 Judges 13:1

And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

1). The Jewish translation says, “The children of Israel CONTINUED to do evil in the eyes of HASHEM.” Looking at the Hebrew, they not only continued to do but increased in doing it more and more.

1). The phrase, “delivered them into” is a judicial act by God, that leads to bondage or addiction. When man by his own free will continually rejects and refuses God, what will happen is man is given up or over to the desires of his heart, the lusts in his heart. There is a similar English phrase in the Psalms that provides light on this.

   

a). Psalm 81:11, 12 But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.

81:12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.


2). The same line of thought is found in the New Testament in Romans where man continually refuses to obey and God as the God of the Universe gives them up or over to the lusts of their own heart. In His love and mercy He will plead with mankind to repent and obey Him but when we refuse to do so, he will give us up or over to their hearts desire.


a). Romans 1:21-28  Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;


b). Deuteronomy 31:16-18 And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.

31:17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?

31:18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.


3). “It is a great peculiarity in Hebrew, that verbs attribute and action to a person who is the doer of such an action, only in as much as he permits, or does not interfere to prevent it. 4). “One peculiarity of the Hebrew tongue is that it abounds in figures of speech that must necessarily be understood, to gain its intended meaning. The simple mode of life in which the earliest Israelites lived, doubtless made them great observers of nature; any reference to which , from their familiarity with it, made them require no explanations. Our difficulty here is to reconcile this with our ideas and language; and the neglect of these idioms with our translators, where they have given a literal translation, without the customary sense of the original, has led them into many errors.
