Matthew 23:16

Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

1. “Woe unto you, ye blind guides…”

a. Woe [Strong: 3759. ouai oo-ah'-ee a primary exclamation of grief; "woe":--alas, woe.]

b. [unto] you [Strong: 5213. humin hoo-min' irregular dative case of 5210; to (with or by) you:--ye, you, your(-selves).]

c. [ye] blind [Strong: 5185. tuphlos toof-los' from, 5187; opaque (as if smoky), i.e. (by analogy) blind (physically or mentally):--blind.] [Thayer: to raise a smoke; hence, properly, 'darkened by smoke'), blind; as often in secular authors, mentally blind:]

1). Although this Greek word is used for physical blindness, in the context it is spiritual blindness and that is what Jesus meant.

a). Luke 6:39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

2). Just as we have physical senses, because we are spirit beings we have spiritual senses. In all the following examples the context is not the physical sense of sight but the spiritual.  

a). Revelation 3:14-17 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

2. “...which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!”

j. nothing [Strong: 3762. oudeis oo-dice', including feminine oudemia oo-dem-ee'-ah, and neuter ouden oo-den' from 3761 and 1520; not even one (man, woman or thing), i.e. none, nobody, nothing:--any (man), aught, man, neither any (thing), never (man), no (man), none (+ of these things), not (any, at all, -thing), nought.]
