But I say unto you, It shall be
more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

(subjectively or objectively, for or against); by extension, a tribunal; by

1). Why did Jesus say it would be “more
tolerable” for Tyre, Sidon, and Sodom, “in the day of judgment” than for
Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum? It’s because Jesus was doing “mighty works”
in their midst and they refused to repent, yet he said if those same mighty
works had been done in Tyre, Sidon, Sodom & Gomorrah, “they would have
repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes” and they “would have remained until
this day”. The three cities of Chorizin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum were given
greater light than the cities of Tyre, Sidon, Sodom and Gomorrah. Those three
cities were in the area where Jesus moved his headquarters in the beginning of
his ministry.
a). Matthew 4:13-16 And leaving
Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the
borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
4:14 That it might be fulfilled which
was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
4:15 The land of Zabulon, and the land
of Nephthalim, by way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
4:16 The people which sat in darkness
saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light
is sprung up.
2). When Jesus sent out his disciples
to evangelize he spoke of the same levels of judgment.
a). Matthew 10:5-15 These twelve Jesus
sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles,
and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
10:6 But go rather to the lost sheep
of the house of Israel.
10:7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The
kingdom of heaven is at hand.
10:8 Heal the sick, cleanse the
lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
10:9 Provide neither gold, nor silver,
nor brass in your purses,
10:10 Nor scrip for your journey,
neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of
his meat.
10:11 And into whatsoever city or town
ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.
10:12 And when ye come into an house,
salute it.
10:13 And if the house be worthy, let
your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.
10:14 And whosoever shall not
receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city,
shake off the dust of your feet.
10:15 Verily I say unto you, It shall
be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment,
than for that city.
3). Greater light, more revelation
requires more responsibility of proper response and if rejected more severe
judgment.
a). Luke 12:47, 48 And that servant, which knew his lord's will,
and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten
with many stripes.
12:48 But he that knew not, and did
commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto
whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have
committed much, of him they will ask the more.
b). This clearly reveals not only
levels of judgment but also levels of punishment in hell.
2. “…than for you.”
