1 Corinthians 5:12

For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? Do not ye judge them that are within?

1. “For what have I to do to judge them also that are without…”

a. For [Strong: 1063. gar gar a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. what [Strong: 5101. tis tis probably emphatic of 5100; an interrogative pronoun, who, which or what (in direct or indirect questions):--every man, how (much), + no(-ne, thing), what (manner, thing), where (-by, -fore, -of, -unto, - with, -withal), whether, which, who(-m, -se), why.]

c. [have] I [Strong: 3427. moi moy the simpler form of 1698; to me:--I, me, mine, my.]

d. [to do] to judge [Strong: 2919. krino kree'-no properly, to distinguish, i.e. decide (mentally or judicially); by implication, to try, condemn, punish:--avenge, conclude, condemn, damn, decree, determine, esteem, judge, go to (sue at the) law, ordain, call in question, sentence to, think.]

e. [them] also [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

1). This was a formal authoritive spiritual exercise that was given to the Church by Christ for the health and purity of the church. It was not to be carried out on those outside the church. Just those in the church.

2. “…Do not ye judge them that are within?”

a. Do…judge [Strong: 2919. krino kree'-no properly, to distinguish, i.e. decide (mentally or judicially); by implication, to try, condemn, punish:--avenge, conclude, condemn, damn, decree, determine, esteem, judge, go to (sue at the) law, ordain, call in question, sentence to, think.]

e. [that are] within [Strong: 2080. eso es'-o from 1519; inside (as preposition or adjective):-- (with-)in(-ner, -to, -ward).]

1). It is within the church’s sphere of authority tojudge them that are within the local body. 1 Corinthians 6 lays that out very plainly. It is as if the Apostle Paul is saying this is a no brainer! Those outside of the church God Judges, those within the church, the church judges.

a). 1 Corinthians 6:2-5 Do ye not know that the Saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?

6:3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? How much more things that pertain to this life?

6:4 If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.

6:5 I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? No, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?
