And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

1). Some scholars teach that not all eunuchs were castrated, but only those who were in charge of the harems. Whether or not this individual was castrated is unknown.

1). The fact he was from Ethiopia ties him geographically to the ancient kingdom of Sheba and as we shall see also tied to Solomon. There is genetic evidence and other historical evidence that does so.  


2. “…who had the charge of all her treasure and had come to Jerusalem for to worship.”


a. who [Strong: 3739. hos hos, including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

k. Jerusalem  [Strong: 2419. Hierousalem hee-er-oo-sal-ame' of Hebrew origin (3389); Hierusalem (i.e. Jerushalem), the capitol of Palestine:--Jerusalem.]


l. [for to] worship [Strong: 4352. proskuneo pros-koo-neh'-o from 4314 and a probable derivative of 2965 (meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master's hand); to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (literally or figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore):--worship.]


1). The reason we have an Ethiopian coming to Jerusalem to worship is because of the godly effect that King Solomon had on the Queen of Sheba. We find that account in 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles. For space sake I will post the 1 Kings passage.


1). 1 Kings 10:1-13 And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions.

10:2 And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.

10:3 And Solomon told her all her questions: there was not any thing hid from the king, which he told her not.

10:4 And when the queen of Sheba had seen all Solomon's wisdom, and the house that he had built,

10:5 And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel, and his cupbearers, and his ascent by which he went up unto the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her.

10:6 And she said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in mine own land of thy acts and of thy wisdom.

10:7 Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard.

10:8 Happy are thy men, happy are these thy servants, which stand continually before thee, and that hear thy wisdom.

10:9 Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel: because the LORD loved Israel for ever, therefore made he thee king, to do judgment and justice.

10:10 And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.

10:11 And the navy also of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir great plenty of almug trees, and precious stones.

10:12 And the king made of the almug trees pillars for the house of the Lord, and for the king's house, harps also and psalteries for singers: there came no such almug trees, nor were seen unto this day.

10:13 And king Solomon gave unto the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.


2). Even though the text in 1 Kings does not say it, the Queen of Sheba became a Jewish proselyte. Jesus, in the book of Matthew says some very high things about her.


a). Matthew 12:42 The queen of the south shall rise up in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.


b). Given the fact that only saints will judge the world(1 Corinthians 6:2), this famous queen is in heaven. Not only that but because of her influence for 2 thousand years there has been a large Jewish group within Ethiopia’s borders.


c). The Ethiopian eunuch, being a Jewish proselyte was on his way back to Ethiopia from worshipping in Jerusalem.


3). In light of these facts I must mention an interesting link to a prophetic line in a Psalm written by King David. Solomon was of course David’s son and it was during Solomon’s reign that the initial spiritual push of Judaism into Ethiopia occurred from the encounter between Judaism and the Queen of Sheba. Remember the Queen had traveled to Jerusalem to see his wealth and hear his wisdom. This puts an interesting light upon a passage David wrote in Psalm 68.


a). Psalm 68:29-31 Because of thy temple at Jerusalem shall kings bring presents unto thee.

68:30 Rebuke the company of spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the calves of the people, till every one submit himself with pieces of silver: scatter thou the people that delight in war.

68:31 Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.


b). I personally believe that this passage has a double prophetic meaning, in that David was prophesying of Ethiopia’s embracing Judaism during Solomon’s time, but also Christianity in the church age.
