotionally painful for him


a). Psalm 69:7-10 Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.

69:8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.

69:9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

69:10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.


4). This kind of suffering, that Jesus endured first, is part of bearing our cross that Jesus expects us to bear. He must come first in our lives, even over the lives of our family.


a). Matthew 10:34-40 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 

10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

10:36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy or me. 

10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

10:40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

e.  brethren [Strong: 80. adephos ad-el-fos' from 1 (as a connective particle) and delphus (the womb); a brother (literally or figuratively) near or remote (much like 1):--brother.]


f. are [Strong: 1526. eisi i-see' 3d person plural present indicative of 1510; they are:--agree, are, be, dure, X is, were.]


g. these [Strong: 3778. houtos hoo'-tos, including nominative masculine plural houtoi hoo'-toy, nominative feminine singular haute how'-tay, and nominative feminine plural hautai how'-tahee from the article 3588 and 846; the he (she or it), i.e. this or that (often with article repeated):--he (it was that), hereof, it, she, such as, the same, these, they, this (man, same, woman), which, who.]
