Luke 20:27
Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

1. “Then came to him certain of the Sadducees…”

1). Sadducee, i.e. a member of the Jewish sect known as the Sadducees.
A Sadducee was a "member of the aristocratic party among the Jews, from whom the high-priests were almost invariably chosen" (Souter). For more discussion, see also 5330 /Pharisaíos("a Pharisee").
2). I would not be surprised if the question they asked was one of the proof texts they used to throw doubt on doctrinal opponents. The Pharisees were the conservative branch where the Sadducees were the liberal.
a). Acts 23:6-8 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
23:7 And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.
23:8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
