Zephaniah 3:13

Zephaniah 3:13

The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

a. NLT: The remnant of Israel will do no wrong; they will never tell lies or deceive one another. They will eat and sleep in safety, and no one will make them afraid.”

b. NIV: They will do no wrong; they will tell no lies. A deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths. They will eat and lie down and no one will make them afraid.”

c. YLT: The remnant of Israel do no perversity, nor speak lies, Nor found in their mouth is a deceitful tongue, For they have delight, and have lain down, And there is none troubling.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: What is left of Israel shall not do iniquity or speak lies, neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth, for they shall feed and lie down and none shall make them afraid.

e. Septuagint: and the remnant of Israel shall fear the name of the Lord, and shall do no iniquity, neither shall they speak vanity neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed, and lie down, and there shall be none to terrify them.

f. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: The remnant of Israel will not commit corruption, they will not speak falsehood, and a deceitful tongue will not be found  in their mouth; for they will graze and lie down with none to make them afraid.

1. “The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity…”

a. The remnant [7611 * sh'eriyth] [Strong: from 7604; a remainder or residual (surviving, final) portion:--that had escaped, be left, posterity, remain(-der), remnant, residue, rest.]

b. of Israel [3478 * Yisra'el] [Strong: from 8280 and 410; he will rule as God; Jisrael, a symbolical name of Jacob; also (typically) of his posterity: --Israel.]

d. iniquity [5766 * `evel; or lavel; and (feminine) lavlah; or owlah; or .olah] [Strong: from 5765; (moral) evil:--iniquity, perverseness, unjust(-ly), unrighteousness(-ly); wicked(-ness).]

2. “…nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth…”


 a. nor speak [1696 * dabar] [Strong: a primitive root; perhaps properly, to arrange; but used figuratively (of words), to speak; rarely (in a destructive sense) to subdue:--answer, appoint, bid, command, commune, declare, destroy, give, name, promise, pronounce, rehearse, say, speak, be spokesman, subdue, talk, teach, tell, think, use (entreaties), utter, X well, X work.]

b. lies [3577 * kazab] [Strong: from 3576; falsehood; literally (untruth) or figuratively (idol):--deceitful, false, leasing, + liar, lie, lying.]

c. neither shall a deceitful [8649 * tormah; and tarmuwth, or tarmiyth] [Strong: from 7411; fraud:--deceit(-ful), privily.]

d. tongue [3956 * lashown; or lashon; also (in plural) feminine lshonah] [Strong: from 3960; the tongue (of man or animals), used literally (as the instrument of licking, eating, or speech), and figuratively (speech, an ingot, a fork of flame, a cove of water):--+ babbler,bay, + evil speaker, language, talker, tongue, wedge.]

e. be found [4672 *  matsa'] [Strong: a primitive root; properly, to come forth to, i.e. appear or exist; transitively, to attain, i.e. find or acquire; figuratively, to occur, meet or be present:--+ be able, befall, being, catch, X certainly, (cause to) come (on, to, to hand), deliver, be enough (cause to) find(-ing, occasion, out), get (hold upon), X have (here), be here, hit, be left, light (up-)on, meet (with), X occasion serve, (be) present, ready, speed, suffice, take hold on.]

f. in their mouth [6310 * peh] [Strong: from 6284; the mouth (as the means of blowing), whether literal or figurative (particularly speech); specifically edge, portion or side; adverbially (with preposition) according to:--accord(-ing as, -ing to), after, appointment, assent, collar, command(-ment), X eat, edge, end, entry, + file, hole, X in, mind, mouth, part, portion, X (should) say(-ing), sentence, skirt, sound, speech, X spoken, talk, tenor, X to, + two-edged, wish, word.]

3. “…for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.”

a. for they shall feed [7462 * ra`ah] [Strong: a primitive root; to tend a flock; i.e. pasture it; intransitively, to graze (literally or figuratively); generally to rule; by extension, to associate with (as a friend):--X break, companion, keep company with, devour, eat up, evil entreat, feed, use as a friend, make friendship with, herdman, keep (sheep)(-er), pastor, + shearing house, shepherd, wander, waste.]

b. and lie down [7257 * rabats] [Strong: a primitive root; to crouch (on all four legs folded, like a recumbent animal); be implication, to recline, repose, brood, lurk, imbed:--crouch (down), fall down, make a fold, lay, (cause to, make to) lie (down), make to rest, sit.]

c. and none shall make them afraid [2729 * charad] [Strong: a primitive root; to shudder with terror; hence, to fear; also to hasten (with anxiety):--be (make) afraid, be careful, discomfit, fray (away), quake, tremble.]

1). At this time we are in the beginning of the Millennial Reign of Christ. Israel as a nation has returned to the LORD. These verses deal with some of the moral Covenant realities between Israel and God. Harmful things do not come out of their mouth and they are not afraid.
