Matthew 10:13

And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

a. NLT: If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing.

b. NIV: If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you.

c. YLT: and if indeed the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it; and if it be not worthy, let your peace turn back to you.

d. Amplified: Then if indeed that house is deserving, let come upon it your peace [that is, freedom from all the distresses that are experienced as the result of sin]. But if it is not deserving, let your peace return to you.

e. Worrell Translation: and, if, indeed, the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

1. “And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it…”

a. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

e. worthy [514 * axios][Strong: deserving, comparable or suitable (as if drawing praise):--due reward, meet, (un-)worthy.][Thayer: weighing, having weight, having the weight of another thing of like value, worth as much, befitting, congruous, corresponding to a thing, of one who has merited anything worthy, both in a good and a bad sense.]

1).Other than the definitions themselves there is a passage within this chapter that gives two characteristics of those who are not “worthy”. One is loving family members more than God and the other is refusing to take up the cross of discipleship.

a). Matthew 10:37, 38 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

2). There are other uses of this particular Greek word that have a bearing on the text. In its use it refers to our lifestyles our “fruits”. Our lives must back up our professions. If we profess to be Christians we must live like it.

a). Luke 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

3). We must not reject the gospel.

a). Acts13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

4). Pursue a lifestyle to grow in faith.

a). 2 Thessalonians 1:3-5 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;
1:4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:
1:5 Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer.
