1 Timothy 3:2

1 Timothy 3:2

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

a. ASV: The bishop therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, orderly, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

b. YLT: It behoveth, therefore, the overseer to be blameless, of one wife a husband, vigilant, sober, decent, a friend of strangers, apt to teach,
d. Amplified Bible Classic: Now a bishop (superintendent, overseer) must give no grounds for accusation but must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, circumspect and temperate and self-controlled; [he must be] sensible and well behaved and dignified and lead an orderly (disciplined) life; [he must be] hospitable [showing love for and being a friend to the believers, especially strangers or foreigners, and be] a capable and qualified teacher,
1. “A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife…”

a. [A] bishop [Strong: 1985 epískopos, ep-is'-kop-os; from G1909 and G4649 (in the sense of G1983); a superintendent, i.e. Christian officer in genitive case charge of a (or the) church (literally or figuratively):—bishop, overseer.]
b. then [Strong: 3767 oûn, oon; apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:—and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore.]
c. must [Strong: 1163 deî, die; 3rd person singular active present of G1210; also deon deh-on'; neuter active participle of the same; both used impersonally; it is (was, etc.) necessary (as binding):—behoved, be meet, must (needs), (be) need(-ful), ought, should.]
d. be [Strong: 1511 eînai, i'-nahee; present infinitive from G1510; to exist:—am, was. come, is, ×lust after, × please well, there is, to be, was.]
e. blameless [Strong: 423 anepílēptos, an-ep-eel'-ape-tos; from G1 (as a negative particle) and a derivative of G1949; not arrested, i.e. (by implication) inculpable:—blameless, unrebukeable.]

f. [the] husband [Strong: 435 anḗr, an'-ayr; a primary word (compare G444); a man (properly as an individual male):—fellow, husband, man, sir.]

g. of one [Strong: 3391 mía, mee'-ah; irregular feminine of G1520; one or first:—a (certain), + agree, first, one, × other.]
h. wife [Strong: 1135 gynḗ, goo-nay'; probably from the base of G1096; a woman; specially, a wife:—wife, woman.]

1). One wife means he is not a polygamist. The ideal from Creation was one wife.

a). Matthew 19:4-9   And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
19:6  Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
2. “...vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;”

a. vigilant [Strong: 3524 nēpháleos, nay-fal'-eh-os; from G3525; sober, i.e. (figuratively) circumspect:—sober.]
b. sober [Strong: 4998 sṓphrōn, so'-frone; from the base of G4982 and that of G5424; safe (sound) in mind, i.e. self-controlled (moderate as to opinion or passion):—discreet, sober, temperate.]
c. [of] good behavior [Strong: 2887 kósmios, kos'-mee-os; from G2889 (in its primary sense); orderly, i.e. decorous:—of good behaviour, modest.]
d. [given to] hospitality [Strong: 5382 philóxenos, fil-ox'-en-os; from G5384 and G3581; fond of guests, i.e. hospitable:—given to (lover of, use) hospitality.]
e. apt to teach [Strong: 1317 didaktikós, did-ak-tik-os'; from G1318; instructive ("didactic"):—apt to teach.]
