1 Chronicles 15:2

Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever.

a. NLT: Then he commanded, “No one except the Levites may carry the Ark of God. The LORD has chosen them to carry the Ark of the LORD and to serve him forever.”

b. NIV: Then David said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever.”

c. YLT: Then said David, 'None are to carry the ark of God, except the Levites, for on them hath Jehovah fixed to carry the ark of God, and to serve Him -- unto the age.'

d. Amplified Bible Classic: Then David said, None should carry the ark of God but the Levites, for the Lord chose them to carry the ark of God and to minister to Him forever.

1. “Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites…”

e. ought to carry [Strong: 5375 *  nasa' naw-saw' or nacah (Psalm 4 : 6 (7)) {naw-saw'}; a primitive root; to lift, in a great variety of applications, literal and figurative, absol. and rel. i. the Levites [Strong: 3881 *  Leviyiy lay-vee-ee' or Leviy {lay-vee'}; patronymically from 3878; a Levite or descendant of Levi:--Leviite.]

1). Three months passed between the first attempt to bring the ark which resulted in disaster and the second attempt.

a). 1 Chronicles 13:13, 14 So David brought not the ark home to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite.
13:14 And the ark of God remained with the family of Obededom in his house three months. And the Lord blessed the house of Obededom, and all that he had.

2. “…for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever.”

c. the LORD [Strong: 3068 * Yhovah yeh-ho-vaw' from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]

d. to carry  [Strong: 5375 *  nasa' naw-saw' or nacah (Psalm 4 : 6 (7)) {naw-saw'}; a primitive root; to lift, in a great variety of applications, literal and figurative, absol. and rel. 1). Levites yes, but a particular family of Levites. There were three families of Levites who had particular duties of carrying the certain portions of the Tabernacle. It was the family of Gershonites to carry the tabernacle, the tent, the coverings, the hanging for the door of the tabernacle, the hangings of the court, the curtain for the door of the court and t cords for it (Numbers 3:25, 26). The sons of Merari had the responsibility of all the boards, the bars, the pillars, and the sockets of the tabernacle. They also were responsible for the pillars, the sockets, the pins and the cords of the court (Numbers 3:36, 37). It was the sons of Kohath that had the responsibility of all the furniture of the Tabernacle, including the Ark of the Covenant.

a). Numbers 3:27-31  And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izeharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites.
3:28 In the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary.
3:29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle southward.
3:30 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.
3:31 And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof.

g. and to minister [Strong: 8334 * sharath shaw-rath' a primitive root; to attend as a menial or worshipper; figuratively, to contribute to:--minister (unto), (do) serve(- ant, -ice, -itor), wait on.]

h. unto him [Strong: 5704 *  `ad ad properly, the same as 5703 (used as a preposition, adverb or conjunction; especially with a preposition); as far (or long, or much) as, whether of space (even unto) or time (during, while, until) or degree (equally with):--against, and, as, at, before, by (that), even (to), for(-asmuch as), (hither-)to, + how long, into, as long (much) as, (so) that, till, toward, until, when, while, (+ as) yet.]

i. forever [Strong: 5769 * `owlam o-lawm' or lolam {o-lawm'}; from 5956; properly, concealed, i.e. the vanishing point; generally, time out of mind (past or future), i.e. (practically) eternity; frequentatively, adverbial (especially with prepositional prefix) always:--alway(-s), ancient (time), any more, continuance, eternal, (for, (n-))ever(-lasting, -more, of old), lasting, long (time), (of) old (time), perpetual, at any time, (beginning of the) world (+ without end).]
