Matthew 8:1

Matthew 8:1

When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.

a. NLT: Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside.

b. NIV: When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him.

c. YLT: And when he came down from the mount, great multitudes did follow him,

d. Amplified Bible: When Jesus came down from the mountain, great throngs followed Him.

e. Worrell Translation: And, when He came down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him.

1. “When he was come down from the mountain…”

a. when [1161 * de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. he [846 * autos] [Strong:  from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

c. was come down [2597 * katabaino] [Strong: from 2596 and the base of 939; to descend (literally or figuratively):--come (get, go, step) down, fall (down).]

d. from [575 * apo] [Strong: a primary particle; "off," i.e. away (from something near), in various senses (of place, time, or relation; literal or figurative):--(X here-)after, ago, at, because of, before, by (the space of), for(-th), from, in, (out) of, off, (up-)on(-ce), since, with. In composition (as a prefix) it usually denotes separation, departure, cessation, completion, reversal, etc.]

e. the mountain [3735 * oros] [Strong: probably from an obsolete oro (to rise or "rear"; perhaps akin to 142; compare 3733); a mountain (as lifting itself above the plain): -hill, mount(-ain).]

1). The mountain he was coming down from is the mountain where he preached the sermon on the mount. The sermon includes all of chapter 5, 6, & 7 of Matthew.

2. “…great multitudes followed him.”

b. multitudes [3793 * ochlos] [Strong: from a derivative of 2192 (meaning a vehicle); a throng (as borne along); by implication, the rabble; by extension, a class of people; figuratively, a riot:--company, multitude, number (of people), people, press.]

c. followed [190 * akoloutheo] [Strong: from 1 (as a particle of union) and keleuthos (a road); properly, to be in the same way with, i.e. to accompany (specially, as a disciple):--follow, reach.]
