Proverbs 4:23
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the
issues of life.
a. NLT: Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of
your life.

1. “Keep thy heart with all diligence…”
a. keep [Strong: 5341 natsar
naw-tsar' a primitive root; to guard, in a good sense (to protect, maintain,
obey, etc.) or a bad one (to conceal, etc.):-- besieged, hidden thing,
keep(-er, -ing), monument, observe, preserve(-r), subtil, watcher(-man).] [Gesenius: to guard, watch, watch over, keep, to preserve, guard from dangers , observe,
guard with fidelity…]
1). The mind is the door to the
spirit.
a). 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 But if our
gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4:4 In whom the god of this world
hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the
glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
4:5 For we preach not ourselves,
but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.
4:6 For God, who commanded the
light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of
the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
2). We guard our hearts, our
spirits by controlling our thought life.
a). 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For
though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
10:4 (For the weapons of our
warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong
holds;)
10:5 Casting down imaginations,
and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and
bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

1). The Old Testament definition of
the makeup of man is not as defined as the New Testament, the New Testament is
given to us as spirit, soul and body.
a). 1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the
very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and
soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
c. with all [Strong: 3605 kol kole
or (Jer. 33:8) kowl {kole}; from 3634; properly, the whole; hence, all, any or

2. “…for out of it are the issues of life.”

1). Pulpit Commentary: The fact here stated is that the moral conduct of
life, its actions and proceedings, are determined by the condition of the
heart.
a). Matthew 15:18, 19 But those things which proceed out of the mouth
come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
2). Likewise it is out of the spirit of man that the power of the life of
God comes out of.
a). Galatians 5:22-24 But
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith,
5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the
affections and lusts.
