Matthew 6:24

Matthew 6:24

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

a. NLT: “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

b. NIV: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

c. YLT: 'None is able to serve two lords, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to the one, and despise the other; ye are not able to serve God and Mammon.

d. Amplified Bible: No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in).

e. Worrell Translation: “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.

1. “No man can serve two masters…”

a. no man [3762 * oudeis] [Strong: including feminine oudemia oo-dem-ee'-ah, and neuter ouden oo-den' from 3761 and 1520; not even one (man, woman or thing), i.e. none, nobody, nothing:--any (man), aught, man, neither any (thing), never (man), no (man), none (+ of these things), not (any, at all, -thing), nought.]

b. can [1410 * dunamai] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; to be able or possible:--be able, can (do, + -not), could, may, might, be possible, be of power.]

c. serve [1398 * douleuo] [Strong: from 1401; to be a slave to (literal or figurative, involuntary or voluntary):--be in bondage, (do) serve(-ice).]

d. two [1417 * duo] [Strong: a primary numeral; "two":--both, twain, two.]

e. masters [2962 * kurios] [Strong: from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord, master, Sir.]

2. “…for either he will hate the one, and love the other…”

a. for [1063 * gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. either [2228 * e] [Strong: a primary particle of distinction between two connected terms; disjunctive, or; comparative, than:--and, but (either), (n-)either, except it be, (n-)or (else), rather, save, than, that, what, yea. Often used in connection with other particles.]

c. he will hate [3404 * miseo] [Strong: from a primary misos (hatred); to detest (especially to persecute); by extension, to love less:--hate(-ful).]

d. the one [1520 * heis] [Strong: (including the neuter (etc.) hen); a primary numeral; one:--a(-n, -ny, certain), + abundantly, man, one (another), only, other, some.]

e. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

f. love [25 * agapao] [Strong: perhaps from agan (much) (or compare 5689); to love (in a social or moral sense):--(be-)love(-ed).]

g. the other [2087 * heteros] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; (an-, the) other or different:--altered, else, next (day), one, (an-)other, some, strange.]

3. “…or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other…”

a. or else [2228 * e] [Strong: a primary particle of distinction between two connected terms; disjunctive, or; comparative, than:--and, but (either), (n-)either, except it be, (n-)or (else), rather, save, than, that, what, yea. Often used in connection with other particles.]

b. he will hold [472 * antechomai] [Strong: from 473 and the middle voice of 2192; to hold oneself opposite to, i.e. (by implication) adhere to; by extension to care for:--hold fast, hold to, support.]

c. to the one [1520 * heis] [Strong: (including the neuter (etc.) hen); a primary numeral; one:--a(-n, -ny, certain), + abundantly, man, one (another), only, other, some.]

d. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

e. despise [2706 * kataphroneo] [Strong: from 2596 and 5426; to think against, i.e. disesteem:--despise.]

f. the other [2087 * heteros] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; (an-, the) other or different:--altered, else, next (day), one, (an-)other, some, strange.]

4. “…Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

a. Ye cannot [3756 * ou] [Strong: also (before a vowel) ouk ook, and (before an aspirate) ouch ookh a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]

1). [dunamai] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; to be able or possible:--be able, can (do, + -not), could, may, might, be possible, be of power.]
2). The Greek word for “power ability and might” is coupled with “an absolute negative” which means “you cannot do”, hence, “Ye cannot”.

b. serve [1398 * douleuo] [Strong:  from 1401; to be a slave to (literal or figurative, involuntary or voluntary):--be in bondage, (do) serve(-ice).]

c. God [2316 * theos] [Strong:  of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

d. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

e. mammon [3126 * mammonas] [Strong: of Chaldee origin (confidence, i.e. wealth, personified); mammonas, i.e. avarice (deified):--mammon.]

1). As with anything money can be deified and turned into a god to be worshipped and served, but as the verse below testifies, Jesus said we can “be faithful in the unrighteous mammon”. In other words serve God faithfully and still handle money in a godly way and not be defiled.

2). It is interesting that in two instances when Jesus was speaking of money he referred to it as “unrighteous mammon”

a). Luke 16:9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

b). Luke 16:11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?
