Psalm 102:25

Psalm 102:25

a. I believe the most powerful aspect of these verses, Psalm 102:25-27, beginning with this verse, Psalm 102:25, is the fact it is a dialogue between two persons of the Godhead. For a thousand years until the time of the Messiah Jewish leaders did not know this, and most rejected Him when he came, but thanks to the Holy Ghost who inspired the writer of the book of Hebrews (presumably Paul), we have insight directed by God Himself into this passage. The three verses of Psalm 102:25-27 are quoted in Hebrews 1:10-12, which in itself is a partial passage within Hebrews 1 describing a dialogue between two Persons of the Godhead. The complete dialogue between the two Persons, the Father and the Son comprise Hebrews 1:8-12. The complete dialogue also includes Psalm 45:6, 7 and all the verses from both sections of Psalms in light of the Hebrews passage will be studied and posted eventually. Here, in Psalm 102:25-27 we focus on what according to the Hebrews passage is a continuation of what God the Father said to his Son, who also is God.

Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.

a. NLT: Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands.

b. NIV: In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

c. Amplified Bible: At the beginning You existed and laid the foundations of the earth; the heavens are the work of Your hands.

d. Young’s Literal Translation: Beforetime the earth Thou didst found, And the work of Thy hands are the heavens.

e. Septuagint: In the beginning thou, O Lord, didst lay the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands.

f. Stone Edition Torah/Writings/Prophets [Psalm 102:26]: Of old, You laid the earth’s foundation, and the heavens are Your handiwork.

1. “Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth…”

a. of old [6440 * paniym][Strong: plural (but always as singular) of an unused noun (paneh {paw-neh'}; from 6437); the face (as the part that turns); used in a great variety of applications (literally and figuratively); also (with prepositional prefix) as a preposition (before, etc.):--+ accept, a-(be- )fore(-time), against, anger, X as (long as), at, + battle, + because (of), + beseech, countenance, edge, + employ, endure, + enquire, face, favour, fear of, for, forefront(-part), form(-er time, -ward), from, front, heaviness, X him(-self), + honourable, + impudent, + in, it, look(-eth) (- s), X me, + meet, X more than, mouth, of, off, (of) old (time), X on, open, + out of, over against, the partial, person, + please, presence, propect, was purposed, by reason of, + regard, right forth, + serve, X shewbread, sight, state, straight, + street, X thee, X them(-selves), through (+ - out), till, time(-s) past, (un-)to(-ward), + upon, upside (+ down), with(- in, + -stand), X ye, X you.][AMG, Complete Old Testament Word Study Dictionary: “…With various prepositions paniym takes on the nature of a particle and expresses such concepts a upon, before a place, before a time, and in the presence of.”][Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Lexicon: face, face, faces, presence, person, face (of seraphim or cherubim), face (of animals), face, surface (of ground), as adv of loc/temp, before and behind, toward, in front of, forward, formerly, from beforetime, before, with preposition, in front of, before, to the front of, in the presence of, in the face of, at the face or front of, from the presence of, from before, from before the face of.]

b. laid the foundation [3245 * yacad][Strong: a primitive root; to set (literally or figuratively); intensively, to found; reflexively, to sit down together, i.e. settle, consult:--appoint, take counsel, establish, (lay the, lay for a) found(-ation), instruct, lay, ordain, set, X sure.][ Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Lexicon to found, fix, establish, lay foundation,  to found, establish, begin, to fix or seat themselves close together, sit in conclave, to be founded, to found, to establish, appoint, ordain, to be founded, be laid, to be founded.]

c. earth [776 * ‘erets][Strong: from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; the earth (at large, or partitively a land):--X common, country, earth, field, ground, land, X natins, way, + wilderness, world.]

d. In Psalm 102:25 these inspired words were directed by the writer toward the Most High God, the previous verse establishes this fact.

1). Psalm 102:24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations.

e. But looking at them in the Hebrews 1:8-12 context, the verses, Psalm 45:6, 7 and Psalm 102:25-27 are spoken by the LORD God (the Father), to the LORD God (the Son).

1). Hebrews 1:8-12  But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
1:10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
1:11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;
1:12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

2). This is truly astounding. These dialogues are not frequent in the Word, offhand I can only think of three and all of them are in Psalms. There are probably more but my limited thinking can only quickly think of three.

f. In light of this revelation it would be profitable for us to look at another passage from Job. In the book of Job when God was reading Job a riot act he asked Job where was he when he did lay the foundations of the earth?

1). Job 38:1-4 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
38:2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
38:3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
38:4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

2). In light of these passages we can for sure say these words from Job were spoken by the pre-incarnate Christ Jesus, for as Psalm 102:25 and Hebrews 1:8-10 declare, it was the Second Person of the Godhead who laid the foundation of the earth. Indeed, further revelation from the New Testament confirms that the LORD God, the second Person of the Godhead, the pre-incarnate Christ Jesus created everything.

a). Colossians 1:12-17  Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

2. “…and the heavens are the work of thy hands.”

a. heavens [8064 * shamayim][Strong: dual of an unused singular shameh {shaw-meh'}; from an unused root meaning to be lofty; the sky (as aloft; the dual perhaps alluding to the visible arch in which the clouds move, as well as to the higher ether where the celestial bodies revolve):--air, X astrologer, heaven(-s).]

b. work [4639 * ma’aseh][Strong: from 6213; an action (good or bad); generally, a transaction; abstractly, activity; by implication, a product (specifically, a poem) or (generally) property:--act, art, + bakemeat, business, deed, do(-ing), labor, thing made, ware of making, occupation, thing offered, operation, possession, X well, ((handy-, needle-, net-))work(ing, - manship), wrought.]

c. hands [3027 * yad][Strong: a primitive word; a hand (the open one (indicating power, means, direction, etc.), in distinction from 3709, the closed one); used (as noun, adverb, etc.) in a great variety of applications, both literally and figuratively, both proximate and remote (as follows):--(+ be) able, X about, + armholes, at, axletree, because of, beside, border, X bounty, + broad, (broken-)handed, X by, charge, coast, + consecrate, + creditor, custody, debt, dominion, X enough, + fellowship, force, X from, hand(-staves, -y work), X he, himself, X in, labour, + large, ledge, (left-)handed, means, X mine, ministry, near, X of, X order, ordinance, X our, parts, pain, power, X presumptuously, service, side, sore, state, stay, draw with strength, stroke, + swear, terror, X thee, X by them, X themselves, X thine own, X thou, through, X throwing, + thumb, times, X to, X under, X us, X wait on, (way-)side, where, + wide, X with (him, me, you), work, + yield, X yourselves.]

d. In light of the inspired truth that all of creation are the work of the pre-incarnate Christ Jesus, there is a wonderful passage in Isaiah 40 that gives inspired divine comments on the creation of the heavens and the earth.

1). Isaiah 4:12, 13 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him?

2). The Universe is so vast we can’t measure its greatest extent nor the amount of stars it holds, but man with his instruments and mathematics uses the light year to speculate the scope of the universe. The formula for the light year is this: light travels at 186,000 miles per second (that is 7+ times around the earth in one second), at that speed compute the distant light would travel in a year and you have 1 light year. Man uses the light year to measure the distances in the Universe, while God uses his hands!

e. The Scripture says in Proverbs 3:19 that “by understanding hath he established the heavens”. The Hebrew word for “understanding” is “tabuwn”, the Strongs number is 8394 and according to Wilhelm Gesenius’ Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon to the Old testament, it means “understanding, intelligence, intelligence, understanding, insight.” In other words God did not just throw the stars and galaxies up into the universe, but by intelligence and insight placed them in the heavens where they should be. Getting back to the inspired citation in Hebrews we can say with confidence this person is the Lord Jesus Christ before his incarnation, who the God of the universe addressed as God. Hallelujah!
