1 Corinthians 11:23

1 Corinthians 11:23

For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

a. NLT: For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread

b. NIV: For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,

c. YLT: For I -- I received from the Lord that which also I did deliver to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was delivered up, took bread,

d. Amplified Bible: For I received from the Lord Himself that which I passed on to you [it was given to me personally], that the Lord Jesus on the night when He was treacherously delivered up and while His betrayal was in progress took bread,

e. Worrell Translation: For I have received from the Lord that which also I delivered  to you: that  the Lord Jesus, in the same night in which He was being betrayed, took bread;

1. “For I have received of the Lord…”

a. For [1063 * gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. I [1473 * ego] [Strong: a primary pronoun of the first person I (only expressed when emphatic):--I, me.

c. have received [4880 * paralambano] [Strong: from 3844 and 2983; to receive near, i.e. associate with oneself (in any familiar or intimate act or relation); by analogy, to assume an office; figuratively, to learn:--receive, take (unto, with).]

d. of [575 * apo] [Strong: a primary particle; "off," i.e. away (from something near), in various senses (of place, time, or relation; literal or figurative):--(X here-)after, ago, at, because of, before, by (the space of), for(-th), from, in, (out) of, off, (up-)on(-ce), since, with. In composition (as a prefix) it usually denotes separation, departure, cessation, completion, reversal, etc.]

e. the Lord [2962 * kurios] [Strong: from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord, master, Sir.]

1). There are passages in Scripture relating to the Lord giving Paul revelation that are brought up concerning 1 Corinthians 11:23-34, when this may have occurred. The Damascus road experience (Acts 9:1-9; Acts 26:12-18), which is highly unlikely studying the general content of the revelation. Another is 2 Corinthians 12:2-4; again looking at the general content of the passage it is clear that Paul was not permitted to share what  he had received. My preference is to believe that Paul received the content of the New Covenant including the revelation concerning eating and drinking communion at a separate time, closer to his Damascus road experience. The content of the revelation was about the New Covenant and had to be included in the books of the New Testament which Paul wrote.

a). Galatians 1:11, 12 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
1:12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

b). My personal opinion is that Paul received the bulk of the revelation of the New Covenant when he went into Arabia (modern Saudi Arabia), to Mt. Sinai after his conversion (Galatians 1:17).

2. “…that which also I delivered unto you…”

a. that which [3739 * hos; including feminine he; and neuter ho] [Strong: probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

b. also [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

c. I delivered [3860 * paradidomi] [Strong: from 3844 and 1325; to surrender, i.e yield up, intrust, transmit:--betray, bring forth, cast, commit, deliver (up), give (over, up), hazard, put in prison, recommend.]

d. unto you [5213 * humin] [Strong: irregular dative case of 5210; to (with or by) you:--ye, you, your(-selves).]

1). Most Christians know that “the last supper” the evening before he was crucified in the Gospels was really Jesus celebrating the Jewish Passover. Jesus was not just celebrating the Passover though, for he went on to tell them he was instituting the New Covenant. In this passage 1 Corinthians 11:23-34, the Apostle Paul is teaching on communion and went into more detail.

2. “…that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:”

a. that [3754 * hoti] [Strong: neuter of 3748 as conjunction; demonstrative, that (sometimes redundant); causative, because:--as concerning that, as though, because (that), for (that), how (that), (in) that, though, why.]

b. the Lord [2962 * kurios] [Strong: from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord, master, Sir.]

c. Jesus [2424 * Iesous] [Strong: of Hebrew origin (3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:--Jesus.]

d. the same night [3571 * nux] [Strong: a primary word; "night" (literally or figuratively):-- (mid-)night.]

e. in [1722 * en] [Strong: a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

f. which [3739 * hos; including feminine he; and neuter ho] [Strong: probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

g. he was betrayed [3860 * paradidomi] [Strong: from 3844 and 1325; to surrender, i.e yield up, intrust, transmit:--betray, bring forth, cast, commit, deliver (up), give (over, up), hazard, put in prison, recommend.]

h. took [2983 * lambano] [Strong: a prolonged form of a primary verb, which is use only as an alternate in certain tenses; to take (in very many applications, literally and figuratively (properly objective or active, to get hold of; whereas 1209 is rather subjective or passive, to have offered to one; while 138 is more violent, to seize or remove)):--accept, + be amazed, assay, attain, bring, X when I call, catch, come on (X unto), + forget, have, hold, obtain, receive (X after), take (away, up).]

i. bread [740 * artos] [Strong: from 142; bread (as raised) or a loaf:--(shew-)bread, loaf.]
