 Philippians 4:2

I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.

1. “ I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.”


a. [I] beseech [Strong: 3870. parakaleo par-ak-al-eh'-o from 3844 and 2564; to call near, i.e. invite, invoke (by imploration, hortation or consolation):--beseech, call for, (be of good) comfort, desire, (give) exhort(-ation), intreat, pray.]


b. Euodias [Strong: 2136. Euodia yoo-od-ee'-ah from the same as 2137; fine travelling; Euodia, a Christian woman:--Euodias.]


1). Unger’s Bible Dictionary: Euo’dia (u-o’di-a; “a good journey”). A female member of the church at Philippi who seems to have been at variance with another female member named Syntyche (A.D. 58-60). Paul describes them a women who had “shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel,” and implores them to “live in harmony” (Philippians 4:2, 3).

1). Unger’s Bible Dictionary: SYN’TYCHE (sin’ti-che; “fortunate”). A Christian woman of Philippi, who seems to have been at variance with another female member named Euddias, or Euodia (Philippians 4:2, 3), A.D. 57. Paul entreats them to live in mutual harmony and mentions their names with a respect bordering on fondness, as fellow laborers in the gospel, whose names were written in the book of life. It has been surmised that they were deaconesses, in which case their good fellowship would be of almost vital  importance to the infant church.

g. mind [Strong: 5426. phroneo fron-eh'-o from 5424; to exercise the mind, i.e. entertain or have a sentiment or opinion; by implication, to be (mentally) disposed (more or less earnestly in a certain direction); intensively, to interest oneself in (with concern or obedience):--set the affection on, (be) care(-ful), (be like-, + be of one, + be of the same, + let this) mind(-ed), regard, savour, think.]

1). Barnes' Notes on the Bible: I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche - These are doubtless the names of females. The name Syntyche is sometimes the name of a man; but, if these persons are referred to in Philippians 4:3, there can be no doubt that they were females. Nothing more is known of them than is here mentioned. It has been commonly supposed that they were deaconesses, who preached the gospel to those of their own sex; but there is no certain evidence of this. All that is known is, that there was some disagreement between them, and the apostle entreats them to be reconciled to each other.
