Numbers 13:30
And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

1. “And Caleb stilled the people before Moses…”
a. [And] Caleb [Strong: 3612 Kâlêb, kaw-labe'; perhaps a form of H3611, or else from the same root in the sense of forcible; Caleb, the name of three Israelites:—Caleb.]
b. stilled [Strong: 2013 hâçâh, haw-saw'; to hush:--hold peace (tongue), (keep) silence, be silent, still.] [Gesenius: to command to be silent].

1). Caleb forcibly caused the people to shut up. This Hebrew word is always used in a forcible manner, in a commanding manner. In order for an atmosphere of faith to prevail it is necessary that unbelief be silenced. We can see this demonstrated in the life of Jesus, in particular when he raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead. When Jesus arrived at the house he removed all the unbelievers.
a). Mark 5:35-42 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
5:36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

1). Here is the proper response to the information they had collected concerning the promised land. The Lord had been speaking to Israel for over four hundred years beginning with Abraham that He was going to give them the land. About a year and a half earlier when they came out of Egypt and were backed up to the Red Sea, there seemed no way out, yet God in His power parted the Sea and enabled Israel to pass over and then destroyed Egypt’s army in what was one of the most awesome demonstrations of God’s power and faithfulness ever. Afterward the whole congregation sang the song recorded in Exodus 15. Some of the words relate to how their enemies would respond to God delivering Israel from Egypt ending in the parting of the Red Sea. Surely Caleb remembered those words.

15:15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.
15:16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O Lord, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.
15:17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O Lord, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, 15:18 O Lord, which thy hands have established.
The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.
2). Caleb fully followed God with his whole being, spirit, soul, and body.
a). Numbers 14:24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
b). Numbers 14:30 Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
3). Caleb was speaking in the spirit of faith. He believed what God had said and therefore he spoke it out. What ever God says is it. And Joshua was the same.
a). 2 Corinthians 4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore I have spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak.
b). Numbers 14:6-9 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
14:7 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
14:8 If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
14:9 Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.
