Hebrews 10:27

Hebrews 10:27

But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

a. NLT: There is only the terrible expectation of God’s judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies.

b. NIV: but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

c. YLT: but a certain fearful looking for of judgment, and fiery zeal, about to devour the opposers;

d. Amplified Bible: [There is nothing left for us then] but a kind of awful and fearful prospect and expectation of divine judgment and the fury of burning wrath and indignation which will consume those who put themselves in opposition [to God].

e. Worrell Translation: but a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fierceness of fire about to devour the opposers.

1. “But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation…”

e. of judgment [2920 * krisis] [Strong: decision (subjectively or objectively, for or against); by extension, a tribunal; by implication, justice (especially, divine law):--accusation, condemnation, damnation, judgment.]

f. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

g. fiery [4442 * pur] [Strong: a primary word; "fire" (literally or figuratively, specially, lightning):--fiery, fire.]

h. indignation [2205 * zelos] [Strong: from 2204; properly, heat, i.e. (figuratively) "zeal" (in a favorable sense, ardor; in an unfavorable one, jealousy, as of a husband (figuratively, of God), or an enemy, malice):--emulation, envy(-ing), fervent mind, indignation, jealousy, zeal.]

2. “…which shall devour the adversaries.”

a. which shall [3195 * mello] [Strong: a strengthened form of 3199 (through the idea of expectation); to intend, i.e. be about to be, do, or suffer something (of persons or things, especially events; in the sense of purpose, duty, necessity, probability, possibility, or hesitation):--about, after that, be (almost), (that which is, things, + which was for) to come, intend, was to (be), mean, mind, be at the point, (be) ready, + return, shall (begin), (which, that) should (after, afterwards, hereafter) tarry, which was for, will, would, be yet.]

c. the adversaries [5227 * hupenantios] [Strong: from 5259 and 1727; under (covertly) contrary to, i.e. opposed or (as noun) an opponent:--adversary, against.]
