And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:

1. “And Jeroboam said in his heart…”

a. [And] Jeroboam [Strong: 3379 Yarob`am yaw-rob-awm' from 7378 and 5971; (the) people will contend; Jarobam, the name of two Israelite kings:--Jeroboam.]

b. said [Strong: 559 'amar aw-mar' a primitive root; to say (used with great latitude):--answer, appoint, avouch, bid, boast self, call, certify, challenge, charge, + (at the, give) command(-ment), commune, consider, declare, demand, X desire, determine, X expressly, X indeed, X intend, name, X plainly, promise, publish, report, require, say, speak (against, of), X still, X suppose, talk, tell, term, X that is, X think, use (speech), utter, X verily, X yet.]

1). This is the beginning of where Jeroboam began to go wrong, and it is the same with us. We must guard our hearts with right thinking, with Covenant thinking. We must keep before us what God has said about us and not allow our unrenewed mind or worse, the devil to inject wrong thoughts, thoughts that are the opposite of what God has said about us into our minds. This is one of the primary reasons for meditating the Scripture.

a). Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and thou shalt have good success.

b). 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;

10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exhalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

2. “…Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:”

a. Now [Strong: 6258 `attah at-taw' from 6256; at this time, whether adverb, conjunction or expletive:--henceforth, now, straightway, this time, whereas.]

b. [shall the] kingdom [Strong: 4467 mamlakah mam-law-kaw' from 4427; dominion, i.e. (abstractly) the estate (rule) or (concretely) the country (realm):--kingdom, king's, reign, royal.]

e. [of] David [Strong: 1732 David daw-veed' rarely (fully); Daviyd {daw-veed'}; from the same as 1730; loving; David, the youngest son of Jesse:--David.]

1). This line of thinking of Jeroboam’s was so contrary to what God had already told Jeroboam. God had already told Jeroboam that it was his will that Jeroboam be king over the ten tribes of Israel and that God himself would establish Jeroboam’s kingdom.

a). 1 Kings 11:29-39 And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:

11:30 And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces:

11:31 And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee:

11:32 (But he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:)

11:33 Because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father.

11:34 Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant's sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes:

11:35 But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes.

11:36 And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.

11:37 And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel.

11:38 And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that is right in my sight, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee.

11:39 And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever.

b). Jeroboam allowed his own thinking to lead him into believing something that was not true. He should have kept the above prophecy in his heart and meditated it and guarded his heart front believing wrong.
