1 Kings 4:29

And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.

1). It appears Adonijah was spoiled and never disciplined. Everything he ever did was ok with his father. So he figured he was going to be the next king because he was the oldest son.

2). God told David before Solomon was ever born that Solomon would be the king after David and that Solomon would build the Temple (1 Chronicles 22:6-10). This was about two decades before Solomon became King. Scholars say he was about 18 or 19 when he became King.
