Isaiah 44:5

Isaiah 44:5

One shall say, I am the LORD'S; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and surname himself by the name of Israel.

a. NLT: Some will proudly claim, ‘I belong to the LORD.’ Others will say, ‘I am a descendant of Jacob.’ Some will write the LORD’s name on their hands and will take the name of Israel as their own.”

b. NIV: Some will say, ‘I belong to the LORD’; others will call themselves by the name of Jacob; still others will write on their hand, ‘The LORD’s,’ and will take the name Israel.

c. Amplified Bible: One will say, I am the Lord’s; and another will call himself by the name of Jacob; and another will write [even brand or tattoo] upon his hand, I am the Lord’s, and surname himself by the [honorable] name of Israel.

Isaiah 44:4

And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

a. NLT: They will thrive like watered grass, like willows on a riverbank.

b. NIV: They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams.

c. Amplified Bible: And they shall spring up among the grass like willows or poplars by the watercourses.

d. Septuagint: and they shall spring up as grass between brooks, and as willows on [the banks of] running water.

1. “And they shall spring up as among the grass…”

Isaiah 44:3

Isaiah 44:3-5 is a passage filled with promises concerning our children. It was passed along to me by Victoria Bowling.

Isaiah 44:3

For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

a. NLT: For I will pour out water to quench your thirst and to irrigate your parched fields. And I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your children.

b. NIV: For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.

c. Amplified Bible:  For I will pour water upon him who is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit upon your offspring, and My blessing upon your descendants.

d. Septuagint: For I will give water to the thirsty that walk in a dry land: I will put my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessings upon thy children.

d. Commentary:

1). Albert Barnes: Floods, rivers, streams, and waters, are often used in the Scriptures, and especially in Isaiah, to denote plenteous divine blessings, particularly the abundant influences of the Holy Spirit. That it here refers to the Holy Spirit and his influences, is proved by the parallel expressions in the subsequent part of the verse.

2). Don Costello: There is no Hebrew for “him” in the text, but there is no doubt this promise is referring primarily to people and secondly to creation is shown by the sections that mention our “seed” and our “offspring”. The words “dry ground” are used as a metaphor to describe the human condition.

a). Psalm 63:1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

2. “…and floods upon the dry ground…”

1). Notice in the following verse the use of the Hebrew word “blessings”. The Hebrew word for blessing encompasses spiritual, physical, and financial blessings.

a). Genesis 49:25 Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:

b). “Blessings of heaven above”: spiritual. “Blessings of the deep that lieth under”: natural resources. “Blessings of the breasts and of the womb”: children.

Jeremiah 20:8

Jeremiah 20:8

For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the Lord was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily.

a. NLT: When I speak, the words burst out. “Violence and destruction!” I shout. So these messages from the LORD have made me a household joke.

b. NIV: Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the LORD has brought me insult and reproach all day long.

c. Amplified Bible: For whenever I speak, I must cry out and complain; I shout, Violence and destruction! For the word of the Lord has become to me a reproach and a derision and has brought me insult all day long.

d. Septuagint: For I will laugh with my bitter speech, I will call upon rebellion and misery: for the word of the Lord is become a reproach to me and a mockery all my days.

1). Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsh: I am become a laughter the whole day long, every one mocketh at me. Jeremiah 20:8. For as often as I speak, I must call out and cry violence and spoil, for the word of Jahveh is made a reproach and a derision to me all the day.

2).  John Gill: I am in derision daily, everyone mocketh me; he was the laughing stock of everyone of the people of Israel, from the highest to the lowest; princes, priests, and people, all derided him and his prophecies, and that continually, every day, and all the day long, and especially when he was in the stocks; though it was not only his person they mocked, but the word of the Lord by him, as appears from Jeremiah 20:8.

3). Geneva Bible Notes: He shows that he did his office in that he reproved the people of their vices and threatened them with God's judgments: but because he was derided and persecuted for this, he was discouraged, and would have stopped preaching, except that God's spirit forced him to it.

Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.

a. NLT: But if I say I’ll never mention the LORD or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!

b. NIV: But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.

c. Amplified Bible:  If I say, I will not make mention of [the Lord] or speak any more in His name, in my mind and heart it is as if there were a burning fire shut up in my bones. And I am weary of enduring and holding it in; I cannot [contain it any longer].

d. Septuagint: Then I said, I will by no means name the name of the Lord, and I will no more at all speak in his name. But it was a burning fire flaming in my bones, and I am utterly weakened on all sides, and cannot bear [up].

e. Jeremiah became bitter toward God because as he obeyed God and gave the word he received nothing but persecution. As a result in Jeremiah 20:9, Jeremiah made the decision not to speak the word of God because declaring God’s word meant only pain for him, so he decided not to speak any more.
1). Jeremiah 20:7, 8 O Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived; thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me.

2. “…But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones…”

2). Perhaps similar to what any prophet felt. The Spirit of Christ was in them, urging them, inspiring them to speak.

3). The Spirit of Christ filled Micah with power, judgment, and might to speak the word of the LORD.

a). Micah 3:8 But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and of Israel his sin.

1). In spite of his decision not to speak God’s word any more, Jeremiah’s fight to not speak was a losing battle. The Apostle Paul knew also deep in his heart it is worse with us if we are not obedient to the gospel.

Jeremiah 17:8

Jeremiah 17:8

For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

a. NLT: They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.

b. NIV: They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

c. Amplified Bible:  For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters that spreads out its roots by the river; and it shall not see and fear when heat comes; but its leaf shall be green. It shall not be anxious and full of care in the year of drought, nor shall it cease yielding fruit.

1). What follows are the characteristics of a man or woman who trusts the Lord. “he shall be”. The interesting thing is the characteristics are identical as those who meditate the word, which means that the individual who truly “trusts” God will meditate the Scriptures also, the  individual verses that apply to what he is trusting God for.

2. “…as a tree planted by the waters…”

2). He will not see when heat cometh because he walks by faith and not by sight. The heat comes because the drought comes but because he walks by faith they do not determine his actions.

But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

1). Commentary

a). Albert Barnes Notes: Margin, as Hebrew, 'The captivity of the mighty.' That which could not have been rescued by any ordinary means. The language here refers undoubtedly to Babylon, and to the captivity of the Jews there.

2). Don Costello Notes: In light of the context of the verse, I have to say one of the definitions of the Hebrew word lacking here is “rescued”. These captives were rescued from their captivity. The primary meaning refers of course to Israel, but there can also be a spiritual New Covenant application to us. The captives of the mighty have been taken away, have been rescued by Christ Jesus and what he did for us. In each of the following passages, the captives are released and rescued by our Savior Christ Jesus.

a). Psalm 68:18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.

b). Ephesians 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

3. “…for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee…”

1). New Covenant application: In light of what God has done for us through Christ Jesus we must contend in faith for what Christ Jesus has won for us.

c. New Covenant application: The salvation of our children. I want to reflect a little on what he has already said in this verse, he is speaking of the salvation of our children.

1). Those of our children who are “captives of the mighty shall be taken away” or seized and taken away from the mighty. Those of our children who are “the prey of the terrible shall be delivered”, Glory to God! The LORD goes on to say that He, God, will contend with those who contend with us and He, God, will “save our children.” Along those same lines is a passage from Jeremiah 31.

a). Jeremiah 31:16, 17  Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.
31:17 And there is hope in thine end, saith the LORD, that thy children shall come again to their own border.

2). I don’t care what kind of bondage the children are in. If they are not dead, believe God for their divine protection. Believe and confess these promises concerning your children. It is God’s will that they be saved, He has given us His will concerning it. In light of that we can apply the following words of Jesus to us.

a). Mark 11:22-24  And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

3). God created the family unit, so it is His will that whole families be saved and in relationship with Him.

a). Acts 16:30-34 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
10:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
10:32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
10:33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
16:34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

d. Another New Covenant application: Salvation is open to all, to all in our own houses, our families.

1). Romans 10:9-13 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

2). John 3:16, 17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
            3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world                         through him might be saved.
