1 Corinthians 5:2


And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

1. “And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned…” 


a. And [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]


b. you [Strong: 5210. humeis hoo-mice' irregular plural of 4771; you (as subjective of verb):--ye (yourselves), you.]


c. are [Strong: 2075. este es-teh' second person plural present indicative of 1510; ye are:--be, have been, belong.]


d. puffed up [Strong: 5448. phusioo foo-see-o'-o from 5449 in the primary sense of blowing; to inflate, i.e. (figuratively) make proud (haughty):--puff up.]

2. “…that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.”

b. he that [Strong: 3588. e. this [Strong: 5124. touto too'-to neuter singular nominative or accusative case of 3778; that thing:--here (-unto), it, partly, self(-same), so, that (intent), the same, there(-fore, -unto), this, thus, where(-fore).]


f. deed [Strong: 2041. ergon er'-gon from a primary (but obsolete) ergo (to work); toil (as an effort or occupation); by implication, an act:--deed, doing, labour, work.]


g. might be taken away [Strong: 1808. exairo ex-ah'-ee-ro from 1537 and 142; to remove:--put (take) away.] [Outline of Biblical Usage: to lift up or take away out of a place, to remove.]


1). Albert Barnes Commentary: Might be taken away - By excommunication. He should not, while he continues in this state, be allowed to remain in your communion.


2). Adam Clarke Commentary: This is supposed by some to refer to the punishment of death, by others to excommunication. The Christian Church was at this time too young to have those forms of excommunication which were practised in succeeding centuries. Probably no more is meant than a simple disowning of the person, accompanied with the refusal to admit him to the sacred ordinances, or to have any intercourse or connection with him.


3). The man did repent as is mentioned in Paul's second epistle.


a). 2 Corinthians 2:4-11 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.

2:5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.

2:6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.

2:7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

2:8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

2:9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.

2:10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;

2:11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

h. among [Strong: 3319. mesos mes'-os from 3326; middle (as an adjective or (neuter) noun):--among, X before them, between, + forth, mid(-day, -night), midst, way.]


i. you [Strong: 5216. humon hoo-mone' genitive case of 5210; of (from or concerning) you:--ye, you, your (own, -selves).]


1). There is no mention of putting to death in this part of the verse, the only thing Paul mentions that should be present in these circumstances is grief on the part of the congregation. In the next section of the verse he does give them instruction about what they should do. This is a monumental shift in dealing with sin in the community of believers. Under the Old Covenant this individual and the woman would have been put to death, but under the New Covenant a different path is taken.
