1 Peter 2:9



1 Peter 2:9

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

a. NLT: But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

b. NIV: But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

c. YLT: And ye are a choice race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people acquired, that the excellences ye may shew forth of Him who out of darkness did call you to His wondrous light;

d. Amplified Bible Classic:  But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God’s] own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

e. Worrell Translation: But ye are “an elect race, a kingly priesthood, a holy nation,” a people for a possession, that ye may show forth the excellencies of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

f. Wuest Translation: But as for you, you are a race chosen out, kings-priests, a set-apart nation, a people formed for [God’s own] possession, in order that you might proclaim abroad the excellencies of the One who out of darkness called you into participation in His marvelous light.

1. “But ye are a chosen generation…”

2. “…a royal priesthood, an holy nation,

a. a royal [Strong: 934 basileios bas-il'-i-os from 935; kingly (in nature):--royal.]

b. priesthood [Strong: 2406 hierateuma hee-er-at'-yoo-mah from 2407; the priestly fraternity, i.e. sacerdotal order (figuratively):--priesthood.]

1). This was the original desire of God for Israel after they came out of the land of Egypt.

a). Exodua 19:6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

2). Every born again man, woman, and child in the body of Christ is a priest unto God.

a). 1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

b). Revelation 1:4-6 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;
1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

c. an holy [Strong: 40 hagios hag'-ee-os from hagos (an awful thing) (compare 53, 2282); sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):--(most) holy (one, thing), saint.]

d. nation [Strong: 1484 ethnos eth'-nos probably from 1486; a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe; specially, a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually, by implication, pagan):--Gentile, heathen, nation, people.]

3. “…a peculiar people…”

a. k. people [Strong: 2992 laos lah-os' apparently a primary word; a people (in general; thus differing from 1218, which denotes one's own populace):--people.]

4. “…that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”

a. that [Strong: 3704 hopos hop'-oce from 3739 and 4459; what(-ever) how, i.e. in the manner that (as adverb or conjunction of coincidence, intentional or actual):--because, how, (so) that, to, when.]

b. [ye should] shew forth [Strong: 1804 exaggello ex-ang-el'-lo from 1537 and the base of 32; to publish, i.e. celebrate:--shew forth.]

c. the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

d. praises [Strong: 703 arete ar-et'-ay from the same as 730; properly, manliness (valor), i.e. excellence (intrinsic or attributed):--praise, virtue.] [Thayer: a word of very wide signification in Greek writings; any excellence of a person (in body or mind) or of a thing, an eminent endowment, property or quality. Used of the human mind and in an ethical sense, it denotes: 1. a virtuous course of thought, feeling and action; virtue, moral goodness (Wis. 4:1 Wis. 5:13; often in 4 Macc. and in Greek writings): 2 Peter 1:5 (others take it here specifically, viz. moral vigor; cf. next entry). 2. Any particular moral excellence, as modesty, purity; hence (plural αἱ ἀρεταί, Wis. 8:7; often in 4 Macc. and in the Greek philosophers) τίς ἀρετή, Philippians 4:8. Used of God, it denotes a. his power: 2 Peter 2:3.]

1). The only way to show forth the excellencies, the moral goodness, the moral excellence of Christ Jesus is to be transformed into his image.

a). Romans 12:1, 2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

b). 2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

c). 1 Kings 2:2, 3 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;
2:3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

2). This is only accomplished by the grace of God because in ourselves we can do nothing.

a). 2 Peter 1:2-8 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
1:5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
1:7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
1:8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 2:16



Romans 2:16

In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

a. NLT: And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life.

b. NIV: This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

c. YLT: in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men, according to my good news, through Jesus Christ.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: On that day when, as my Gospel proclaims, God by Jesus Christ will judge men in regard to the things which they conceal (their hidden thoughts).

e. Worrell Translation: In the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my Gospel, through Jesus Christ.

1. “In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.”

a. 1). Paul knew that the epistles he wrote would forme the basis that Jesus would us as the basis for his judgment. I also believe that before Paul was martyred the Lord reaffirmed to him that all of the Gentile world of every generation after him would herar the gospel through his epistles.

a). 2 Timothy 4:16, 17  At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.
4:17 Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
