Genesis 9:20



Genesis 9:20

And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:

 a. NLT: After the flood, Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard.

b. NIV: Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard.

c. YLT: And Noah remaineth a man of the ground, and planteth a vineyard,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: And Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard.

e. Septuagint: And Noe began to be a husbandman, and he planted a vineyard.

f. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: Noah, the man of the earth, debased himself and planted a vineyard.

1). Jewish tradition says that Noah debased himself because he desire wine so much he  planted a vineyard.

1. “And Noah began to be an husbandman…”

a. [And] Noah [Strong: 5146 Noach no'-akh the same as 5118; rest; Noach, the patriarch of the flood:--Noah.]

b. began [Strong: 2490 chalal khaw-lal' a primitive root (Compare 2470); properly, to bore, i.e. (by implication) to wound, to dissolve; figuratively, to profane (a person, place or thing), to break (one's word), to begin (as if by an "opening wedge"); denom. (from 2485) to play (the flute):--begin (X men began), defile, X break, defile, X eat (as common things), X first, X gather the grape thereof, X take inheritance, pipe, player on instruments, pollute, (cast as) profane (self), prostitute, slay (slain), sorrow, stain, wound.]

c. [to be a] husbandman [Strong: 376 'iysh eesh contracted for 582 (or perhaps rather from an unused root meaning to be extant); a man as an individual or a male person; often used as an adjunct to a more definite term (and in such cases frequently not expressed in translation):--also, another, any (man), a certain, + champion, consent, each, every (one), fellow, (foot-, husband-)man, (good-, great, mighty) man, he, high (degree), him (that is), husband, man(-kind), + none, one, people, person, + steward, what (man) soever, whoso(-ever), worthy.]

d. husbandman [Strong: 127 'adamah ad-aw-maw' from 119; soil (from its general redness):--country, earth, ground, husband(-man) (-ry), land.]

1). Stone Edition, Chumash. Noah is associated with the earth because he was skilled at working it (Ibn Ezra), or because he devoted himself to cultivating the earth, rather than to building cities.

2. “…and he planted a vineyard:”

a. and he planted [Strong: 5193 nata` naw-tah' a primitive root; properly, to strike in, i.e. fix; specifically, to plant (literally or figuratively):--fastened, plant(- er).]

b. a vineyard [Strong: 3754 kerem keh'-rem from an unused root of uncertain meaning; a garden or vineyard:--vines, (increase of the) vineyard(-s), vintage.]

1). This passage is the first mention of drunkenness in the Bible. It results in not only the embarrassment of Noah but also a curse upon Canaan, Ham’s son. What he was guilty of is unclear but there are hints in the wording of the passage.

a). Genesis 9:20-25  And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
9:21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
9:22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.
9:23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness.
9:24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
9:25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

2). All of the levels of advancements mankind had reached prior to the flood were carried over after the flood. They included agricultural, technological and cultural.

a). Genesis 4:2, 3 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.

b). Genesis 4:17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

c). Genesis 4:22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.

d). Genesis 4:20, 21 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
4:21 And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
