Job 32:8

Job 32:8

But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

a. NLT: But there is a spirit within people, the breath of the Almighty within them,
that makes them intelligent.

b. NIV: But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding.

c. YLT: Surely a spirit is in man, And the breath of the Mighty One Doth cause them to understand.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: But there is [a vital force] a spirit [of intelligence] in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives men understanding.

e. Septuagint: but there is a spirit in mortals; and the inspiration of the Almighty is hat which teaches.

f. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: But [in truth,] it is a spirit in man, and it is the soul from the Almighty that gives them understanding.

1. “But there is a spirit in man…”

a. But [Strong: 403 'aken aw-kane' from 3559 (Compare 3651); firmly; figuratively, surely; also (advers.) but:--but, certainly, nevertheless, surely, truly, verily.]

b. [there is] a spirit [Strong: 7307 ruwach roo'-akh from 7306; wind; by resemblance breath, i.e. a sensible (or even violent) exhalation; figuratively, life, anger, unsubstantiality; by extension, a region of the sky; by resemblance spirit, but only of a rational being (including its expression and functions):--air, anger, blast, breath, X cool, courage, mind, X quarter, X side, spirit((-ual)), tempest, X vain, ((whirl-))wind(-y).]

c. in man [Strong: 582 'enowsh en-oshe' from 605; properly, a mortal (and thus differing from the more dignified 120); hence, a man in general (singly or collectively):--another, X (blood-)thirsty, certain, chap(-man); divers, fellow, X in the flower of their age, husband, (certain, mortal) man, people, person, servant, some ( X of them), + stranger, those, + their trade. It is often unexpressed in the English versions, especially when used in apposition with another word.]

1). Man is a three part being, he is a spirit, he has a soul and he lives in a body.

a). 1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

b). The heart is the spirit of man: this is a general rule in Scripture, it is not absolute.

(1) Romans 2:29 “…circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit…”

c). Paul used the terms “I” and “my spirit” interchangeably: The spirit is the real me.

(1) 1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

d). The soul of man is his mind, his will and emotions. A man’s will is part of his soul because he can lose that part of his soul. When a person goes to hell, they lose their soul, the power to choose.

(1) Matthew 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

(2) But they don’t lose all of their soul because a man’s memories and the ability to think are also part of his soul and the rich man who ended up in hell still had these capabilities.

(a) Luke 16:27-31 Then he[the rich man] said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

e). Lastly, our body is the house we live in.

(1) 2 Corinthians 5:1-3 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
5:2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
5:3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.

2. “…and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.”

a. [and the] inspiration [Strong: 5397 nshamah nesh-aw-maw'; wind, angry or vital breath, divine inspiration, intellect. or (concretely) an animal:--blast, (that) breath(-eth), inspiration, soul, spirit.]

b. of the Almighty [Strong: 7706 Shadday shad-dah'-ee from 7703;  the Almighty:--Almighty.]

c. giveth them understanding [Strong: 995 biyn bene a primitive root; to separate mentally (or distinguish), i.e.(generally) understand:--attend, consider, be cunning, diligently, direct, discern, eloquent, feel, inform, instruct, have intelligence, know, look well to, mark, perceive, be prudent, regard, (can) skill(-full), teach, think, (cause, make to, get, give, have) understand(-ing), view, (deal) wise(-ly, man).]

1). When a man receives understanding and revelation from God, that inspiration will occur in his spirit

a). Ephesians 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

2). When Paul prayed for a revelation be given to the church, that revelation, that understanding and illumination would occur in our spirits.

a). Ephesians 1:15-23 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
1:16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
1:19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
1:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
1:23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
