Psalm 33:12

Psalm 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

a. ASV: Blessed is the nation whose God is Jehovah, The people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.


b. YLT: O the happiness of the nation whose God is Jehovah, Of the people He did choose, For an inheritance to Him.

c. Amplified Bible Classic: Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His heritage.

d. Septuagint [Psalm 33:12 in our Bibles is Psalm 32:12 in the Septuagint]: Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance. 

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: Praiseworthy is the nation whose God is HASHEM, the people he chose for His own heritage.

1. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD…”

a. Blessed [Strong: 835 ʼesher, eh'-sher; from H833; happiness; only in masculine plural construction as interjection, how happy!:—blessed, happy.]

b. [is the] nation [Strong: 1471 gôwy, go'-ee; rarely (shortened) גֹּי gôy; apparently from the same root as H1465(in the sense of massing); a foreign nation; hence, a Gentile; also (figuratively) a troop of animals, or a flight of locusts:—Gentile, heathen, nation, people.]

1). The use of this Hebrew word means that this is not referring to Israel specifically, but rather to any nation that chooses the LORD as their God. In the majority of verses it is used it refers to the heathen, the Gentile nations, any nation that is not Israel.

c. whose [Strong: 834 'aher ash-er' a primitive relative pronoun (of every gender and number); who, which, what, that; also (as an adverb and a conjunction) when, where, how, because, in order that, etc.:--X after, X alike, as (soon as), because, X every, for, + forasmuch, + from whence, + how(-soever), X if, (so) that ((thing) which, wherein), X though, + until, + whatsoever, when, where (+ -as, -in, -of, -on, -soever, -with), which, whilst, + whither(- soever), who(-m, -soever, -se). As it is indeclinable, it is often accompanied by the personal pronoun expletively, used to show the connection.]

d. God [Strong: 430 ʼĕlôhîym, el-o-heem'; plural of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:—angels, × exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), × (very) great, judges, × mighty.]

e. [is the] LORD [Strong: 3068 Yᵉhôvâh, yeh-ho-vaw'; from H1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jeho-vah, Jewish national name of God:—Jehovah, the Lord.]

2. “…and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.”

a. [and the] people [Strong: 5971 ʻam, am; from H6004; a people (as a congregated unit); specifically, a tribe (as those of Israel); hence (collectively) troops or attendants; figuratively, a flock:—folk, men, nation, people.]

1). This Hebrew word does not mean Israel exclusively. Many times it is used to refer to any Gentile nation.

b. [whom he hath] chosen [Strong: 977 bâchar, baw-khar'; a primitive root; properly, to try, i.e. (by implication) select:—acceptable, appoint, choose (choice), excellent, join, be rather, require.]

c. [for his own] inheritance [Strong: 5159 nachălâh, nakh-al-aw'; from H5157 (in its usual sense); properly, something inherited, i.e. (abstractly) occupancy, or (concretely) an heirloom; generally an estate, patrimony or portion:—heritage, to inherit, inheritance, possession.]

1). In the second Psalm which is Messianic,  speaking prophetically of Christ we see a conversation between the First Person of the Triune Godhead (the Father), speaking to the Second Person of the Triune Godhead (the pre-incarnat Christ, the Word before he became flesh). The father instructs the pri-incarnate Christ to ask Him something.

a). Psalm 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

2). The inheritance is the world and every human born in it.

a). Philippians 2:6-11 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

b). Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
