Acts 2:39

Acts 2:39

For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

a. ASV: For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him.

b. YLT: For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all those afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call.'

c. Amplified Bible: For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is to and for you and your children, and to and for all that are far away, [even] to and for as many as the Lord our God invites and bids to come to Himself.

1. “For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off…”

a. For [Strong: 1063 gár, gar; a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):—and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.] [The KJV translates Strong's G1063 in the following manner: for (1,027x), miscellaneous (28x), not translated (12x).]

b. the [Strong: 3588 [he] ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. T.]

c. promise [Strong: 1860 epangelía, ep-ang-el-ee'-ah; from G1861; an announcement (for information, assent or pledge; especially a divine assurance of good):—message, promise.] [The KJV translates Strong's G1860 in the following manner: promise (52x), message (1x).]

d. is [Strong: 2076 estí, es-tee'; third person singular present indicative of G1510; he (she or it) is; also (with neuter plural) they are:—are, be(-long), call, X can(-not), come, consisteth, × dure for a while, + follow, × have, (that) is (to say), make, meaneth, × must needs, + profit, + remaineth, + wrestle.] [The KJV translates Strong's G2076 in the following manner: is (744x), are (51x), was (29x), be (25x), have (11x), not translated (15x), miscellaneous (25x), vr is (1x).]

e. [unto] you [Strong: 5213 hymîn, hoo-min'; irregular dative case of G5210; to (with or by) you:—ye, you, your(-selves).] [The KJV translates Strong's G5213 in the following manner: you (598x), ye (13x), your (6x), not translated (2x), miscellaneous (3x).]

f. and [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.] [The KJV translates Strong's G2532 in the following manner: and (8,173x), also (514x), even (108x), both (43x), then (20x), so (18x), likewise (13x), not tr. (350x), miscellaneous (31x), vr and (1x).]

g. [to] your [Strong: 5216 hymōn, hoo-mone'; genitive case of G5210; of (from or concerning) you:—ye, you, your (own, -selves).] [The KJV translates Strong's G5216 in the following manner: your (359x), you (203x), ye (9x), yours (5x), not tr. (1x), miscellaneous (6x).]

h. n. [are] afar off [Strong: 3112 makrán, mak-ran'; feminine accusative case singular of G3117 (G3598 being implied); at a distance (literally or figuratively):—(a-)far (off), good (great) way off.] [The KJV translates Strong's G3112 in the following manner: far (4x), afar off (2x), good way off (1x), far hence (1x), great way off (1x), far off (1x).]

1). The promise Peter is referring is the promise of the Holy Ghost.

a). Acts 2: 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

2). What the crowd saw and heard of course was the speaking in tongues of the disciples.

a). Acts 2:7-11 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
2:9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
2:10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

b). These witnesses by themselves prove that the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking with other tongues was ordained by God not to pass away but to continue to the end of the dispensation of grace culminating in the 2nd Coming of Christ.

2. “...even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”

a. [even] as many as [Strong: 3745 hósos, hos'-os; by reduplication from G3739; as (much, great, long, etc.) as:—all (that), as (long, many, much) (as), how great (many, much), (in-)asmuch as, so many as, that (ever), the more, those things, what (great, -soever), wheresoever, wherewithsoever, which, × while, who(-soever).] [The KJV translates Strong's G3745 in the following manner: as many as (24x), whatsoever (9x), that (9x), whatsoever things (8x), whatsoever (with G302 7 as long as) (5x), how great things (5x), what (4x), miscellaneous (37x).]

b. [the] Lord [Strong: 2962 kýrios, koo'-ree-os; from κῦρος kŷros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):—God, Lord, master, Sir.] [The KJV translates Strong's G2962 in the following manner: Lord (667x), lord (54x), master (11x), sir (6x), Sir (6x), miscellaneous (4x).]

c. our [Strong: 2257 hēmōn, hay-mone'; genitive case plural of G1473; of (or from) us:—our (company), us, we.] [The KJV translates Strong's G2257 in the following manner: our (313x), us (82x), we (12x), not translated (1x), miscellaneous (2x).]

d. God [Strong: 2316 theós, theh'-os; of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with G3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:—X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).] [The KJV translates Strong's G2316 in the following manner: God (1,320x), god (13x), godly (3x), God-ward (with G4214) (2x), miscellaneous (5x).]

e. shall [Strong: 302 an an a primary particle, denoting a supposition, wish, possibility or uncertainty:--(what-, where-, wither-, who-)soever. Usually unexpressed except by the subjunctive or potential mood.] [Thayer: a conditional particle expressing possibility, based on a preexisting condition (stipulation, prerequisite). This adds an important theoretical (hypothetical) sense to a statement which narrows down the sense of that statement.]

f. call [Strong: 4341 proskaléomai, pros-kal-eh'-om-ahee; middle voice from G4314and G2564; to call toward oneself, i.e. summon, invite:—call (for, to, unto).] [The KJV translates Strong's G4341 in the following manner: call unto (20x), call (7x), call for (2x), call to (1x).]

1). The baptism in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking with other tongues is for all who the Lord calls. From the day of Pentecost to the return of Christ.
