2 Corinthians 3:17

2 Corinthians 3:17

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

a. NLT: For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

b. NIV: Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

c. YLT: And the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty;

d. Amplified Bible Classic: Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (emancipation from bondage, freedom).

e. Worrell Translation: Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

f. Wuest Translation: But the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty.

1. “Now the Lord is that Spirit…”

a. Now [Strong: 1161. de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. the [Strong: 3588. ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

c. Lord [Strong: 2962. kurios koo'-ree-os from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord, master, Sir.]

d. is [Strong: 2076. esti es-tee' third person singular present indicative of 1510; he (she or it) is; also (with neuter plural) they are:--are, be(-long), call, X can(-not), come, consisteth, X dure for a while, + follow, X have, (that) is (to say), make, meaneth, X must needs, + profit, + remaineth, + wrestle.]

e. the [Strong: 3588. ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

f. Spirit [Strong: 4151. pneuma pnyoo'-mah from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.]

1). There are different opinions as to which Person of the Godhead this refers to and the opinions are given by individuals far more educated than me. Personally I see in the context an inference to the Holy Spirit, who is the Person of the Godhead who is enforcing this Covenant in this dispensation.  

2. “…and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

a. and [Strong: 1161. de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. where [Strong: 3757. hou hoo genitive case of 3739 as adverb; at which place, i.e. where:--where(-in), whither(-soever).]

c. the [Strong: 3588. ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

d. 2 Corinthians 3:16

Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

a. NLT: But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

b. NIV: But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

c. YLT: And whenever they may turn unto the Lord, the vail is taken away.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: But whenever a person turns [in repentance] to the Lord, the veil is stripped off and taken away.

e. Worrell Translation: But whensoever it shall return to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

f. Wuest Translation: However, whenever it [Israel] shall turn to the Lord, the covering is being taken away [by the one who turns to the Lord].

1. “Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord…”

a. Nevertheless [Strong: 1161. de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. when [Strong: 2259. henika hay-nee'-kah of uncertain affinity; at which time:--when.]

c. it [Strong: 302. an an a primary particle, denoting a supposition, wish, possibility or uncertainty:--(what-, where-, wither-, who-)soever. Usually unexpressed except by the subjunctive or potential mood.]

1). Albert Barnes Commentary: When it shall turn to the Lord - When the Jewish people shall be converted. The word "it" here refers undoubtedly to "Israel" in 2 Corinthians 3:13.

2). Adam Clarke Commentary: When the Israelitish nation shall turn to the Lord Jesus, the veil shall be taken away; the true light shall shine; and they shall see all things clearly.

3). Dake: The heart.

4). Ellicott Commentary:  The veil shall be taken away when the heart of Israel shall turn, in the might of a real conversion, to the Lord of Israel.

5). Pulpit Commentary: The nominative of the verb is not expressed. Obviously the most natural word to supply is the one last alluded to, namely, "the heart of Israel."

d. shall turn [Strong: 1994. epistrepho ep-ee-stref'-o from 1909 and 4762; to revert (literally, figuratively or morally):--come (go) again, convert, (re-)turn (about, again).]

e. to [Strong: 4314. pros pros a strengthened form of 4253; a preposition of direction; forward to, i.e. toward (with the genitive case, the side of, i.e. pertaining to; with the dative case, by the side of, i.e. near to; usually with the accusative case, the place, time, occasion, or respect, which is the destination of the relation, i.e. whither or for which it is predicated):--about, according to , against, among, at, because of, before, between, (where-)by, for, X at thy house, in, for intent, nigh unto, of, which pertain to, that, to (the end that), X together, to (you) -ward, unto, with(-in). In the comparative case, it denotes essentially the same applications, namely, motion towards, accession to, or nearness at.]

2. “…the vail shall be taken away.”

b. vail [Strong: 2571. kaluma kal'-oo-mah from 2572; a cover, i.e. veil:--vail.]

c. [shall be] taken away [Strong: 4014. periaireo per-ee-ahee-reh'-o from 4012 and 138 (including its alternate); to remove all around, i.e. unveil, cast off (anchor); figuratively, to expiate:--take away (up).]

1). There is also a vail upon all nations, an unbelief that they choose to embrace. This vail of unbelief will also be taken away.

a). Isaiah 25:7  And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations.

But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

a. NLT: But the people’s minds were hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ.

b. NIV: But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.

c. YLT: But their minds were hardened, for unto this day the same vail at the reading of the Old Covenant doth remain unwithdrawn -- which in Christ is being made useless --

d. Amplified Bible Classic: In fact, their minds were grown hard and calloused [they had become dull and had lost the power of understanding]; for until this present day, when the Old Testament (the old covenant) is being read, that same veil still lies [on their hearts], not being lifted [to reveal] that in Christ it is made void and done away.

e. Worrell Translation: But their minds were impressible; for until this day upon the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains unlifted; which in Christ is done away.

f. Wuest Translation: But their minds were hardened, for to this very day the same covering remains at the reading of the testament whose usefulness is over, it not being revealed that it [the covering] is being done away in Christ

1. “But their minds were blinded…”

c. minds [Strong: 3540. noema no'-ay-mah from 3539; a perception, i.e. purpose, or (by implication) the intellect, disposition, itself:--device, mind, thought.]

d. were blinded [Strong: 4456. poroo po-ro'-o apparently from poros (a kind of stone); to petrify, i.e. (figuratively) to indurate (render stupid or callous):-- blind, harden.]

2. “…for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament…”

3. “…which vail is done away in Christ.”
