John 17:12
While I was with them in the world, I kept them in
thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but
the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
a. NLT: During my time here, I protected them by the power of the name
you gave me. I guarded them so that not one was lost, except the one
headed for destruction, as the Scriptures foretold.
b. NIV: While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe byfn that
name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so
that Scripture would be fulfilled.
c. YLT: when I was with them in the world, I was keeping them in Thy
name; those whom Thou hast given to me I did guard, and none of them was
destroyed, except the son of the destruction, that the Writing may be
fulfilled.
d. Amplified Bible Classic: While I was with them, I kept and preserved
them in Your Name [in the knowledge and worship of You]. Those You have given
Me I guarded and protected, and not one of them has perished or is
lost except the son of perdition [Judas Iscariot—the one who is now doomed to
destruction, destined to be lost], that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
e. Worrell Translation: While I was with them, I was keeping, in Thy
name, those Whom Thou hast given Me; and I guarded them, and no one of them
perished, except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

b. the son [5207 * huios] [Strong: apparently a primary word; a
"son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote

1). Albert Barnes Commentary: The term son was given by the Hebrews to
those who possessed the character described by the word or name following.
Thus, sons of Belial - those who possessed his character; children of wisdom
those who were wise, Matthew 11:19. Thus Judas is called a son of
perdition because he had the character of a destroyer. He was a traitor and a
murderer. And this shows that he who knew the heart regarded his character as
that of a wicked man one whose appropriate name was that of a son of perdition.
c. of perdition [684 * apoliea] [Strong: from a presumed derivative of
622; ruin or loss (physical, spiritual or eternal):--damnable(-nation), destruction,
die, perdition, X perish, pernicious ways, waste.]
1). The phrase “son of perdition” is only found in one other place in
the New Testament.
a). 2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no
man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there
come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of
perdition;
2). This has led some to believe that Judas will be resurrected and
become the anti-Christ.
d. that [2443 * hina] [Strong: probably from the same as the former
part of 1438 (through the demonstrative idea; compare 3588); in order that
