Genesis 18:21

Genesis 18:21

I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

a. NLT: I am going down to see if their actions are as wicked as I have heard. If not, I want to know.”

e. according to the cry [6818 * tsaaqah] [Strongs: a shriek or cry (ing). [AMG: It describes a call for help, a cry of wailing and despair.]

1). When the LORD sent these angels on their fact finding mission it was to determine if the they were worthy of destruction. It is obvious the homosexual behavior of the city that the angels witnessed confirmed “the cry”. Granted, homosexuality was not the only sin that Sodom and Gomorrah and the other cities of the plain were guilty of, but there is enough Scripture in the Bible to come to the doctrinally sound conclusion that the homosexual behavior of these cities was the main reason God decided to destroy them.

a). Genesis 18:20, 21 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous, I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

2). According to Blue Letter Bible this Hebrew word is used 21 times in the Old Testament. In most of those instances it is used as “a cry” or “an outcry”. There is also an example of crying out against something and that is found in Nehemiah.

a). Nehemiah 5:1 And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

3). This has to be the meaning of the word here. The cry of Sodom was an outcry of rebellion against the Lord. In the book of Isaiah we get a closer look at the cry.

a). Isaiah 3:9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.

b).  The Hebrew word translated “declare” is “nagad”, the Strong’s number is 5046 and it means,  to front, i.e. stand boldly out opposite; by implication (causatively), to manifest; figuratively, to announce (always by word of mouth to one present); specifically, to expose, predict, explain, praise:--bewray, X certainly, certify, declare(-ing), denounce, expound, X fully, messenger, plainly, profess, rehearse, report, shew (forth), speak, X surely, tell, utter. Remember that the context is sin so the various definitions fit right in with the NIV use of the word “parade”. To boldly stand out (in their sin) of homosexuality, to announce (their sin) of homosexuality by word of mouth, to proclaim (their sin) of homosexuality, to celebrate (their sin) of homosexuality with praise”, are all very revealing. This was the outcry of Sodom against God.

2. “…which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.”

For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

a. NLT: I have singled him out so that he will direct his sons and their families to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just. Then I will do for Abraham all that I have promised.”

b. NIV: For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”

Romans 3:2

Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.

a. NLT: Yes, there are great benefits! First of all, the Jews were entrusted with the whole revelation of God.

b. NIV: Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God.

c. Amplified Bible:  Much in every way. To begin with, to the Jews were entrusted the oracles (the brief communications, the intentions, the utterances) of God.

1. “Much every way…”

1). The Scripture goes on to say clearly the Jew is no better than the Gentile, that all are under sin and all need the Savior.

2). But it is also clear that the Jew has an advantage, whether you like it or not. Much advantage, much excellence, much preeminence, much increase and much profit, that is what the Jew has, mainly because unto the Jewish people through the Old Covenant the Scriptures were given. There are a number of Old Covenant promises and blessings that were given to the Jewish people that they are experiencing today and the world has been blessed by them because of it. For instance the world has been blessed by the Jewish people in fields of science and literature in amount of .Jewish Nobel Prize Winners: 165 Jewish Nobel Prize winners, since 1901. Folks that’s 24 % of the total amount of winners, no other ethnic group comes close; (2/2006 Edition of Jewish Magazine.) That my friend is a divine advantage, Glory to God!

1). The Jews were given the law, the covenants, the promises.

a). Romans 9:3-5  For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:
9:4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
9:5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

b). Psalm 147:19, 20 He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel.
147:20 He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the LORD.

2). The Levites were to be the guardians of the Law:

a). Deuteronomy 31:24-26 And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished,
31:25 That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying,
31:26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

3). They were probably also were responsible to make copies of the Scriptures just like the King.

a). Deuteronomy 17:18, 19 And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites:
17:19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:

4). God’s word promised the faithful Jew, that those who sought out the wisdom of His word would find wonderful discoveries. Surely the above lists of Nobel Prize winners fits into that category.

a). Proverbs 8:12  I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.

5). In light of all this the promises of God toward Israel, Jerusalem, and the Jew during the 1000 year reign of Christ and the perfect age are very powerful. Just this one passage is full of the favor of God toward Israel.

a). Isaiah 60:9-22 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the Lord thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee.
60:10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee.
60:11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.
60:12 For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.
60:13 The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious.
60:14 The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee; The city of the Lord, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
60:15 Whereas thou has been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.
60:16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.
60:17 For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness.
60:18 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.
60:19 The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.
60:20 Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.
60:21 Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.
60:22 A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the Lord will hasten it in his time.

6). Yes, the Jew will be the top ethnic group on the face of the earth after Christ comes back, and that will be for all of eternity. But don’t lose heart, you can be grafted into the Jewish nation, by getting born again, and accepting what was accomplished by Christ in his death and resurrection. The following passages establishes that particular Covenant truth.    

a). Romans 2:28, 29 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

b). Romans 11:13-18 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:
11:14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.
11:15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
11:16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
11:17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
11:18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

c). Ephesians 2:11-19 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
2:12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Isaiah 53:2

Isaiah 53:2
For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

a. 1). These terms are agricultural and Messianic, in that they speak of Jesus.
a). Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
b). Jeremiah 23:5, 6 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
23:6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
c). Isaiah 4:2 In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

1). AMG, The Complete Word Study of the Old Testament: “A noun meaning glory, splendor, majesty. It describes the impressive character of God in 1 Chronicles 16:27 and His thunderous voice in Psalms 29:4. Isaiah describes sinners fleeing from the [majesty of the LORD]“hadar” in Isaiah 2:10, 19….In Isaiah’s prophetic description of the Suffering Servant, he uses “hadar” to say that the Servant will have no splendor to attract people to Him (Isaiah 53:2).”
2). In Philippians 2:7 it is seen that when God became man in Christ Jesus, he laid aside all his Godlike characteristics and took the form of a servant. He laid aside his omnipotence, omnipresence, his omniscience, and the glory and majesty of the Godhead. When he healed the sick and cast out devils, he did so as a man filled with the Holy Ghost, not as God. See Notes on Philippians 2:7.

1). I believe that this verse is also saying that Jesus was and is not the handsome, good looking individual that some believe.  His attraction is the compassion, mercy and grace and inspiration that he demonstrated in His life.

Isaiah 52:13

Isaiah 52:13

Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and very high.

1. “Behold, my servant shall deal prudently…”

a. Behold [Strong: 2009 hinneh hin-nay' prolongation for 2005; lo!:--behold, lo, see.]

b. [my] servant [Strong: 5650 `ebed eh'-bed from 5647; a servant:--X bondage, bondman, (bond-)servant, (man-)servant.]

1). Contemporary Judaism teaches that the servant is the people or the nation of Israel.

a). Commentary on Isaiah 52:13 in Stone Edition: The Torah/Prophets/Writings: “God’s servant is the people of Israel (Rashi).

b). Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Itzchaki, 1040-1105) and some of the later rabbis, though, interpreted the passage as referring to Israel. They knew that the older interpretations referred it to Messiah. However, Rashi lived at a time when a degenerate medieval distortion of Christianity was practiced. He wanted to preserve the Jewish people from accepting such a faith and, although his intentions were sincere, other prominent Jewish rabbis and leaders realized the inconsistencies of Rashi’s interpretation. They presented a threefold objection to his innovation. First, they showed the consensus of ancient opinion. Secondly, they pointed out that the text is in the singular. Thirdly, they noted verse eight. This verse presented an insurmountable difficulty to those who interpreted this passage as referring to Israel. It reads: He was taken away from rule and from judgment; and his life who shall recount? for he was cut off out of the land of the living; through the transgressions of my people was he stricken. Were the Jewish people, God forbid, ever cut off out of the land of the living? No! In Jeremiah 31:35-37, God promised that we will exist forever. We are proud that Am Yisrael Chai—”The people of Israel are much alive.” Likewise, it is impossible to say that Israel suffered for the transgressions of “my people,” which clearly means Isaiah’s people. Surely Isaiah’s people are not the Gentiles, but the Jews. Moshe Kohen, a 15th-century rabbi in Spain, explains the section: This passage, the commentators explain, speaks of the captivity of Israel, although the singular number is used in it throughout. Others have supposed it to mean the just in this present world, who are crushed and oppressed now…but these too, for the same reason, by altering the number, distort the verses from their natural meaning. And then it seemed to me that…having forsaken the knowledge of our Teachers, and inclined “after the stubbornness of their own hearts,” and of their own opinion, I am pleased to interpret it, in accordance with the teaching of our Rabbis, of the King Messiah.

2). Earlier Judaism taught it was the Messiah. The following information was received of of the website, Jews for Jesus.

a). Rabbi Jonathan ben Uzziel, a disciple of Hillel who lived early in the second century C.E., begins with the simple and worthy words: Behold my servant Messiah shall prosper; he shall be high, and increase, and be exceeding strong: as the house of Israel looked to him through many days, because their countenance was darkened among the peoples, and their complexion beyond the sons of men. b). c). For the same reason, Rabbi Moshe Alsheikh, Rabbi of Safed, late 16th century, points out this fact saying: I may remark, then, that our Rabbis with one voice accept and affirm the opinion that the prophet is speaking of the King Messiah.

c. [shall deal] prudently [Strong: 7919 sakal saw-kal'; a primitive root; to be (causatively, make or act) circumspect and hence, intelligent:--consider, expert, instruct, prosper, (deal) prudent(-ly), (give) skill(-ful), have good success, teach, (have, make to) understand(-ing), wisdom, (be, behave self, consider, make) wise(- ly), guide wittingly.]

1). The same Hebrew word used for “prudently” in Isaiah 52:13 is the same Hebrew word used for “prosper” in Joshua and 1 Kings.

a). Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

b). 1 Kings 2:2, 3 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;
2:3 And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

2). These promises on meditation are for any believer, who acts in obedience to them, but this particular verse in Isaiah is of course speaking of Christ, and so we can make a logical deduction that Christ was a meditator of God’s word. When Jesus walked on the earth he was very wise and prudent and prosperous because he meditated and walked in obedience to the word of God. There is abundance evidence of this in the Psalms and the Gospels. In the passages below I want to look at another reason for Jesus acting “prudently” Passages that show that when Jesus was in the earth, he did not operate as God, but as a man filled with the Holy Ghost. Jesus walked “prudently” because he was led by the Holy Ghost. All of the passages are in Isaiah.

a). Isaiah 61:1, 2a “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
61:2a To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,…”

(1) The fulfillment of this is of course Luke 4. This is no doubt the clearest example of Jesus ministering in the gifts of the Spirit during His ministry.

(2) Luke 4:16-21 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
4:17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
4:19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
4:20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
4:21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

b). Isaiah 11:1-5 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
11:3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lip shall he slay the wicked.
11:5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

(1) This passage includes not only his life on earth before his death and resurrection but also his reign as King after he returns. This is a reference of how Jesus operated in the earth in the gifts of the Spirit, as a man filled with the Holy Ghost

c). Isaiah 42:1-4 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: and he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
42:2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
42:3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
42:4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

(1) The fulfillment of this is in Matthew.

(2) Matthew 12:14-21 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.
12:15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;
12:16 And charged them that they should not make him known:
12:17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
12:18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
12:19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
12:20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
12:21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

a. he shall be exalted [Strong: 7311 ruwm room; a primitive root; to be high actively, to rise or raise (in various applications, literally or figuratively):--bring up, exalt (self), extol, give, go up, haughty, heave (up), (be, lift up on, make on, set up on, too) high(-er, one), hold up, levy, lift(-er) up, (be) lofty, (X a-)loud, mount up, offer (up), + presumptuously, (be) promote(-ion), proud, set up, tall(-er), take (away, off, up), breed worms.]

b. [and] extolled [Strong: 5375 nasa' naw-saw'; a primitive root; to lift, in a great variety of applications, literal and figurative, absol. and rel. c. very [Strong: 3966 m`od meh-ode'; from the same as 181; properly, vehemence, i.e. (with or without preposition) vehemently; by implication, wholly, speedily, etc. (often with other words as an intensive or superlative; especially when repeated):--diligently, especially, exceeding(-ly), far, fast, good, great(-ly), X louder and louder, might(-ily, -y), (so) much, quickly, (so) sore, utterly, very (+ much, sore), well.]

d. high [Strong: 1361 gabahh gaw-bah'; a primitive root; to soar, i.e. be lofty; figuratively, to be haughty:--exalt, be haughty, be (make) high(-er), lift up, mount up, be proud, raise up great height, upward.]

1). The exaltation of Christ because of his obedience is clearly mentioned in the next chapter in Isaiah.

a). Isaiah 53:12  Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

2). This of course matches perfectly what is said in Philippians.

a). Philippians 2:8-11 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name above every name;
2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.


Isaiah 53:1

Isaiah 53:1

Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

a. This verse is quoted twice in the New Testament. It is partially quoted in Romans 10:16, and quoted fully in John 12:38. Both give us sound Hebrew commentary.

1. “Who hath believed our report…”

a. Who [Strong: 4310 miy me an interrogative pronoun of persons, as 4100 is of things, who? (occasionally, by a peculiar idiom, of things); also (indefinitely) whoever; often used in oblique construction with prefix or suffix:--any (man), X he, X him, + O that! what, which, who(-m, -se, -soever), + would to God.]

b. hath believed [Strong: 539 'aman aw-man'; a primitive root; properly, to build up or support; to foster as a parent or nurse; figuratively to render (or be) firm or faithful, to trust or believe, to be permanent or quiet; morally to be true or certain; once (Isa. 30:21; interchangeable 541) to go to the right hand:--hence, assurance, believe, bring up, establish, + fail, be faithful (of long continuance, stedfast, sure, surely, trusty, verified), nurse, (-ing father), (put), trust, turn to the right.] [Gesenius: to prop, to sustain, to support; to bear in the arms, be founded, firm, to be faithful, trustworthy.]

c. our report [Strong: 8052 shmuw`ah sehm-oo-aw'; feminine passive participle of 8074; something heard, i.e. an announcement:--bruit, doctrine, fame, mentioned, news, report, rumor, tidings.]

1). The Apostle Paul quotes this verse in Romans, thus beginning with other New Testament passages giving us a New Covenant perspective on faith, echoing and enlarging on the Old Covenant.

a). Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

b). obeyed [Strong: 5219  hupakouo hoop-ak-oo'-o from 5259 and 191; to hear under (as a subordinate), i.e. to listen attentively; by implication, to heed or conform to a command or authority:--hearken, be obedient to, obey.]

2). Obedience grows out of believing! This is confirmed by another witness in James.

a). James 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew you my faith by my works.

3). If we truly believe, we will obey. The reason people do not obey is because they do not believe, no matter how strongly they declare their belief. There are two passages in Romans that bolsters the statement that faith is followed by obedience.

a). Romans 1:5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:

a). Romans 16:25, 26 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
16:26  But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

4). Faith demands obedience!

2. “Who hath believed our report?And to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?”

a. [And to whom is the] arm [Strong: 2220 zrowa` zer-o'-ah or (shortened) zroao {zer-o'-ah}; and (feminine) zrowpah {zer-o-aw'}; or zrowah {zer-o-aw'}; from 2232; the arm (as stretched out), or (of animals) the foreleg; figuratively, force:--arm, + help, mighty, power, shoulder, strength.]

b. [of the] LORD [Strong: 3068 Yhovah yeh-ho-vaw' from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.

c. revealed [Strong: 1540 galah gaw-law' a primitive root; to denude (especially in a disgraceful sense); by implication, to exile (captives being usually stripped); figuratively, to reveal:--+ advertise, appear, bewray, bring, (carry, lead, go) captive (into captivity), depart, disclose, discover, exile, be gone, open, X plainly, publish, remove, reveal, X shamelessly, shew, X surely, tell, uncover.] [AMG: to reveal. In 1 Samuel it is translated “told”; in Numbers 24:4 it is translated “open”.]

1). In the gospel of John we get an explanation of the meaning of this verse.

a). John 12:37, 38 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him.
12:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

2). As the next verses in John reveal, there was a reason why they did not believe.

a). John 12:39, 40 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

3). John links Isaiah 53:1 with Isaiah 6:10. The implication is that God is the one blinding their eyes and hardening their heart.

a). Isaiah 6:10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears, heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

b). In the Hebrew translation the Hebrew scholars placed the responsibility on the people.

c). Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: Isaiah 6:10 This people is fattening, hardening its ears, and sealing its eyes, lest it see with its eyes, hear with it ears and understand with its heart, so that it will repent and be healed.

4). God will never violate a person’s free will, even to the point of allowing them to go to hell. In Matthew’s gospel he quotes Jesus referring to Isaiah 6:10, but Jesus says it differently.

a). Matthew 13:14, 15 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

5). Scripture is clear about who hardens the heart. We harden our own heart through our disobedience to God’s word.

a). Hebrews 3:12, 13 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you and evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

6). The closest we could get to placing responsibility upon God is God is the Creator and the Administrator of this Universe and as such He created the law of sowing and reaping. That is as close as it gets. God has created this process and though human free will chooses a path to sin and destruction and reaping what they have sowed. I discovered  the Hebrew translators correctly placed the responsibility on the people. Looking at the Jewish translation and the Septuagint which is also a Jewish translation from Hebrew into the Greek, the blame for the condition of the people is squarely on them individually not on God.

3. “...and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?”

1). The term “the arm of the LORD” is used figuratively to denote the mighty power and work of God. This is clearly established in John 12:37, 38 [above]. It is used more than a few times in the Old Covenant. The following verse is prophetic not only of the Millennial reign but also of what God did through the preaching of the gospel throughout the earth.

a). Isaiah 52:10 The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

2). If you look up this term in a Concordance you will find that this phrase is only used three times in the New Testament in this sense. Luke 1:51; Acts 13:17 In Luke 1:51 Mary is referring to the fulfillment of prophecy regarding the birth of the Messiah. In Acts 13:17 Paul is referring to Israel’s deliverance from Egypt and in John 12:38 describing Jesus working miracles [above].  I began to wonder why there was so few references in the New Testament compared to the Old and realized that if we are the body of Christ, then we are the extension of the arm of the Lord.

a). Ephesians 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

3). If we are the “members of his body” then we are his arm. The mighty works of God are to be done in the earth through us, his body on the earth.

a). Mark 16:15-20 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
16:19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

b). John 14:12, 13 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works  than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
