2 Samuel 21:22

These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

a. NLT: These four Philistines were descendants of the giants of Gath, but David and his warriors killed them.

b. NIV: These four were descendants of Rapha in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.

c. Young’s Literal Translation: these four have been born to the giant in Gath, and they fall by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

d. Amplified Bible: These four were descended from the giant in Gath, and they fell by the hands of David and his servants.

e. Septuagint: These four were born descendants of the giants in Geth, the family of Rapha; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

1. “These four were born to the giant in Gath…”

a. [Strong: 853 'eth ayth apparent contracted from 226 in the demonstrative sense of entity; properly, self (but generally used to point out more definitely the object of a verb or preposition, even or namely):--(as such unrepresented in English).]

1). Dake: The last five giants slain. These 5 giants were brothers. In 2 Samuel 21:22 it states the four mentioned in that passage were brothers; and in 2 Samuel 21:19 and 1 Chronicles 20:5 it makes it clear that they were brothers of Goliath, who made up the 5.

a). Sippai (1 Chronicles 20:4). Called Saph (2 Samuel 21:18).

b). Lahmi, brother of Goliath (1 Chronicles 20:5; 2 Samuel 21:19).

c). The giant with 6 fingers and toes on each hand and foot (1 Chronicles 20:6, 7; 2 Samuel 21:20, 21).

d). Ishbi-benob (2 Samuel 21:16, 17).

e). Goliath (1 Samuel 17).

2). The phrase “born to the giant” could be a generic term indicating all of them were born from the giant species, or it may mean that Goliath and his brothers were born to the same giant.
2. “…and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.”
