Hebrews 10:22

Hebrews 10:22

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

a. NLT: let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

b. NIV: let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

c. YLT: may we draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having the hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and having the body bathed with pure water;

d. Amplified Bible Classic:  Let us all come forward and draw near with true (honest and sincere) hearts in unqualified assurance and absolute conviction engendered by faith (by that leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness), having our hearts sprinkled and purified from a guilty (evil) conscience and our bodies cleansed with pure water.

1. “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith…”

d. heart [2588 * kardia] [Strong: prolonged from a primary kar (Latin cor, "heart"); the heart, i.e. (figuratively) the thoughts or feelings (mind); also (by analogy) the middle:--(+ broken-)heart(-ed).]

1). Hypocrites worship without true hears, hearts far from Him.

a). Matthew 15:7, 8 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

1). We can draw near in faith because He has promised us He will meet us.

a). Zechariah 1:3 Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.

b). James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

c). Jeremiah 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

2. “…having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience…”

a. having…sprinkled [4472 * rhantizo] [Strong: from a derivative of rhaino (to sprinkle); to render besprinkled, i.e. asperse (ceremonially or figuratively):-- sprinkle.]

1). The “sprinkling” refers to the dedication of a Covenant. The first Covenant was dedicated with a sprinkling of the blood of calves and goats.

a). Hebrews 9:16-22  For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
9:17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
9:18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
9:19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
9:20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.
9:21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.
9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

2). The New Covenant was dedicated with the blood of Christ.

a). Matthew 26:26-29 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
26:27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
26:29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

b). 1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

3). Prophecy

a). Isaiah 52:15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.


b. our hearts  [2588 * kardia] [Strong: prolonged from a primary kar (Latin cor, "heart"); the heart, i.e. (figuratively) the thoughts or feelings (mind); also (by analogy) the middle:--(+ broken-)heart(-ed).]

d. an evil [4190 * poneros] [Strong: from a derivative of 4192; hurtful, i.e. evil (properly, in effect or influence, and thus differing from 2556, which refers rather to essential character, as well as from 4550, which indicates degeneracy from original virtue); figuratively, calamitous; also (passively) ill, i.e. diseased; but especially (morally) culpable, i.e. derelict, vicious, facinorous; neuter (singular) mischief, malice, or (plural) guilt; masculine (singular) the devil, or (plural) sinners:--bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious, wicked(-ness).]

e. conscience [4893 * suneidesis; sun-together; eido-to know] [Strong: from a prolonged form of 4894; co-perception, i.e. moral consciousness:--conscience.] ][Thayer: the consciousness of anything, the soul as distinguishing between what is morally good and bad, prompting to do the former and shun the latter, commending one, condemning the other, the conscience.][Zodhiates: Conscience, to be one’s own witness, one’s own conscience coming forth to bear witness.][Don Costello: One’s own inner voice , Romans 2:15.]

1). An evil conscience is one that continues to have a knowledge of unforgiven sin. A heart sprinkled by the blood of Jesus, has an inner voice that bears witness that “I am forgiven!”

a). Hebrews 10:15-19 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
10:18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

3. “…and our bodies washed with pure water.”

b. our bodies [4983 * soma] [Strong: from 4982; the body (as a sound whole), used in a very wide application, literally or figuratively:--bodily, body, slave.]

c. washed [3068 * louo] [Strong: a primary verb; to bathe (the whole person; whereas 3538 means to wet a part only, and 4150 to wash, cleanse garments exclusively):--wash.]

d. with pure [2513 * katharos] [Strong: of uncertain affinity; clean (literally or figuratively):--clean, clear, pure.]

e. water [5204 * hudor, and genitive case, hudatos] [Strong:  from the base of 5205; water (as if rainy) literally or figuratively:--water.]

1). This is the washing of the word of God in our lives. As we see in the Scriptures how we are to live our lives before God and man, the grace is provided for  

a). Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

b). Psalm 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

2). The construction and use of the laver by the priesthood was a foreshadow of us washing our bodies in the word in our priesthood of the New Covenant.

a). Exodus 30:17-21 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
30:18 Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein.
30:19 For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat:
30:20 When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the Lord:
30:21 So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations.


Hebrews 1:9

Hebrews 1:9

Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

a. NLT: You love justice and hate evil. Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you,
pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.

b. NIV: You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.”

c. YLT: Thou didst love righteousness, and didst hate lawlessness; because of this did He anoint thee -- God, thy God -- with oil of gladness above thy partners;'

d. Amplified Bible Classic: You have loved righteousness [You have delighted in integrity, virtue, and uprightness in purpose, thought, and action] and You have hated lawlessness (injustice and iniquity). Therefore God, [even] Your God (Godhead), has anointed You with the oil of exultant joy and gladness above and beyond Your companions.

e. Worrell Translation: Thou lovedst righteousness, and hatedst iniquity; therefore, God, Thy God, anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy fellows”.

f. Wuest Translation: You loved righteousness and hated lawlessness. On this account there has anointed you, God, your God, with the oil of exultant joy above your associates.

1. “Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity…”

a. [Thou hast] loved [Strong: 25 agapao ag-ap-ah'-o perhaps from agan (much) (or compare 5689); to love (in a social or moral sense):--(be-)love(-ed).]

b. righteousness [1343 dikaiosune dik-ah-yos-oo'-nay from 1342; equity (of character or act); specially (Christian) justification:--righteousness.] [Thayer: in a broad sense: state of him who is as he ought to be, righteousness, the condition acceptable to God, the doctrine concerning the way in which man may attain a state approved of God, integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking feeling, and acting, in a narrower sense, justice or the virtue which gives each his due.]

1). The above definition covers all aspects of the term righteousness and the verse declares Jesus loves righteousness. Jesus loves when men and women think correctly, act rightly, in integrity and purity. Jesus loves the truth that men and women every where are brought into a right relationship with God through what he, Jesus did.

a). Romans 3:21-26 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

c. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

d. hated [Strong: 3404 miseo mis-eh'-o from a primary misos (hatred); to detest (especially to persecute); by extension, to love less:--hate(-ful).]

e. iniquity [Strong: 458 anomia an-om-ee'-ah from 459; illegality, i.e. violation of law or (genitive case) wickedness:--iniquity, X transgress(-ion of) the law, unrighteousness.]  [Zodhiates: In most cases in the NT it means not the absence of the Law, but the violation of Law, transgression or lawlessness.] [Thayer: the condition of without law, because ignorant of it, because of violating it, contempt and violation of law, iniquity, wickedness.]

1). This verse is a quote of the whole of Psalm 45:7.

a). Psalm 45:7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

b). Because it is the same verse, many of the notes found under Psalm 45:7 will be repeated here.

2). Jesus hates iniquity, he hates lawlessness. He hates when men have a contempt for the law and purposely violate it.

a). Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

b). What is fascinating and very sobering about the above passage is the people he is referring to claim Jesus as their LORD! They cast out devils! They prophesy! It appears these people are full gospel!
                                 
2. “…therefore God, even thy God…”

a. therefore [Strong: 1223 dia dee-ah' a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal, or occasional):--after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause) ... fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, 
X though, through(-out), to, wherefore, with (-in). In composition it retains the same general importance.]

b. therefore [Strong: 5124  touto too'-to neuter singular nominative or accusative case of 3778; that thing:--here (-unto), it, partly, self(-same), so, that (intent), the same, there(-fore, -unto), this, thus, where(-fore).]

c. God [Strong: 2316 theos theh'-os of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

d. even thy [Strong: 4675 sou soo genitive case of 4771; of thee, thy:--X home, thee, thine (own), thou, thy.]

e. God [Strong: 2316 theos theh'-os of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

1). These five words of Hebrews 1:9 are some of the most powerful in the Bible. In them we have God speaking to the Son and calling him, his God, but we also have the same God referring to himself as God to the Son. Wow! His knowledge is too wonderful for me!

3. “…hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.”

a. hath anointed [Strong: 5548 chrio khree'-o probably akin to 5530 through the idea of contact; to smear or rub with oil, i.e. (by implication) to consecrate to an office or religious service:--anoint.]

1). The Greek transliteration of the Hebrew word for anointed is “Christ”. It is first used in the beginning of the gospels.

a). Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

b). Mark 1:1, 2 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
1:2 As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

c). Christ is not Jesus’ last name. It is an Old Testament title referring to the person who would fulfill hundreds of prophecies.

2). There had to be some form of anointing from his conception when he became man because he was conceived by the Holy Ghost.

a). Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

b). Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

c). There is also an anointing from meditating the Scriptures.

3). His anointing for service took place at his baptism.

a). Matthew 3:13-17 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
3:14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

b. thee [Strong: 4571 se seh accusative case singular of 4771; thee:--thee, thou, X thy house.]

c. with the oil [Strong: 1637 elaion el'-ah-yon neuter of the same as 1636; olive oil:--oil.]

d. of gladness [Strong: 20 sis ag-al-lee'-as-is from 21; exultation; specially, welcome:--gladness, (exceeding) joy.] [Thayer: exultation,  extreme joy, gladness.]

e. above [Strong: 3844 para par-ah' a primary preposition; properly, near; i.e. (with genitive case) from beside (literally or figuratively), (with dative case) at (or in) the vicinity of (objectively or subjectively), (with accusative case) to the proximity with (local (especially beyond or opposed to) or causal (on account of):--above, against, among, at, before, by, contrary to, X friend, from, + give (such things as they), + that (she) had, X his, in, more than, nigh unto, (out) of, past, save, side...by, in the sight of, than, (there-)fore, with. 1). Though Isaiah refers to Jesus as a man of sorrows in Isaiah 53:3 and that Hebrew word means mental and physical pain, as the Scripture says here and in Psalms 45:7, Jesus was anointed with the oil of extreme joy. Hallelujah!

Hebrews 1:8

Hebrews 1:8

But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

a. NLT: But to the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever.
You rule with a scepter of justice.

b. NIV: But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

c. YLT: and unto the Son: 'Thy throne, O God, is to the age of the age; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy reign;

d. Amplified Bible: But as to the Son, He says to Him, Your throne, O God, is forever and ever (to the ages of the ages), and the scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of absolute righteousness (of justice and straightforwardness).

e. Worrell Translation: but respecting the Son, “Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever”, and, “A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Thy Kingdom;

f. Wuest Translation: But with reference to the Son He says, Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. And the scepter of equity is the scepter of His kingdom.

1. “But unto the Son he saith…”

a. But [1161 * de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. unto [4314 * pros] [Strong: a strengthened form of 4253; a preposition of direction; forward to, i.e. toward (with the genitive case, the side of, i.e. pertaining to; with the dative case, by the side of, i.e. near to; usually with the accusative case, the place, time, occasion, or respect, which is the destination of the relation, i.e. whither or for which it is predicated):--about, according to , against, among, at, because of, before, between, (where-)by, for, X at thy house, in, for intent, nigh unto, of, which pertain to, that, to (the end that), X together, to (you) -ward, unto, with(-in). In the comparative case, it denotes essentially the same applications, namely, motion towards, accession to, or nearness at.]

c. the Son [5207 * huios] [Strong: apparently a primary word; a "son" (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship:--child, foal, son.]

1). In Hebrews 1:1-14, the writer is referencing the different contexts of when and what God is speaking. In verse seven, the previous verse he says, “of the angels he saith”. In verse eight though He, God is speaking to the Son, Jesus. There are other recorded instances where God the Father spoke to His Son Jesus.

a). Matthew 3:13-17 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
3:14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

2). What follows in Hebrews 1:8-12 is one of the most clearest Scriptural witnesses that Jesus is God Almighty.

3). Arthur Pink, Exposition of Hebrews, p58. “How sharp is the antithesis! How immeasurable the gulf which separates between creature and Creator! The angels are but “spirits,” the Son is “God.” They are but “ministers,” His is the “throne.” They are but “a flame of fire,” the executioners of judgment, He is the One who commands and commissions them.”

d. he saith [No Greek: The words “he saith” were added by the translators to continue the thought of Hebrews 1:7, that is, God said one thing to the angels and something entirely different to the Son.]

1). Hebrews 1:8 quotes in full Psalm 45:6

a). Psalm 45:6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the scepter of thy kingdom is a right scepter.

2). The referencing of this verse and applying it to Jesus is declaring that Jesus is God. There can be no other conclusion. . Within this phrase not only does He, God, refer to Jesus as “God”, the LORD says that his throne will be forever and ever. The Hebrew phrase in Psalms is two different words.

a).  forever [Strong: 5769 `owlam o-lawm' or lolam {o-lawm'}; concealed, i.e. the vanishing point; generally, time out of mind (past or future), i.e. (practically) eternity; frequentatively, adverbial (especially with prepositional prefix) always:--alway(-s), ancient (time), any more, continuance, eternal, (for, (n-))ever(-lasting, -more, of old), lasting, long (time), (of) old (time), perpetual, at any time, (beginning of the) world (+ without end).]

b). ever [Strong: 5703 `ad ad; from 5710; properly a (peremptory) terminus, i.e. (by implication) duration, in the sense of advance or perpetuity (substantially as a noun, either with or without a preposition):--eternity, ever(- lasting, -more), old, perpetually, + world without end.]

3). The language is clear His kingdom and throne will be forever and ever.

3. “…a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.”

a. a scepter [Strong: 4464 rhabdos hrab'-dos; from the base of 4474; a stick or wand (as a cudgel, a cane or a baton of royalty):--rod, sceptre, staff.]

1). When we look at the Hebrew another interesting Hebrew word treasure is found in the word “scepter”

a). scepter [Strong: 7626 shebet, shay’bet; from and unused root probably meaning to branch off; a scion, i.e. (literally) a stick (for punishing, writing, fighting, ruling, walking, etc.) or (figuratively) a clan:--X correction, dart, rod, cepter, staff, tribe.]

2). This same Hebrew word is used in Isaiah when also referring to the reign of the Messiah. The Hebrew word is translated “rod”.

a). Isaiah 11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

3). Another reference to the rule of the Messiah is found in Psalm 2.

a). Psalm 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
