John 17:11

John 17:11

And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

a. NLT:  Now I am departing from the world; they are staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, you have given me your name; now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are.

b. NIV: I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power offn your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.

c. YLT: and no more am I in the world, and these are in the world, and I come unto Thee. Holy Father, keep them in Thy name, whom Thou hast given to me, that they may be one as we;

d. Amplified Bible Classic:  And [now] I am no more in the world, but these are [still] in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, keep in Your Name [[a]in the knowledge of Yourself] those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We [are one].

1. “And now I am no more in the world…”

2. “…but these are in the world, and I come to thee…”

3. “…Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me…”

i. me [3427 * moi] [Strong: the simpler form of 1698; to me:--I, me, mine, my.]

4. “…that they may be one, as we are.”

a. that [2443 * hina] [Strong: probably from the same as the former part of 1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that (denoting the purpose or the result):--albeit, because, to the intent (that), lest, so as, (so) that, (for) to.]

b. they may be [5600 * ou, including the oblique forms, as well as es ace; e ay; etc. the subjunctive of 1510; (may, might, can, could, would, should, must, etc.; also with 1487 and its comparative, as well as with other particles) be:--+ appear, are, (may, might, should) be, X have, is, + pass the flower of her age, should stand, were.]

c. one [1520 * heis] [Strong: a primary numeral; one:--a(-n, -ny, certain), + abundantly, man, one (another), only, other, some.]

d. as [2531 * kathos] [Strong: from 2596 and 5613; just (or inasmuch) as, that:--according to, (according, even) as, how, when.]

e. we [2249 * hemeis] [Strong:  nominative plural of 1473; we (only used when emphatic):--us, we (ourselves).]

1). The prayer the we would be one with God and Jesus as they are one is prayed 3 times in this chapter, here in John 17:11 and two other times.

a). John 17:21-23 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
17:23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

2). The main purpose for this repeated phrase is to emphasize God’s desire to have intimate relationship with us.
