Genesis 17:9

Genesis 17:9  

And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

a. NLT: Then God said to Abraham, “Your responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant. You and all your descendants have this continual responsibility.

b. NIV: Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.

c. YLT: And God saith unto Abraham, 'And thou dost keep My covenant, thou and thy seed after thee, to their generations;

d. Amplified Bible: And God said to Abraham, As for you, you shall therefore keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.

e. Septuagint: And God said to Abraam, Thou also shalt fully keep my covenant, thou and thy seed after thee for their generations.

a. God [3068 * Yhovah] [Strong: from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]

b. said [559 * ‘amar] [Strong: a primitive root; to say (used with great latitude):--answer, appoint, avouch, bid, boast self, call, certify, challenge, charge, + (at the, give) command(-ment), commune, consider, declare, demand, X desire, determine, X expressly, X indeed, X intend, name, X plainly, promise, publish, report, require, say, speak (against, of), X still, X suppose, talk, tell, term, X that is, X think, use (speech), utter, X verily, X yet.]

c. Abraham [1 * ‘Abraham] [Strong:  contracted from 1 and an unused root (probably meaning to be populous); father of a multitude; Abraham, the later name of Abram:--Abraham.]

2. “…Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.”

a. thou shalt keep [8104 * shamar] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to hedge about (as with thorns), i.e. guard; generally, to protect, attend to, etc.:--beward, be circumspect, take heed (to self), keep(-er, self), mark, look narrowly, observe, preserve, regard, reserve, save (self), sure, (that lay) wait (for), watch(-man)]

b. my covenant [1285 * bryith] [Strong: from 1262 (in the sense of cutting (like 1254)); a compact (because made by passing between pieces of flesh):--confederacy, (con-)feder(-ate), covenant, league.]
c. thou and thy seed [2233 * zera] [Strong: from 2232; seed; figuratively, fruit, plant, sowing-time, posterity:--X carnally, child, fruitful, seed(-time), sowing- time.]

d. after thee [310 * ‘achar] [Strong: from 309; properly, the hind part; generally used as an adverb or conjunction, after (in various senses):--after (that, -ward), again, at, away from, back (from, -side), behind, beside, by, follow (after, -ing), forasmuch, from, hereafter, hinder end, + out (over) live, + persecute, posterity, pursuing, remnant, seeing, since, thence(-forth), when, with.]

e. in their generations [1755 * dowr] [Strong: from 1752; properly, a revolution of time, i.e. an age or generation; also a dwelling:--age, X evermore, generation, (n-)ever, posterity.]
