2 Timothy 3:8

2 Timothy 3:8

Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

a. NLT: These teachers oppose the truth just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses. They have depraved minds and a counterfeit faith. b. NIV: Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. c. Young’s Literal Translation: And, even as Jannes and Jambres stood against Moses, so also these do stand against the truth, men corrupted in mind, disapproved concerning the faith; [The Young's Literal Translation was translated by Robert Young, who believed in a strictly literal translation of God's word. This version of the Bible is in the public domain.]

d. Amplified Bible:  Now just as Jannes and Jambres were hostile to and resisted Moses, so these men also are hostile to and oppose the Truth. They have depraved and distorted minds, and are reprobate and counterfeit and to be rejected as far as the faith is concerned. 1.”Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses…”

a. [Strong: 3739 hós, hos; probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article G3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:—one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se),]

b. Now [Strong: 1161 dé, deh; a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:—also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

c. as [Strong: 5158 trópos, trop'-os; from the same as G5157; a turn, i.e. (by implication) mode or style (especially with preposition or relative prefix as adverb, like); figuratively, deportment or character:—(even) as, conversation, (+ like) manner, (+ by any) means, way.]

d. Jannes [Strong: 2389 Iannēs, ee-an-nace'; of Egyptian origin; Jannes, an Egyptian:—Jannes.]

e. and [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

f. Jambres [Strong: 2387 Iambrēs, ee-am-brace'; of Egyptian origin; Jambres, an Egyptian:—Jambres.]

g. withstood [Strong: 436 anthístēmi, anth-is'-tay-mee; from G473 and G2476; to stand against, i.e. oppose:—resist, withstand.] [Zodhiates: to stand against, resist, whether in word or deed.]

h. Moses [Strong: 3475 Mōseús, moce-yoos'; of Hebrew origin; (H4872); Moseus, Moses, or Mouses (i.e. Mosheh), the Hebrew lawgiver:—Moses.]

1). D.C. This is where we get the word ‘antihistamine’ used in cold remedies.

2). Jannes and Jambres are the magicians of Egypt who used satanic power to resist Moses. Though these two are not named in Exodus, they are mentioned in Jewish tradition. There are only a few instances of Jewish tradition being placed by God’s direction within the Scripture. Their being named here is one of them. There are also a bunch of other traditions about these men that cannot be accepted.

a). JANNES AND JAMBRES [ISBE]JANNES AND JAMBRES - jan'-ez, jam'-brez (Iannes kai Iambres, 2 Tim 3:8): These are the names of two magicians in ancient Egypt, who withstood Moses before Pharaoh. This is the only place where the names occur in the New Testament, and they are not mentioned in the Old Testament at all. In Ex 7:11,22 Egyptian magicians are spoken of, who were called upon by Pharaoh to oppose Moses and Aaron: "Then Pharaoh also called for the wise men and the sorcerers: and they also, the magicians of Egypt, did in like manner with their enchantments." Jannes and Jambres were evidently two of the persons referred to in this passage. It should be observed that the word translated here "magicians" occurs also in Gen 41:8 in connection with Pharaoh's dreams: Pharaoh "sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof." the Revised Version margin reads for "magicians" "or sacred scribes." The Hebrew word is charTummim, and means sacred scribes who were skilled in the sacred writing, that is in the hieroglyphics; they were a variety of Egyptian priests. Jannes and Jambres were doubtless members of one or other of the various classes spoken of in the passages in Exodus and Genesis, the wise men, the sorcerers, and the magicians or sacred scribes. http://topicalbible.org/j/jannes.htm

3). Exodus 7:8-13 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

7:9 When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent.

7:10 And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.

7:11 Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.

7:12 For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods.

7:13 And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.

4). Exodus 7:19-22 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and stretch out thine hand upon the waters of Egypt, upon their streams, upon their rivers, and upon their ponds, and upon all their pools of water, that they may become blood; and that there may be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood, and in vessels of stone.

7:20 And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.

7:21 And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.

7:22 And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, neither did he hearken unto them; as the LORD had said.

5). Exodus 8:5-7 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch forth thine hand with thy rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt.

8:6 And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt.

8:7 And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt.

6). Exodus 8:16-18 And the LORD said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

8:17 And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

8:18 And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.

7). The giving of the names of these two magicians is an example where a Jewish tradition was included into the inspired cannon of Scripture.

8). Names of two legendary wizards of Pharaoh "who withstood Moses" (II Tim. iii. 8) by imitating "with their enchantments" the works of Moses and Aaron, though they were defeated (Ex. vii. 11, viii. 7). According to rabbinical tradition they were the two chiefs of the magicians at the court of Pharaoh who foretold the birth of Moses, "the destroyer of the land of Egypt," thereby causing the cruel edicts of Pharaoh (Soṭah 11a; Sanh. 106a). They said to Moses when he performed his miracles with the water and the rod: "Dost thou wish to introduce magic into Egypt, the native land of the magic art?" (Men. 85a). http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/8513-jannes-and-jambres

a). Much of the Jewish and other cultural literature concerning these two individuals is completely farfetched and would be rightly classified not worthy of believing, but nevertheless, the basic tradition of their names were included by Paul into the Scripture.

2. “…so do these also resist the truth…”

a. resist [Strong: 436 * anthístēmi, anth-is'-tay-mee; from G473 and G2476; to stand against, i.e. oppose:—resist, withstand.] [Zodhiates: anthistemi; anti-against; histemi-to stand] [Zodhiates: to stand against, resist, whether in word or deed.] [The Greek word for “withstood” in this verse is the same Greek word. See above.]

b. the [Strong: 3588. [tē] ὁ ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: [tē] ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. T.] [Additional variants: tē, hoi, oi, tēn, ta, tēs, tois, tais, tō, tōn, tou, hé, Hē, hē, hai, tas.]

c. truth [Strong 225 * alḗtheia, al-ay'-thi-a; from G227; truth:—true, × truly, truth, verity.] [Zodhiates: Truth, reality; the unveiled reality lying at the basis of and agreeing with an appearance; the manifested, the veritable essence of matter.]

1). Jannes and Jambres used satanic miracles to withstand Moses in Exodus, and Paul writes to Timothy and to us that it will be the same with these false teachers. My personal opinion is the complete fulfillment of this will be during the Tribulation period, but also that a partial fulfillment has and is being fulfilled during the whole period of the “last days”, the church age. I say that in light of the fact there are many examples in the church world today, of so called believers who are resisting the truth of God’s word. The resisting is being done by pretending Christians, those men (and probably women), in the church who have a form of godliness but deny the power of God or godliness. They teach demonic doctrines causing people to be led astray, doctrines that attack the integrity of God’s word and attack the profitability of living a life of godliness, doctrines that attack the truth and reliability of the Gospel. Note for example the use of the Greek word for “withstood” in the Book of Acts.

2). Acts 13:8 “But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.”

3). The word used for the phrase “to turn away” is ‘diastrepho’ (1294), and it means to turn or twist throughout, to distort, pervert.” I am inclined to believe that though the false prophet was a sorcerer, his means of turning away the deputy from the faith was to pervert and twist the gospel message.

2. “…men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.”

a. men [Strong: 444 ánthrōpos, anth'-ro-pos; from G435 and ὤψ ṓps (the countenance; from G3700); man-faced, i.e. a human being:—certain, man.]

1). This is another implication that these individuals will be within the church world (and I use that term loosely); their minds are corrupt, but they are to be rejected concerning the faith.

b. [of] corrupt [Strong: 2704 * kataphtheírō, kat-af-thi'-ro; from G2596 and G5351; to spoil entirely, i.e. (literally) to destroy; or (figuratively) to deprave; --corrupt, utterly perish.] [Zodhiates:  kata-intensive; phtheiro-to corrupt, destroy; to spoil utterly, lay waste. Referring to the mind in a moral sense, to deprave.]

c. minds [Strong: 3563 noûs, nooce; probably from the base of G1097; the intellect, i.e. mind (divine or human; in thought, feeling, or will); by implication, meaning:—mind, understanding.]

d. reprobate [Strong: 96 adókimos, ad-ok'-ee-mos; from G1 (as a negative particle) and G1384; unapproved, i.e. rejected; by implication, worthless (literally or morally):—castaway, rejected, reprobate.] [Zodhiates: adokimos; a-without; dokimos-acceptable;  unapproved, unworthy, spurious].

e. concerning [Strong: 4012 perí, per-ee'; from the base of G4008; properly, through (all over), i.e. around; figuratively with respect to; used in various applications, of place, cause or time (with the genitive case denoting the subject or occasion or superlative point; with the accusative case the locality, circuit, matter, circumstance or general period):—(there-)about, above, against, at, on behalf of, × and his company, which concern, (as) concerning, for, × how it will go with, ((there-, where-)) of, on, over, pertaining (to), for sake, × (e-)state, (as) touching, (where-)by (in), with. In comparative, it retains substantially the same meaning of circuit (around), excess (beyond), or completeness (through).]

f. the [Strong: 3588. [tēn] ὁ ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: [tēn] ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. T.] [Additional variants: tē, hoi, oi, tēn, ta, tēs, tois, tais, tō, tōn, tou, hé, Hē, hē, hai, tas.]

g. faith [Strong: 4102 pístis, pis'-tis; from G3982; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:—assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.] [Vines: The main elements in faith in its relation to the invisible God…are brought out in the use of this noun and corresponding verb, pisteuo, (1) a firm conviction, producing a full acknowledgement of God’s revelation or truth;…(2) a personal surrender to Him; (3) a conduct inspired by such surrender.]

1). An applicable verse regarding demonic doctrine is found in first letter to Timothy.

a). 1 Timothy 4:1-3 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter days, some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

b). Though only two of those doctrines are mentioned in particular, forbidding to marry (celebate priesthood: Catholic), and commanding to abstain from meats (can’t eat meat on Fridays: Catholic), there will be others implied in the verses that follow.

c). There are at this time more than a few doctrines of devils in the church and I believe that these will be some of the means these individuals will use to attempt to destroy the church, but they will only be able to persuade those who are willingly ignorant of the Word to the point they are neglecting their own responsibility to seek a deeper relationship with God, blindly following and being obedient to these pretenders to the faith. Two of the traditional doctrines under attack are the inspiration and authority of Scripture. Any believer, church, Pastor, ministry that does not uphold these two doctrines is not to be trusted nor listened to. The following is a sample of poisonous preaching from Harry Emerson Fosdick a liberal in his time but now a hero among like hearted and like minded people. This small paragraph is from his message, “Shall the Fundamentalists Win?” preached in the 1920’s.

(1)  “They insist that we must all believe in the historicity of certain special miracles, preeminently the virgin birth of our Lord; that we must believe in a special theory of inspiration—that the original documents of the Scripture, which of course we no longer possess, were inerrantly dictated to men a good deal as a man might dictate to a stenographer; that we must believe in a special theory of the Atonement—that the blood of our Lord, shed in a substitutionary death, placates an alienated Deity and makes possible welcome for the returning sinner; and that we must believe in the second coming of our Lord upon the clouds of heaven to set up a millennium here, as the only way in which God can bring history to a worthy denouement.”

(2) The first individual to attack the inspiration and authority of Scripture was the devil in Genesis 3:1: http://theophilus-loverofgodsword.blogspot.com/2013/02/genesis-31.html The warning about rejecting the blood atonement of Christ Jesus is found in my notes on Jude 11:   http://theophilus-loverofgodsword.blogspot.com/2007/03/jude-11.html

2). Perhaps in these elements they are to be rejected. I am fully persuaded that in all of these elements of faith, examples can be found in Scripture where failure to believe them leads to gross error.

2 Timothy 3:7

2 Timothy 3:7

Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

a. NLT: (Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.) c. Young’s Literal Translation: always learning, and never to a knowledge of truth able to come, [The Young's Literal Translation was translated by Robert Young, who believed in a strictly literal translation of God's word. This version of the Bible is in the public domain.]

d. Amplified Bible:  [These weak women will listen to anybody who will teach them]; they are forever inquiring and getting information, but are never able to arrive at a recognition and knowledge of the Truth. [Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC) Copyright © 1954, 1958, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1987 by The Lockman Foundation]

1.”Ever learning…”

a. Ever [Strong: 3842 pántote, pan'-tot-eh; from G3956 and G3753; every when, i.e. at all times:—alway(-s), ever(-more).] [Zodhiates: always, at all times, ever.]

b. learning [Strong: 3129 manthánō, man-than'-o; prolongation from a primary verb, another form of which, μαθέω mathéō, is used as an alternate in certain tenses; to learn (in any way):—learn, understand.]  [Zodhiates: to learn, to have learned something.]

2. “…and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

a. and [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. never [Strong: 3368 mēdépote, may-dep'-ot-eh; from G3366 and G4218; not even ever:—never.]

c. able [Strong: 1410 dýnamai, doo'-nam-ahee; of uncertain affinity; to be able or possible:—be able, can (do, + -not), could, may, might, be possible, be of power.] [Zodhiates: to be able.]

d. [to] come [Strong: 2064 érchomai, er'-khom-ahee; middle voice of a primary verb (used only in the present and imperfect tenses, the others being supplied by a kindred (middle voice) ἐλεύθομαι eleúthomai el-yoo'-thom-ahee, or (active) ἔλθω élthō el'-tho, which do not otherwise occur); to come or go (in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively):—accompany, appear, bring, come, enter, fall out, go, grow, × light, × next, pass, resort, be set.]

e. to [Strong: 1519 eis, ice; a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:—(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), …ward, (where-)fore, with.]

f. [the] knowledge [Strong: 1922 epígnōsis, ep-ig'-no-sis; from G1921; recognition, i.e. (by implication) full discernment, acknowledgement:—(ac-)knowledge(-ing, - ment).] [Zodhiates: It is more intensive that gnosis (1108), knowledge, because it expresses a more thorough participation in the acquiring of knowledge on the part of the learner. In the N.T., it often refers to knowledge which very powerfully influences the form of religious life, a knowledge laying claim to personal involvement.]

1). Paul is contrasting mere head knowledge with revelation knowledge. These people are “ever learning”, constantly educating themselves, but what they are learning never affects their life, never changes their relationship with God if they even have one.  The knowledge that Paul referred to in this verse is a deeper knowledge these people never receive. This is knowledge the Spirit of God gives to those who are hungry, their hearts cry out for it, knowing there is only one place to get it, the throne of God. The definition bears repeating. “…it expresses a more thorough participation in the acquiring of knowledge on the part of the learner…”, and it “…refers to knowledge which very powerfully influences the form of religious life, a knowledge laying claim to personal involvement.” If they would come to this “knowledge” they would cease to be weak-willed women and men. This is demonstrated in the use of this same word in other verses.

a). 2 Peter 1:2-4 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

b). The “more thorough participation in the acquiring of knowledge on the part of the learner”, is referring to meditating and confessing the word of God in our lives. Jesus spoke about it the Gospel of Mark, and so did Solomon in Proverbs.

(1). Mark 4:24 And He said to them, Be careful what you are hearing. The measure of thought and study you give to the truth you hear will be the measure of virtue and knowledge that comes back to you--and more besides will be given to you who hear.

(2). Proverbs 4:20-22 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

4:21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

4:22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

2). The impartation of the revelation brings the grace and peace that builds us up and gives us the empowerment to obey and the faith to receive the inheritance.

a). Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

g. [the] truth [Strong: 225 alḗtheia, al-ay'-thi-a; from G227; truth:—true, × truly, truth, verity. [Zodhiates: Truth, reality; the unveiled reality lying at the basis of and agreeing with an appearance; the manifested, the veritable essence of matter. ]

1). I am reminded of what Jesus said to his followers.

a). John 8:31, 32 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

2). The reason these people are ever learning, always learning, but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth which leads to freedom, is they are not walking in what they learn, its all head knowledge. This is a perfect application of hearing and not doing.

a). James 1:22-24 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

b). The wonderful word play in the King James I believe is more profound than the NIV that says, “immediately forgets what he looks like.”  Although that may suffice it does not carry the weight of what the King James declares, he forgot “what manner of man he was”. The manner of man he saw when he looked into the mirror of the word of God, (cp. 2Corinthians 3:18).

3). Revelation knowledge will keep, preserve and protect, whereas mere head knowledge never will. Notice carefully that the “evil man” and the “strange woman” in these verses are both former believers.

a). Proverbs 2:10-19 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;

2:11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:

2:12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;

2:13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;

2:14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;

2:15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:

2:16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;

2:17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.

2:18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.

2:19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.

b). Luke 6:46-49 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

6:47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:

6:48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

6:49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

4). If we as believers do not gain revelation knowledge and receive the grace and peace to enable us to walk in what we know and learn out of the word of God, we are building our lives upon the sand. If we never meditate on the word to receive revelation knowledge that will impart grace and peace to walk in obedience to the Word, we are deceiving ourselves, and when the storms come we will be blown away, our house will fall.

a. For [Strong: 1063 gár, gar; a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):—and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. of [Strong: 1537 ek, ek; a primary preposition denoting origin (the point whence action or motion proceeds), from, out (of place, time, or cause; literal or figurative; direct or remote):—after, among, × are, at, betwixt(-yond), by (the means of), exceedingly, (+ abundantly above), for(- th), from (among, forth, up), + grudgingly, + heartily, X heavenly, × hereby, + very highly, in, …ly, (because, by reason) of, off (from), on, out among (from, of), over, since, × thenceforth, through, × unto, × vehemently, with(-out).]

c. [this] sort [Strong: 5130 toútōn, too'-tone; genitive case plural masculine or neuter of G3778; of (from or concerning) these (persons or things):—such, their, these (things), they, this sort, those.]

d. [are] they [Strong: 1526 eisí, i-see'; 3rd person plural present indicative of G1510; they are:—agree, are, be, dure, × is, were.]

e. which [Strong: 3588. [hoi] ὁ ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: [hoi] ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. T.] [Additional variants: tē, hoi, oi, tēn, ta, tēs, tois, tais, tō, tōn, tou, hé, ‘Hē  hē, hai, tas.]

f. creep [Strong: 1744 endýnō, en-doo'-no; from G1772 and G1416; to sink (by implication, wrap (compare G1746) on, i.e. (figuratively) sneak:—creep.]

g. into [Strong: 1519 eis, ice; a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:—(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), …ward, (where-)fore, with.]

h. houses [Strong: 3614 oikía, oy-kee'-ah; from G3624; properly, residence (abstractly), but usually (concretely) an abode (literally or figuratively); by implication, a family (especially domestics):—home, house(-hold).]

 1). Churches met in houses: Romans 16:5 Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my well-beloved Epaenetus, who is the first fruits of Achaia unto Christ.

2. “…and lead captive silly women laden with sins…”

a. and [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. lead captive [Strong: 162 * aichmalōteúō, aheekh-mal-o-tew'-o; from G164; to capture (like G163):—lead captive.]

1). A synonym of the Greek word used here for “lead captive” is used in Colossians 2:8 for the word “spoil”.

a). Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

b). spoil [4812 * sylagogeo][Thayer: to carry off booty, to carry one off as a captive (and slave), to lead away from the truth and subject to one's sway.]

2). Surely one component in these women being “lead captive” is they have been taken prisoner by a philosophy, a deceit, or a tradition. Anyone can look around and see our culture has been taken captive by a multitude of philosophies and traditions and deceits that have led us away from God.

c. silly women [Strong: 1133 * gynaikárion, goo-nahee-kar'-ee-on; a diminutive from G1135; a little (i.e. foolish) woman:—silly woman.] [Zodhiates:a diminutive of gune, a woman wife; a foolish woman; one who displays immaturity and a lack of dignity.]

1). I do not like the King James phrase “silly women”. The NIV “weak willed women”, is more accurate and to the point. Why women are only mentioned is unknown to me, I have met quite a few silly men who are just as deceived as these silly women.

d. laden [Strong: 4987 * sōreúō, sore-yoo'-o; from another form of G4673; to pile up (literally or figuratively):—heap, load.] [Zodhiates: to heap up; heaped up with sins, burdened, laden.]

1). Sin weighs us down and hinders or prohibits our walk with Christ Jesus or of running the race.

a). Hebrews 12:1  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

e. [with] sins [Strong: hamartía, ham-ar-tee'-ah; from G264; a sin (properly abstract):—offence, sin(-ful).]

3. “…led away with divers lusts.”

a. led away [Strong: 71 * ágō, ag'-o; a primary verb; properly, to lead; by implication, to bring, drive, (reflexively) go, (specially) pass (time), or (figuratively) induce:—be, bring (forth), carry, (let) go, keep, lead away, be open.] [Zodhiates: to lead, lead along, bring, carry, remove.]

b. divers [Strong: 4164 * poikílos, poy-kee'-los; of uncertain derivation; motley, i.e. various in character:—divers, manifold.] [Zodhiates: meaning various, diverse, manifold.]

c. lusts [Strong: 1939 * epithymía, ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah; from G1937; a longing (especially for what is forbidden):—concupiscence, desire, lust (after).] [Zodhiates: to desire greatly, longing, lust.]

1). Paul writes that these women, were led away with many and different lusts, lusts of the flesh, and demonic spirits leading them and working in them.

a). Galatians 5:19-21Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

b). Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

2). These women were taken captive by these men because they were in a vulnerable condition because of their yielding to sin. When we habitually yield to sin, to lust, we are placing ourselves in a vulnerable position of being taken captive.

a). Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

3). These women have to be included with those individuals described in the previous chapter of 2 Timothy.

a). 2 Timothy 2:25, 26 In meekness instructing those who oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Exodus 21:28-29

Exodus 21:28-29

If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.

But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death.

a. In my view there is no doubt after looking at all the evidence that these defendants were worthy of the death penalty.

1.In January 2001, two dogs killed Diane Whipple of San Francisco as she tried to enter her apartment. In the year that followed, shocking details emerged about the case, and criminal charges ranging all the way to murder were filed against the owners of the dogs, Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel. The guilty verdicts that were rendered in March 2002 did not finish the case. They rather were the start of its appellate phase, focusing upon the circumstances under which a dog owner should be found guilty of murder when her dog kills a person. In May 2007, the California Supreme Court sent the case back to the trial court for a new decision that most likely will start a fresh round of appeals. (To read about the latest decision, click here.) Attorney Kenneth Phillips, the author of Dog Bite Law, appeared regularly on CNN, CourtTV, and network television, giving extensive commentaries on the criminal prosecution as it took place. This section of Dog Bite Law was referred to as "the bible of the trial" and is the most comprehensive source of information about it, containing summaries of trial testimony, names of witnesses, legal analysis of the charges, clarification of the appellate case, and much more.

a. The crime: On January 26, 2001, shortly after 4:00 PM, San Francisco police and paramedics responded to calls from a Pacific Heights apartment building. They found a naked woman lying in blood, barely alive, her body bitten everywhere, bloody handprints covering the walls, and blood extending 4 feet up the walls and 30 feet own the hallway. Bits of clothing littered the floor, and a blood-soaked green nylon leash for a dog was lying nearby. A large dog was running loose, causing the officers to draw their guns. Nobody else could be seen.

b. The victim of this crime was Diane Whipple. She was a lacrosse coach, and lived in an apartment 50 feet from where the dogs lived. Whipple died that night at 8:55 p.m. at San Francisco General Hospital.

c. Bane and Hera were the Presa Canario dogs that savagely killed Whipple. Presa Canarios were originally bred for fighting, guarding and some herding in Spain's Canary Islands. The breed was near extinction by the 1950s and was brought back when it was mixed with mastiffs and others. Introduced in the United States in 1990, there are now more than 1,000.

d. The dogs were obtained for eventual sale through a web site called "Dog-o'-War." Seven such dogs first lived on a Trinity County farm, where they were not trained to fight, attack or kill. Then Bane and Hera lived for a couple of months in Los Angeles, and following that, inside the San Francisco apartment of Robert Edward Noel and Marjorie F. Knoller. The "Dog-o'-War" operation was shut down by prison authorities in April 2000.

e. Bane was euthanized the day of the attack. Following a dangerous dog hearing, Hera was ordered euthanized and was put down in January 2002. (From the website:www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/Whipple.html)

f. Testimony: “Nearly 60 witnesses testified…These witnesses, collectively, testified that there were about 30 occassions in which they or others had aggressive encounters with the dogs. Some also testified about incidents which showed the defendants lack of control over Bane and Hera. For example, several witnesses said they saw either Noel or Knoller being dragged by the dogs. A veterinarian, Donald Martin who examined the dogs while they were at Coumbs’ farm, testified that months prior to the mauling he had sent the defendants a letter warning them that Bane and Hera “would be liabilities in any household.” Several others testified about the warnings they gave the defendants; for example, the need to have the dogs muzzled.” (From the website: www.sanfranciscodogmauling.com)

Exodus 23:28-33

Exodus 23:28-33

And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.

I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee.

By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land.

And I will set thy bounds from the Red Sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.

Thou shalt make no covenant with them, not with their gods.

They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.

1.There are two spiritual principles that are revealed in this passage, that are applicable to us in the New Covenant.

a. The first is the co-laboring of God and Israel in the conquering of their enemies. In verse 28, 29 and 30 the LORD clearly says that He would drive out their enemies. Then in verse 31 the LORD says, “…for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.”

1). The failure to fully understand and be obedient to this was at the heart of the failure of the ten spies that Moses sent to spy out the land, in Numbers 13 and 14. God will do His part, but we have to be faithful and obedient to Him in order for us to believe we can do our part with his help.

a). Numbers 33:50-56 “And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye are passed over Jordan into the land of Canaan;

Then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places:

And ye shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein: for I have given you the land to possess it.

And ye shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: and to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give the less inheritance: every man’s inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers ye shall inherit.

But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.

Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.”

2). It is the same with the New Covenant; there is a co-laboring between God and us in order for us to receive our inheritance.

a). 2 Corinthians 6:1 “We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.”

b. The second principle is spiritual growth.

1). Ephesians 4:8-15 “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”

a). We are to grow up spiritually, and it takes time, it does not happen overnight.

2). Mark 4:26-29 “And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;

And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up, he knoweth not how.

For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.

But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.”
