Jeremiah 17:5

Jeremiah 17:5

Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.

a. ASV: Thus saith Jehovah: Cursed is the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from Jehovah.

b. YLT: Thus said Jehovah: Cursed is the man who doth trust in man, And hath made flesh his arm, And from Jehovah whose heart turneth.

c. Classic Amplified: Thus says the Lord: Cursed [with great evil] is the strong man who trusts in and relies on frail man, making weak [human] flesh his arm, and whose mind and heart turn aside from the Lord.

d. Septuagint: Cursed is the man who trusts in man, and will lean his arm of flesh upon him, while his heart departs from the Lord. 

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/ Writings: Thus sauth HASHEM: Accursed is the man who trusts in people and makes flesh[and blood] his strength and turns his heart away from HASHEM.

1. “Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man…”

a. Thus [Strong: 3541  koh ko from the prefix k and 1931; properly, like this, i.e. by implication, (of manner) thus (or so); also (of place) here (or hither); or (of time) now:--also, here, + hitherto, like, on the other side, so (and much), such, on that manner, (on) this (manner, side, way, way and that way), + mean while, yonder.]

e. [be the] man [Strog: 1397 geber, gheh'-ber; from H1396; properly, a valiant man or warrior; generally, a person simply:—every one, man, × mighty.]

f. that [Strong: 834  'aher ash-er' a primitive relative pronoun (of every gender and number); who, which, what, that; also (as an adverb and a conjunction) when, where, how, because, in order that, etc.:--X after, X alike, as (soon as), because, X every, for, + forasmuch, + from whence, + how(-soever), X if, (so) that ((thing) which, wherein), X though, + until, + whatsoever, when, where (+ -as, -in, -of, -on, -soever, -with), which, whilst, + whither(- soever), who(-m, -soever, -se). g. trusteth [Strong: 982 bâṭach, baw-takh'; a primitive root; properly, to hie for refuge (but not so precipitately as H2620); figuratively, to trust, be confident or sure:—be bold (confident, secure, sure), careless (one, woman), put confidence, (make to) hope, (put, make to) trust.]

h. [in] man [Strong: 120 ʼâdam, aw-dam'; from H119; ruddy i.e. a human being (an individual or the species, mankind, etc.):—× another, hypocrite, common sort, × low, man (mean, of low degree), person.]

1). So many times in the study of this passage (Jeremiah 17:5-8) the stark differences will be shown between trusting in God and trusting in man. The main indicator is where is the mind of the individual, where are his thoughts. The individual who trusts God will have his thoughts on the word of God. The individual who does not trust God will not be meditating God;s word but instead will be trying to figure it out himself or worrying about the circumstances.

a). Isaiah 26:3, 4 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.
26:4 Trust ye in the LORD forever: for in the LORD Jehovah is everlasting strength. 
2. “...and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.”

a. b. flesh [Strong: 1320  bâsâr, baw-sawr'; from H1319; flesh (from its freshness); by extension, body, person; also (by euphemistically) the pudenda of a man:—body, (fat, lean) flesh(-ed), kin, (man-) kind, nakedness, self, skin.]

c. [his] arm [Strong: 2220 zᵉrôwaʻ, zer-o'-ah; or (shortened) זְרֹעַ zᵉrôaʻ; and (feminine) זְרוֹעָה zᵉrôwʻâh; or זְרֹעָה zᵉrôʻâh; from H2232; the arm (as stretched out), or (of animals) the foreleg; figuratively, force:—arm, help, mighty, power, shoulder, strength.

1). The arm of is figurative language meaning power and strength, either of man or God.

a). Isaiah 51:9 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?

b). John 12:37, 38 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:
12:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

c). Job 26:2 How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength?

d). 2 Chronicles 32:8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

d. [and whose] heart [Strong: 3820 lêb, labe; a form of H3824; the heart; also used (figuratively) very widely for the feelings, the will and even the intellect; likewise for the centre of anything:—care for, comfortably, consent, × considered, courag(-eous), friend(-ly), ((broken-), (hard-), (merry-), (stiff-), (stout-), double) heart(-ed), × heed, × I, kindly, midst, mind(-ed), × regard(-ed), × themselves, × unawares, understanding, × well, willingly, wisdom.]

e. departeth [Strong: 5493 çûwr, soor; or שׂוּר sûwr; (Hosea 9:12), a primitive root; to turn off (literally or figuratively):—be(-head), bring, call back, decline, depart, eschew, get (you), go (aside), × grievous, lay away (by), leave undone, be past, pluck away, put (away, down), rebel, remove (to and fro), revolt, × be sour, take (away, off), turn (aside, away, in), withdraw, be without.]

g. [the] LORD [Strong: 3068 Yᵉhôvâh, yeh-ho-vaw'; from H1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jeho-vah, Jewish national name of God:—Jehovah, the Lord.]

1). A heart that departs from the LORD is on the path to a hardened heart.

a). Hebrews 3:7-13  Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
3:8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
3:9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
3:10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
3:11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
