Genesis 16:11

Genesis 16:11

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, Thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.

a. NLT: And the angel also said, “You are now pregnant and will give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael (which means ‘God hears’), for the LORD has heard your cry of distress.

b. NIV: The angel of the LORD also said to her: “You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael,fn for the LORDhas heard of your misery.

c. YLT: and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, 'Behold thou artconceiving, and bearing a son, and hast called his name Ishmael, for Jehovah hath hearkened unto thine affliction;

d. Amplified Bible: And the Angel of the Lord continued, See now, you are with child and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Ishmael [God hears], because the Lord has heard and paid attention to your affliction.

e. Septuagint: And the angel of the Lord said to her, Behold thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ismael, for the Lord hath hearkened to thy humiliation.

f. Stone Edition Chumash: And an angel of HASHEM said to her, “Behold, you will conceive, and give birth to a son; you shall call his name Ishmael, for HASHEM has heard your prayer.

1). Note Stone Edition Chumash: Hagar had already been pregnant, but she had miscarried. Now the angel promised her that if she showed Sarah the proper respect, she would have a son destined for power and material greatness.

2). I think this is garbage. It was not God’s will for this union to occur. This certainly falls in with the warning in Titus 1:14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

1. “And the angel of the LORD said unto her…”

a. the angel [4397 * mal’ak] [Strong: from an unused root meaning to despatch as a deputy; a messenger; specifically, of God, i.e. an angel (also a prophet, priest or teacher):--ambassador, angel, king, messenger.]

b. of the LORD [3068 * Yhovah] [Strong: from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]

c. said unto her [559 * ‘amar] [Strong: a primitive root; to say (used with great latitude):--answer, appoint, avouch, bid, boast self, call, certify, challenge, charge, + (at the, give) command(-ment), commune, consider, declare, demand, X desire, determine, X expressly, X indeed, X intend, name, X plainly, promise, publish, report, require, say, speak (against, of), X still, X suppose, talk, tell, term, X that is, X think, use (speech), utter, X verily, X yet.]

1). No one but the LORD God could say these words, this to me is convincing proof that this was no angel, but God himself.

2. “…Behold, Thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael…”

a. behold [2009 * hinneh] [Strong: prolongation for 2005; lo!:--behold, lo, see.]

b. thou art with child [2030 * harah] [Strong: from 2029; pregnant:--(be, woman) with child, conceive, X great.]

c. and shalt bear [3205 * yalad] [Strong: a primitive root; to bear young; causatively, to beget; medically, to act as midwife; specifically, to show lineage:--bear, beget, birth((-day)), born, (make to) bring forth (children, young), bring up, calve, child, come, be delivered (of a child), time of delivery, gender, hatch, labour, (do the office of a) midwife, declare pedigrees, be the son of, (woman in, woman that) travail(-eth, -ing woman).]

d. a son [1121 * ben] [Strong: from 1129; a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc., (like 1, 251, etc.)):--+ afflicted, age, (Ahoh-) (Ammon-) (Hachmon-) (Lev-)ite, (anoint-)ed one, appointed to, (+) arrow, (Assyr-) (Babylon-) (Egypt-) (Grec-)ian, one born, bough, branch, breed, + (young) bullock, + (young) calf, X came up in, child, colt, X common, X corn, daughter, X of first, + firstborn, foal, + very fruitful, + postage, X in, + kid, + lamb, (+) man, meet, + mighty, + nephew, old, (+) people, + rebel, + robber, X servant born, X soldier, son, + spark, + steward, + stranger, X surely, them of, + tumultuous one, + valiant(-est), whelp, worthy, young (one), youth.]

e. and shalt call [7121 * qara’] [Strong: a primitive root (rather identical with 7122 through the idea of accosting a person met); to call out to (i.e. properly, address by name, but used in a wide variety of applications):--bewray (self), that are bidden, call (for, forth, self, upon), cry (unto), (be) famous, guest, invite, mention, (give) name, preach, (make) proclaim(- ation), pronounce, publish, read, renowned, say.]

f. his name [8034 * shem] [Strong: a primitive word (perhaps rather from 7760 through the idea of definite and conspicuous position; Compare 8064); an appellation, as a mark or memorial of individuality; by implication honor, authority, character:--+ base, (in-)fame(-ous), named(-d), renown, report.]

g. Ishmael [3458 * Yishmael] [Strong: from 8085 and 410; God will hear; Jishmael, the name of Abraham's oldest son, and of five Israelites:--Ishmael.]

1). Ishmael was named by God before his birth. This happened only six other times in Scripture, and this is the first of seven.

a). Isaac Genesis 17:19.

b). Solomon: 1 Chronicles 22:9.

c). Josiah: 1 Kings 13:2

d). Cyrus: Isaiah 44:28-45:1

e). John the Baptist: Luke 1:31, 60-63.

f). Jesus: Matthew 1:21.

2). Ishmael was given a prophetic name. This is firstly shown in the incident where Hagar and Ishmael are thrust out after the birth of Isaac.

a). Genesis 21:14-19 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
21:15 And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.
21:16 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice and wept.
21:17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her What aileth thee, Hagar? Fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.
21:18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.
21:19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water , and gave the lad drink.

3). I personally believe there is a present and a future movement of the Arab people to the gospel of Jesus Christ. The name of Ishmael is prophetic in that sense also. Isaiah 19 speaks of Egypt and Assyria turning to the Lord. Some of this is referring to the millennial kingdom, but some of it, because of the meaning of Ishmael’s name, takes place before.

a). Isaiah 19:21-25 And the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow a vow unto the LORD, and perform it.
19:22 And the LORD shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it: and they shall return even to the LORD, and he shall be intreated of them, and shall heal them.
19:23 In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.
19:24 In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:
19:25 Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.
