And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.

1). J. Vernon McGee: Matthew’s gospel modestly passes over his call with only this verse. Luke tells us that Matthew made a great dinner in honor of Jesus (Luke 5:27-29). Evidently the incident which follows took place at this dinner. Matthew invited many of his publican friends to this dinner because he wanted them to know the Lord Jesus Christ.


2). These Invitations were merely invitations to be disciples. They were not the calls to become apostles, which would occur later (Matthew 10:1-5; Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:12-16).
