Revelation 8:4

b. NIV: The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand.

c. YLT: and go up did the smoke of the perfumes to the prayers of the saints out of the hand of the messenger, before God;

d. Amplified Bible: And the smoke of the incense (the perfume) arose in the presence of God, with the prayers of the people of God (the saints), from the hand of the angel.

e. Worrell Translation: And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God out of the hand of the angel.

1. “And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints…”

a. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. the smoke [2586 * kapnos] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; smoke:--smoke.]

c. of the incense [2368 * thumiama] [Strong: from 2370; an aroma, i.e. fragrant powder burnt in religious service; by implication, the burning itself:--incense, odour.]

d. which came with the prayers [4335 * proseuche] [Strong: from 4336; prayer (worship); by implication, an oratory (chapel):--X pray earnestly, prayer.]

e. of the saints [40 * hagios] [Strong: from hagos (an awful thing) (compare 53, 2282); sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):--(most) holy (one, thing), saint.]

2. “…ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.”

a. ascended up [305 * anabaino] [Strong: from 303 and the base of 939; to go up (literally or figuratively):--arise, ascend (up), climb (go, grow, rise, spring) up, come (up).]

f. hand [5495 * cheir] [Strong: perhaps from the base of 5494 in the sense of its congener the base of 5490 (through the idea of hollowness for grasping); the hand (literally or figuratively (power); especially (by Hebraism) a means or instrument):--hand.]

1). Repeating what was said in the previous verse, this angel was operating in the office of the priest. The burning of incense on the altar of incense was the ministry of a priest and only of a priest.

a). Exodus 30:7, 8 And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it.
30:8 And when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations.

2). I personally believe that this priest was none other than Christ Jesus operating in His High Priest office.

a). Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin.
4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

b). Hebrews 8:1-3 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
8:2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
8:3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

c). Hebrews 9:11, 12 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
