1 Corinthians 11:26

1 Corinthians 11:26

For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

a. NLT: For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.

b. NIV: For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

c. YLT: for as often as ye may eat this bread, and this cup may drink, the death of the Lord ye do shew forth -- till he may come;

d. Amplified Bible Classic: For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are representing and signifying and proclaiming the fact of the Lord’s death until He comes [again].

e. Worrell Translation: for, as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord’s death, till He come.

1. “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup…”

a. For [1063 * gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. as often as [302 * an] [Strong: a primary particle, denoting a supposition, wish, possibility or uncertainty:--(what-, where-, wither-, who-)soever. Usually unexpressed except by the subjunctive or potential mood.]

c. as often [3740 * hosakis] [Strong: multiple adverb from 3739; how (i.e. with 302, so) many times as:--as oft(-en) as.]

1). There is no prescribed frequency or infrequency.

d. ye eat [2068 * esthio] [Strong: strengthened for a primary edo (to eat); used only in certain tenses, the rest being supplied by 5315; to eat (usually literal):--devour, eat, live.]

e. this [5126 * touton] [Strong: accusative case singular masculine of 3778; this (person, as objective of verb or preposition):--him, the same, that, this.]

f. bread [740 * artos] [Strong: from 142; bread (as raised) or a loaf:--(shew-)bread, loaf.]

g. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

h. drink [4095 * pino] [Strong: a prolonged form of pio pee'-o, which (together with another form) poo po'-o occurs only as an alternate in certain tenses; to imbibe (literally or figuratively):--drink.]

i. cup [4221 * poterion] [Strong: neuter of a derivative of the alternate of 4095; a drinking-vessel; by extension, the contents thereof, i.e. a cupful (draught); figuratively, a lot or fate:--cup.]

2. “…ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.”

a. ye do shew [2605 * kataggello] [Strong: from 2596 and the base of 32; to proclaim, promulgate:--declare, preach, shew, speak of, teach.]

b. the Lord’s [2962 * kurios] [Strong: from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord, master, Sir.]

c. death [2288 * Thanatos] [Strong: from 2348; (properly, an adjective used as a noun) death (literally or figuratively):--X deadly, (be...) death.]

1). Showing the Lord’s death is as the definitions say, we declare, we preach, we proclaim his death, all that was accomplished for us at the cross, healing and wholeness for the whole man and woman, Isaiah 53:4, 5; 1 Peter 2:24; Matthew 8:16, 17.

d. till [891 * achri; or achris] [Strong: akin to 206 (through the idea of a terminus); (of time) until or (of place) up to:--as far as, for, in(-to), till, (even, un-)to, until, while.]

e. [302 * an] [Strong: a primary particle, denoting a supposition, wish, possibility or uncertainty:--(what-, where-, wither-, who-)soever. Usually unexpressed except by the subjunctive or potential mood.]

f. he [3739 * hos; including feminine he; and neuter ho] [Strong: probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

g. come [2064 * erchomai] [Strong: middle voice of a primary verb (used only in the present and imperfect tenses, the others being supplied by a kindred (middle voice) eleuthomai el-yoo'-thom-ahee, or (active) eltho el'-tho, which do not otherwise occur) to come or go (in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively):--accompany, appear, bring, come, enter, fall out, go, grow, X light, X next, pass, resort, be set.]

1). It seems the first verses of this passage, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 show the positive side and wonderful benefits of taking communion where the last verses of the passage, 1 Corinthians 11:27-32 show the negative, or the dangers of not taking it as seriously as needed.
