Mark 3:31

Mark 3:31

There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.

1. “There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without…”

a. His family including his mother and his brothers came to where he was. It does not say anything about Joseph or his sisters. Joseph probably had already died and why his sisters were not mentioned is unknown. They had come because they were going to attempt to physically and forcibly remove him from the house. His family had just heard that Jesus was appointing apostles to go out and preach, heal the sick and cast out devils.

1). Mark 3:13-21  And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.
And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
 And Simon he surnamed Peter;
 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:
And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,
And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an house.
And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.

b. Add to the drama that the educated religious leaders of the day said he was possessed by the devil.

1). Mark 3:22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.

2. “…and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.”

a. calling [5455 * phoneo][Thayer: to sound, emit a sound, to speak, of a cock: to crow, of men: to cry, cry out, cry aloud, speak with a loud voice, to call, to call one's self, either by one's own voice or though another…]

b. The multitude was so large they could not get to Jesus, they couldn’t even get in the house so they stood outside calling to him and telling others to tell him they were outside.
